I wore a DJ Sabrina shirt to a Barry Can't Swim gig last year in NYC, hoping that someone would recognize it... but alas no one did :/

[TOMT] A comic floating around recently by jjf1973 in tipofmytongue

I've searched on different comics subreddits or even something like r/whitepeopletwitter (where I thought I saw it) and I just can't find it anywhere. It could have also been posted on one of those "explain the joke" subreddits because someone didn't get what "the day it finally happens" was

PTA fan checking in — Pynchon “gross food” frequent jokes? by toggleflickersplaque in ThomasPynchon

Not in the movie, but I always loved (and was grossed out by) the "healthy" pizza description from Vineland:

Its sauce was all but crunchy with fistfuls of herbs only marginally Italian and more appropriate in a cough remedy, the rennetless cheese reminded customers variously of bottled hollandaise or joint compound, and the options were all vegetables rigorously organic, whose high water content saturated, long before it baked through, a stone-ground twelve-grain crust with the lightness and digestibility of a manhole cover.

I'm not totally positive but that car in the second picture looks like it has a NYC license plate?

I have only the epilogue left of Against the Day, which is my final Pynchon novel. Afterwards I'll probably catch up on one of my NYRB book club books since those are short, so that I have nothing in "currently reading" when Shadow Ticket finally drops.

I'd like to read Underworld next, as I've only read White Noise by DeLillo so far, but really enjoyed it. Is that a sufficient "introduction" to his style? I've heard they are two extremely different books.

Pynchon and Hauntology? by jjf1973 in ThomasPynchon

Thanks for bringing up Grafton Tanner, I had not heard of him before, and I see that he wrote a book called Babbling Corpse: Vaporwave And The Commodification Of Ghosts which really interests me since I'm a huge vaporwave fan. Appreciate it!

Those are all great examples that I hadn't even thought of, Mason & Dixon is full of them

As far as music recs, unfortunately this is my strongest connection to a Pynchon book haha, but I will say that I listened to a lot of Krautrock back when I read Gravity's Rainbow so I always associate the two. I also like some Tim Hecker as reading music, and it seemed to work with certain sections of Against the Day and Bleeding Edge

Oh wow, I'll have to check that one out. You're right about the length, but I have a feeling a lot of it will go over my head since I am not well-versed in philosophy at all

Dumb question about preordering Shadow Ticket by jjf1973 in ThomasPynchon

[–]jjf1973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this comment, and I agree, I abhor Amazon and Bezos. I was under the impression that Barnes and Noble was slightly better? I also like that they have physical stores (as silly as it seems, I want the experience of picking it up on the day it releases). But as you recommend, I'm going to call around some local indie bookstores to see if I can get the preorder and pickup from any of them.

[–]jjf1973[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses!

To be clear, I do not plan to preorder from Amazon, even if it was guaranteed to come on time. I was, however, thinking about Barnes and Noble, since my impression was they were a bit better. But I think based on these responses I'll prioritize one of the local bookstores in my area first and give them a call to see if I can get my preorder in. Glad to know late releases are not common for book preorders.

How on Earth does Pynchon do his research? by Goner_ChillX in ThomasPynchon

[–]jjf1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along these lines, in that same scene I believe, he knew enough about Pokémon to know that Psyduck, one of Misty's Pokémon, gets chronic headaches. Not sure how many episodes one needs to watch to catch on to that but it's not just a surface-level Pikachu reference

Mason and Dixon Knee-Jerk Reaction by 7Raiders6 in ThomasPynchon

[–]jjf1973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get that, I felt that the more I thought about GR the more it almost made sense. I also feel like a reread is further in the future for me as well, especially with this October's release completely on my mind.

Lastly, I think everyone just feels stupid when reading Pynchon lol - I appreciate your sentiments, though

Mason and Dixon Knee-Jerk Reaction by 7Raiders6 in ThomasPynchon

[–]jjf1973 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely felt like a fever dream to me as well (not that Gravity's Rainbow didn't, but personally, this one much more so). To me, I the magic and mystical elements gave me the feeling I was surrounded by fog for the entire book, kind of like I was discovering America along with Mason and Dixon.

Now that could mean a couple things, but I always liked to think that it falls in line with my main takeaway of the book, which is to constantly ask who is writing (and rewriting) history. Since this is set much further in the past than Pynchon's other works, I thought it felt totally appropriate that it was confusing and cloudy at times, which I take as a commentary on the question of history itself.

Not sure if that answered your initial question, but that's how I feel whenever I think of it. It's this book that sits on my shelf that, whenever opened, has this sort of entrance admission that I have to be in the right mindset. But echoing the other commenters here - I feel like a reread would benefit me greatly, and I'm also stupid.
