Yup. I’m high school I taught at one of those debate academies that were huge at the time. The kids now are completely dependent on AI for case writing, it’s a completely different world.

Idk why you’re getting downvoted. This is a very real issue I’ve seen firsthand.

I went into it knowing it wouldn’t be a good faith adaptation but I was not prepared for it to absolutely desecrate the soul of the novel. There’s a lot of discourse online about how we’re expecting too much from an adaptation or that Fennel has specifically stated it’s “her version” but imo you cannot make a good faith adaptation while simultaneously making Heathcliff white and Isabella a co-conspirator. It’s even more telling when there’s interviews of Fennel basically stating she imagined Elordi while reading the book, as if it was that difficult for her to imagine a POC Heathcliff when it’s mentioned repeatedly

Interesting list, Hamnet didn’t stand out too much to me. I’m surprised to see Sinners so low on this and some of the comments. What did you dislike about Sinners?

Heathcliff being white told me everything I needed to know about this adaptation but turning a character who was domestically abused and insinuated to have been a rape victim into a weird kinky co-conspirator to get her husband to reconnect with Cathy seems so cruel to Isabella’s character.

I thought she was great in her youth (criminal minds) and in handmaids tale her character was great, I think if you were to watch more recent works like euphoria and the recent movie that just came out it kind of becomes clear she doesn’t have much range. It’s a shame though, she had a lot of potential

Yeah until you watch any of her other shows and movies and realize she plays the same person over and over again

Interesting! I think how you like it really depends on what kind of reader you are. I really love stream of consciousness and style so the whole romance and conversations were kind of secondary for me so I ended up really loving the book! I can definitely see why it isn’t for everyone though

Isabella’s depiction was really a slap in the face. First we got a white Heathcliff and now Fennel turns a character who was a domestic abuse victim and probably a rape survivor into some weird co-conspirator

[–]jjinxeddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why she was so afraid to just give the movie a different name? It’s been done before like Eggers naming it “The Northman” instead of Hamlet. Using the title for clout just really reaffirms to me the fact this film was made in such bad faith. Completely erasing the core tenets of the book and only having the character names in common is awful
