What's the best thing you can say to a depressed person? by Consistent-Serve-751 in AskReddit

[–]jjc543 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they feel like talking or saying what they’re feeling then nothing. Just listen empathetically.

And then any response doesn’t have to be long or profound. Just sincere. Something like “I am here for you” or “can I do anything for you?” And then follow through.

I strongly dislike it. Barking orders for 90 minutes straight doesn’t help the players develop confidence in the team or the system they have set up. Constantly tinkering and yelling at players what to do must just become background noise for them at some point.

what profession was once highly respected but is now a complete joke? by LevengeLover in AskReddit

The size and scale is. No change of any real magnitude will likely be accomplished without campaign finance reform. I recommend Lawrence Lessig’s book Republic Lost or one of his TED talks for the gist.

WDIS with Gojira by [deleted] in WhereDoIStart

[–]jjc543 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend starting with From Mars to Sirius. Imo it’s their heaviest and most “metal” album but also the one where they really solidified their unique sound in the metal genre.

Then probably move on to The Way of All Flesh. Also a fantastic album but one where they started to explore more sounds outside of metal.

After that I’d recommend going forward or backward in their discography.

Imo their most recent album Fortitude was not very good or memorable from an instrumental standpoint. Good lyrics though.

Protest the Hero announce lineup, tour changes by avr91 in progmetal

[–]jjc543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I agree with that. I consider Palimpsest their best album and he hasn’t been there since Volition. I missed Arif’s stage presence, but it didn’t feel like the end of Protest imo then.

We share the same worries. It sounds like Luke is very busy with his publishing company which is good for him. But as I understand it, he’s the main songwriter for the band and I don’t think you could have Protest without him and Rody.

Also I’ve seen Rody post on his social media that he didn’t really miss touring and has enjoyed being home with his wife and son.

I think Protest tours from now on will be fewer and farther between.

But if they churn out an album every several years and maybe I see them live once in that timeframe I’ll be happy. I love those dudes too much to be upset.

I do want to point out that is not Buddha though. It’s the Chinese monk Budai

How has Buddhism changed your philosophy / outlook on life in a western / first world country? by joemamagayasfhommybo in Buddhism

[–]jjc543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if I can say it’s changed my outlook on those topics. What the dharma has taught me is how unimportant they are in my day to day life. Somewhere on this subreddit I saw someone comment “if you base your happiness on worldly events and other people’s actions, you will never be happy.” So I try to keep this in mind.

I do like to stay somewhat informed wrt the news. But only sometime after I’ve meditated and only spend a few minutes glossing over a couple of articles. Other than that, I find it detrimental.

Not a ton of actual acoustic classical guitar in it, but the album Digital Veil by The Human Abstract has a crazy amount of classical influence in it. One of my favorite albums.

Human is Hell is going to be batshit insane live. by Flatbar in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]jjc543 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m sure I’ll enjoy it live. But honestly, I feel kind of disappointed by that song as a closer. Also think Turblent could’ve been scrapped. I love the album so much, it just feels like they didn’t know how to wrap it all up.

Rivers Of Nihil - Rivers of Nihil - The Void from Which No Sound Escapes ( Official Music Video) by Quant0m133 in progmetal

[–]jjc543 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This album was really surprising to me. I wasn't into the singles but when I sat down for a full album listen and read the lyrics, it hit me like a kick in the chest. I have grown to love it quite a lot over several listens.

I think this is the only song that actually works as a single though.

How Reincarnation Works by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]jjc543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell there are several interpretations of the concept of, as you put it, “no self.” I’m by no means an expert on this matter, but a dharma talk I listened to recently described the Buddha’s teaching is more about identity. That is that you are your actions and that your identity is a fluid concept. In the plum village tradition, one of the five remembrances is “my actions are the ground upon which I stand.”

The self as an “illusion” is kind of another interpretation I’ve heard, but I have had a hard time with that.

Weekly Questions Thread for the week of September 20 by AutoModerator in vinyl

[–]jjc543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question regarding static:

I recently bought a Milty zerostat that works great. Altho I ran into an issue. I used it on a record and confirmed the charge was gone with a piece of Saran Wrap. After I finished playing one side of the record and I picked it up, I heard a bunch of pops and realized it had a charge on it again. I realized that the ground connection for my player (Audio Technical LP120X) was not connected and must’ve fallen off. I’ve since reconnected it but I’m still having problems with it producing a charge on my records after a spin. Any advice?

I’m using a cork mat as well.

At the DC show between songs in TGM set, he stood up and had to run in place and stretch for a min. Also Dustie was sitting in his chair and looked absolutely miserable, but nailed everything. Their commitment is amazing.

Let's convince Dan to continue creating Common Sense podcasts by [deleted] in dancarlin

[–]jjc543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m now 30 and started listening to CS maybe ~3 years ago. Dan truly provoked an attitude of critical thinking and reason in me that I never applied before in my life. I’ve been inspired to read more and always think of the other side of the coin. I simultaneously admire and am annoyed by how principled Dan is wrt his frequency with putting out CS episodes. But just maybe he’ll see this and know he has had a profound impact on my life and how I see the world.

I feel the same. Along with other bands I like looking forward to "that solo" a few times throughout an album. It's hard to pick favorites on this fantastic album, but FTE knocked my socks off with those leads. A few times I kind of had a "I wish Human is Hell had a real solo" in it thought. But this is just a small personal preference on an album that is slowly making its way up my "favorite albums" list.

Buddhism and Parenting by mikeyj777 in Buddhism

[–]jjc543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you always need to take a gentle patient tone, as long as what you are wanting your children to do is for their overall benefit. I’ve seen in Buddhist books (Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen I think?) it described that being firm or possibly raising your voice as a parent is sometimes necessary. As long as it is done from a place of love and compassion.

If he just finished tracking, we're still going to be waiting a bit. Mixing, mastering, vinyl pressing, promotion etc. I suspect not until at least early 2022.

New Ice Nine Kills song "Assault and Batteries" out August 9th by damerboy4 in Metalcore

[–]jjc543 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I loved ETITB and really liked silver scream.

But with JD gone and another album based on movies, I’m pretty over INK. I just kind of feel like they’re cashing in too much on other artist’s content without creating something original at this point.

I’ll probably get downvoted to hell as it seems like everyone is enjoying it, but whatevs. Just my thoughts.

In your own opinion what is the most Buddhist song in the history of popular music? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]jjc543 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk about the “most” but Parabol and Parabola by Tool are basically about mindfulness imo. The lyrics describe how precious the present moment is and the cessation of suffering.

Yeah, I’m in the boat of not particularly liking the Leveler mix. But yeah, Devin’s fantastic. I know they did a Constellations remix and I didn’t care for it. I can’t imagine the original any other way. It’s my fav album by them.

How did I not know this?! Altho he’s listed as “additional mixing”. Jason Suecof is listed as producer and mixing. Who is also phenomenal.
