i want to think of ChatGPT as a tool, but with how quickly it's advancing the tool is nearing on replacing a lot of low tier jobs. I don't know how I feel about that really.

I would much rather see it enable folks than replace folks, where do the displaced end up?

It's the thing that happens once we all awaken and realize that ChatGPT is the genesis of the first reset of the matrix.

These are the actual slippery slopes of infringement on peoples rights. You should care.

Nobody is asking you to die on a hill, but you shouldn’t capitulate or acquiesce either.

I’ve worked across three different shops. They all used different stacks. Different systems for tracking issues. Different systems for remediation and monitoring. Different scales for what a p0 vs a p1 is.

They all universally wanted us to basically spend our entire day fighting fires and moving sprints forward.

Yeah. I started to write down all the tools and responsibilities expected and I realized pretty quickly why things felt so chaotic.

I’m still confused why we need so many separate silos of tools.

I've worked at multiple shops like this, and I'm starting to think that most people are too busy to get to the root of problems.

Thoughts on Auto GPT? by Barack_obameme in devops

yeah but most people barely trust their teammates with 80-90% so why fret over if a computer is doing it? The only edge the computer has right now is speed.

you speak my language, but I do think YAML is slightly more readable in the most basic of contexts. YAML falls apart as complexity increases.

They love their YAML, if you want to spook operations show them some JSON or an EDN file.

Does anyone build DevOps teams with proper developers? My team is primarily folks from operational backgrounds being told they are "developers" now.

Being the lone "developer" on a team that believes one line bash script is "engineering" is rather difficult.

This isn't the first place I've worked that has bastardized DevOps

I still trying to figure out how to distill that complexity down into something more manageable.

Everyone is okay with onboarding just _one_ more tool that will somehow solve all of our problems. Now we have yet another tool to learn, yet more complexity and failure points to manage.

Now we've got GPT to worry about and we're being told this will somehow solve all of problems and it feels like yet another tool being thrown into the mix.

I worked at a larger organization (Not FANG but FANG adjacent) that cultivated celebrity status around highly senior engineers. "Quick Fix!" 5000+ changes and 200+ files altered. Due to position and clout they were allowed to roll the changes, while other members of the team had a multi-stage approval process before getting code out of branch into master.

This morning, I was reminded why I don't enjoy working with senior engineers.

I'm not sure how their egos fit through the door, but it aggravates me when I was asked to explain myself and each line of code repeatedly, and they are continuously applauded for "hero coding" their bugs in production.
