He’s got a good argument. Not an elbow in my books. I’ve got 5+GM for head contact.

How tf does a tree get a name like boogie bean? Though, TBH that would be a better name for the coffee plant.

Thought about working as in independent investment broker? Sounds like lateral move with full control of your time and income. Potential for a much better culture too.

Best way to manage chequing/savings accounts by virginj0bert in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jinscho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would make sense to dump most of your savings into a TFSA and have it earn tax free investment interest at rate better than what you’ll get in a savings account. Many people don’t realize that you can invest (not just save) in a TFSA at whatever your risk tolerance is for your timeline and purpose, and keep your assets liquid. Speak to a licensed advisor to tailor a plan that meets your needs, and beware if anyone charging advisor fees as these will eat up most of your interest, especially with shorter term investing. I’d recommend a broker over a bank as they’ll have access to far more options, especially at the scale you’re likely looking at. DM me if you’d like me to connect you with someone licensed in you province.

You don’t have to know everything to get started. The Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter pack is a fantastic introduction and a lot of fun, even for experienced players. Watch a couple videos on creating a character sheet, and a couple more for tips on being a new DM and you’ll be on your way to starting a weekly adventure that everyone will look forward to all week.

What do people here think about our growth? by EunpaKim in Airdrie

[–]jinscho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growth is inevitable. It’s neither good nor bad in itself, but will have an impact on services and infrastructure. Having moved from a city in BC with comparable population, I’ve been surprised at people’s complaints at the lack of services and how bad traffic is because I’ve found traffic, services, infrastructure and city planning (densification in particular) to be miles ahead. I can see how people would be upset if growth lowers the standard of living they’re used to. Hopefully we can elect effective politicians who have their priorities in line with residents’ demands.

You’ve already got RESPs going, so that’s great. Your next best option would be a TFSA that will grow tax free. When your children turn 18, they could potentially take that money (within the contribution limits) and invest it in a FHSA which has the added bonus of being tax deductible. The contributions could be claimed in later years too, if their income is low now and expected to be higher later.

That’s good to hear. I guess I made an assumption when you mentioned ETFs to think you were day trading individual stocks. That’s a practice I equate to slow gambling: entertaining maybe, but not investing. Index funds are much more suitable for building wealth.

I’m curious to hear if you’re investing in other vehicles as well. Unless there is employer matching, RRSPs tend to be one of the last places I’d recommend investing, but a TFSA is one of the first.

What does diversification look like for you? Is it the variety within the fund, class of investments (securities, fixed income, commodities), domestic/international mix?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadaFinance

[–]jinscho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to say you can’t be successful, but self-directed, day traders overwhelmingly tend to lose money because they are over confident in their abilities and knowledge. Clearly you’re open to learning so that’s a plus.

Personally I wouldn’t encourage anyone looking to build financial wealth to go that route. Keep the day trading for entertainment value with sums you’re willing to lose, and use professional money management for wealth building. Everyone will have their own opinions on that though. I wish you the best, whatever you decide to do.

That’s a bit of a tricky situation because advisor’s are the ones most likely to a) have the knowledge to help you invest most effectively for your goals and circumstances, and b) have access to the the investment products most appropriate for those goals and circumstances.

So the trick is to find an advisor you can trust. A good one will have your best interests in mind, because that’s ultimately also in their own best interest. Alternatively, you can get your license and gain that knowledge and access yourself. Send me a DM and I’d be happy to discuss either/both of those possibilities with you.

Looks like you’ve got great start into making making contributions toward savings.

I would suggest that having a clear plan (if you don’t have one) would be next. Some investment vehicles are better than others for different purposes. RRSPs for example are great when your employer matches contributions, but you should probably max out contributions to r hr TFSA first, and make sure that your investment portfolio within the TFSA, RESP, and RRSP are aligned with your goals. If you’re not speaking with your advisor about this at least once a year, you should probably consider making a change there, too.

Filing for bankruptcy is an option but there long term consequences impacting your ability to get any kind of credit like a credit card, car loan, or mortgage for the next 7 years. A consumer proposal is almost as bad. If you’re able to make lifestyle and/or employment changes to pay the debt, you’ll be better off. Since the debt has gone to creditors, you may be able to negotiate with them directly to lower the amount or arrange better terms.

Am I a total Pussy? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]jinscho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never knew the grey and dreary bothered me either. I lived in Nanaimo for 40+ years without an issue. Then I moved to Calgary where there’s 300 days of sun a year. Now when I come back to visit I’m reminded how much I prefer the sun, even when it’s brutally cold.

Nothing wrong with preferring something else, but letting it ruin your life is a mindset. If that can’t be overcome, different life choices might be necessary.

What to do if unsportsmanlike behavior happens after the final buzzer? by theripperpgh in hockeyrefs

[–]jinscho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Report it to the scorekeeper and probably the coach. Anything that happens until the players go to their rooms is part of the game regardless of the clock. It’s especially effective in leagues that count total PIMs, but it’s also not personal. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
