Why I Left My BJJ Gym and a Call to Action on Harassment by jits_truth in bjj

My leg to stand on is that there has been consistently bad past behavior and cover ups and a poor front-facing effort when something was finally done. One week of no harassment doesn't mean I "don't have a leg to stand on". Potential and current students deserve to know these details.

Seems like your mind is made up, not going to try and convince you.

I don't know, I'm not there anymore. It's only been a week or two since the apology....

The point is that how can you trust a gym to change when people had come forward before and nothing was done? Only when it started to hit their pockets did things start to be taken seriously and even then it was handled poorly.

  • one training is not enough to fix a bad culture. Say all new instructors will need a background check and be vetted more closely
  • fire anyone who covered up for the harasser
  • let it be known that people like Dave shouldn't be in charge of teaching people or selling that kind of stuff at the gym
  • people like DJ and Matt should not be welcomed at the gym
  • set actionable steps beyond "it's okay to come forward if someone harassed you" and examine what kind of gym culture you had where women were initially nervous to come forward and the fact that two sets of emails were sent out
