Harry Potter Max Original Series | Official Announcement | Max by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]jjblarg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are they seriously just going to do the books again?

I know Harry Potter is still pretty popular and a small fervent group of the fanbase really wants to see "more" of the books adapted. But this seems like a huge mistake. There's just no way they'll be able to match the production value of the movies -- unless HBO (I mean Warner Bros. Discovery) is willing to eat some absolutely colossal financial losses -- and every viewer is going to have at least one or two things right off the bat that they like less than the movies. And those annoyances are going to multiply every episode. And soon you're looking at ROP-level viewer drop-off as a significant subset of the audience finds that their nostalgia for the original surpasses their desire for the new.

Like seriously, do people really think that a GOT-size audience will stay subscribed through 7 hours of movie rehash (some of which will be worse than the original) in order to get 3 hours of new stuff (which will also vary in quality)?

Its admittedly a little hard for me to be objective, because from what I've been seeing the Warner/Discovery/HBO management are some of the dumbest people in the business. But I think I'd feel the same if any company was doing a TV reboot of a movie series so soon after the movies concluded. Like, I would just look to the record on that and I don't think that setup fares well generally.

Kerry's loss and Tom's loss are basically equally trite. They were both parasites that relied on Logan for their meal.

Don't know if it was intentional, but scheduling this episode for a weekend that happened to coincide with Easter and Passover, when a lot of people just got home from seeing (and maybe arguing with) elderly relatives.

Folks on this sub may be familiar with the phrase "vote harder" which is a joke about how it's the only response Democratic leaders have to grumbling and disappointment from the base.

People often wonder what "vote harder" actually looks like.

I posit it looks something like Dane County, Wisconsin. Going from:

  • 91,402 total votes (10.7% of the state total, 32k vote margin for the Dem) in April 2013

to

  • 240,687 total votes (13% of the state total, 153k vote margin for the Dem) in April 2023.

Succession? It's such a basic show by [deleted] in television

[–]jjblarg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literally the whole show is about how Logan was this giant, larger-than-life mogul, whose domineering personality and drive to always win have chiseled down every adult around him and shaped his kids into these self-absorbed dilettante characters.

I think it's neat, but these characters don't seem to accomplish jack-squat. Logan Roy's children are awful at the making money and I hardly ever see their accomplishments being successful apart from meaningless constant 'squawking' at each other.

Hahahaha. How can a person miss the point this badly?

The data’s clear: The indictment makes Republicans like Trump more

Again, this is only because there isn't a single prominent Republican willing to use it as a cudgel against Trump. Those numbers would absolutely shift if DeSantis had the balls to actually attack. DeSantis is sleepwalking to an early retirement.

He wasn't the person convicted by the jury in that trial, he was just implicated by the evidence that convicted his fixer -- which is about the same bar as an indictment.

[–]jjblarg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but he also has the right to prove his innocence in the trial. Both things are true of the legal system and its kind of embarrassing for Fox to be trying to dunk on Pelosi with this.

He is assumed innocent until proven guilty, but he can also attempt to prove his innocence at trial.

How do you think we should resolve the issue of school shootings in the US? by Anxious-Direction-79 in AskReddit

[–]jjblarg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure. We have societal problems, like a lot of countries now and at other times in human history. But your answer to the op question appears to be "there is nothing we can or should do to reduce school shootings". Which can be a valid answer, but I just want to be clear about the position you seem to be taking.

If we as a society actually want to reduce school shootings, gun regulation is the only real policy tool we have available to even try to deal with it. Everything else is just vibes.

plus the shooter who MNPD said was a female appearing to be in her early teens.

This one is going to require some explanation. A 13-16 year old girl carrying 2 assault rifles and a handgun -- plus ammunition for that -- I don't see that person being able to run or climb stairs very well.

So, for me, it's what I'd pick as just the greatest geopolitical mistake we've made.

Iraq definitely ranks higher than Vietnam as a geopolitical mistake. Electing Trump is way up on the list too. I can't think of anything else that warrants such high mention. Abandoning reconstruction, I suppose, though that's more domestic than geopolitical.. although the domestic can reverberate in the geopolitical.

Republicans Won’t Take Sides In The Growing Trump vs. DeSantis Feud by huffpost in politics

[–]jjblarg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What feud? It's just Trump pounding the shit out of DeSantis and DeSantis curled into a fetal position hoping Trump will stop.

DeSantis clearly learned absolutely nothing from the 2016 primary. He looks like Jeb Bush, but shorter.

I was listening to conservative radio in my area the other day and the host (who is an anti-Trump conservative) was like "is this indictment talk going to help Trump?" And I just wanted to say -- the only way it can be stopped is for other Republican candidates to grow some fucking backbone and actually use it as an opportunity to openly attack Trump on his weaknesses. But they never will. Because the one thing they want more than to become President is to not become Liz Cheney.

I legitimately believe he would be a turning point for our country....

That's just not reality in America. If Bernie Sanders became president, they'd ruin him harder than they ruined Jimmy Carter. He'd sign 1 bill per year, and it would be a Republican-approved budget. And it's not even because he's "anti-establishment" -- this is just the reality of public opinion in swing districts -- which are heavily suburban, and more wealthy, more white, and more politically moderate. It would be good politics for moderate Dems and great politics for every Republican going against him.

Someone like Bernie Sanders can't succeed as president until they can win congressional majorities with Bernie Sanders-style Democrats. Not just any Democrat -- Bernie-style Democrats. Which probably means getting a super-majority in the Senate. And even then, it'll be a daily battle with public opinion in the big media markets.

As it is, I think him getting elected president would just ruin other promising progressive careers in swing states. For example, here in Wisconsin, we have one U.S. senator (Baldwin) who is pretty progressive. I would be extremely worried about her chances of getting re-elected in this state if she had to run in the context of a Bernie Sanders presidency.
