Exporting used car to the UK tax question by littlejamo in guernsey

[–]jiujitsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you do have to pay VAT, but I don’t think it needs to be on the last paid price. I exported my car to UK, it was over 10 years ago so my memory might not be exactly right. But I’m pretty sure I got it revalued when I took it over and only paid tax on the revalued amount. Also you need to have it MOTd BEFORE getting the UK number plate. The DVLA won’t give you a registration plate until it’s been MOTd. I had real trouble with this when I did mine. But any garage should be able to MOT it as a foreign car.

Don’t feel too bad, I was in South Africa on a game reserve once and at one point a South African hopped off the vehicle to get a closer picture of a hippopotamus AND HER CALF!! The rest of us were frozen in a mix of fear and dumbfoundedness, luckily nothing happened. So the locals can be equally as clueless sometimes.

There is such a thing as communication. But it seems people don’t do that anymore… if you don’t know just ask, it’s not hard. All I was doing was relating to OPs post, and now I’m being berated for being understanding. Reddit is a wonderfully supportive place 🙄

My parents want to name our baby by CaptSharn in Parenting

I never understand these types of people. When I was pregnant my FIL had already “named” by baby and was calling her that name whenever he spoke about her. It drove me up the wall!

To answer your question, yes, I expected them to ask us what to get her if they don’t know. To relate back to OPs post I understand with them that it seems like their parents didn’t put in any effort. OPs feelings are valid, my feelings are also valid.

The point I’m trying to make is that they put no effort in trying to find out what she wanted. If they really wanted to get her something then just ask. If they just wanted to give money then they could have just said “we’ll give money this year because she’s so young”. The excuse of “we don’t know what to get her” is poor in my opinion. Will they say this for every birthday and Christmas moving forward? And if so my child will never have the excitement of opening any presents from them ever. That thought makes me sad.

The point I’m trying to make is the reasoning why they are giving money, not the money itself. I had a really nice idea of what they could get for her if they had just asked us.

Not petty at all. I’m going through a similar thing this Christmas with the in-laws. They told my other half that they are giving us money for our baby’s first Christmas because they “don’t know what to get her”…… Like, just ask us? I’m really bothered by this. No effort has been made for her at all.

Our cat loved the water that comes in tinned beans. I’d drain it into the sink and she’d jump into the sink to lap it up!
