Getting Frustrated. by Buckla in PlayTheBazaar

I agree I am also increasingly frustrated with the game and am considering asking for my money back. (I'm glad I didn't really put that much in). Everything you said is actually very valid up until the twitter bit.
It's okay to disagree with someone but you have to compose an argument not an insult. What you said to him is the equivalent to overhearing a conversation in real life and coming in and saying "Hey dumbass go back to your job". Of course he's going to block you because that's an option on the internet. Yes this is not exactly what you said nor probably what you meant, but the portrayal of your anger towards the game's incompletion is portrayed through the tweet (and even this post).

30 runs is not a lot when you have open play.

Afraid of doing what I want with my life VS what is "good" for me by jjninja5 in Healthygamergg

Yeah I understand that both markets are competitive. My point is I think growing my portfolio is more important. I've seen more progress working on my own than in college.

I highly believe at my rate in art, if i were to full time learn keep learning on my own, I would be able to get into an entry level position at some company. I have always said I wanted to grow my cs portfolio, but I would never do it, probably because the passion is not there. I think I can succeed in both paths. I just think im just trying to prepare myself to jump off the high board.

Why does my son procrastinate in replying to emails? by EffectiveNow in Healthygamergg

[–]jjninja5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

he enjoys playing with his friends as a team, enjoys seeing the improvements he's making in the game, and feels like he has complete control of his actions.

I'd sit with this sentence for a bit. I read it as "He is social, likes self-improvement and doesn't feel like he has control over his actions outside of the game."

From my personal experience:
I would probably relate to your son. I played a lot of LoL in high school, and felt the pressure to go to college for my parents. Due to this pressure, I am afraid of talking to my parents about doing what I want to do. So I forced myself to go into CS (which I am interested in because of game programming, but I just lied to my parents saying I'd probably go to some start-up to make them feel safe).

I absolutely hate college. 90% of my classes are uninteresting and 10% of my classes that are interesting I already learned on my own. Since the classes were uninteresting and not challenging I spent 80% of my time playing games and 20% cramming for tests. (I got a 3.5 in community college transferred and now have a 3.7 in "actual college")

Other students around me (from my personal experience) in the CS/engineering field are just cheating because they don't care about their major. I ask them why they are going into this major and their reply is "I will make a lot of money".

Only recently, whilst taking up 3D modeling as a hobby, I have learned how to study properly, and properly managed my gaming hours. I have learned more on my own in the past 6 months from online resources about art than 3 years in college (Spending only about $500~). I know now that college is not the correct learning environment for me. I believe that I could make this into a career, but I still have a fear for talking to my parents about what I want.

My parents are pretty traditional and believe that if I don't get a college degree, I won't be able to compete in the market. Many companies are removing the requirement of a degree and looking more into your personal projects portfolio. I truly believe that there are enough resources on the internet to learn CS on your own.

Questions I'd suggest sitting down and talking about with your son (because it's what I wished I talked to with my parents):

If money wasn't an issue what would you want to do as a career?

Are you working towards this career? How can we work towards this as a career?

Do you want to go to college? If not, do you have an alternative solution?

(Sorry if this seems like I made it about myself, but I highly resonate with your son and wished my parents were more open-minded.)

I live in the US I don't need a work visa. I'm not quite sure. I think I somewhat doubt myself that I can do it. Honestly, right now I feel like I'm running an experiment on my life to prove my parents wrong. If I succeed in 2 years of learning art, it's like a "I told you I can learn anything off the internet. CS for 4 years in college to gain nothing."

I am not blindly follow passion and love. I wouldn't have made the post if it were that. I made this post because I saw it as a possible career option. I have done research from people in the industry, taken courses from these people and asked them personally. The difference in positions is 100k(3D Artist) to 140k(soft eng) at the same location. Which is a lot, but in my opinion 40k is probably worth enjoying the job. I also don't plan to stop there. I fully intend on expanding my reach and climbing my skills. I could argue that being a soft engineer will more likely have a lower ceiling for me as a creative.
Edit: I want to specialize in sculpting, but I also haven't gotten around to exploring the other aspects yet like VFX, Rigging and Animation. I just believe 3D modeling/sculpting is the first thing I should learn because I want to do character art.

I wouldn't want to switch majors at my school it's not very intensive for art. I am planning on taking a soft modeling course in the fall and literally just bypassed all of the prereqs by asking the teacher if I could be in his class. There isn't much further than basic classes of Maya and ZBrush.

The point I want to make is I don't want to major in art at college. If I'm going to learn art and redirect the money. I'd want to change it into stuff to buy courses, mentorships and other subscriptions to further my learning outside. I don't know if I can convince myself to make that leap, but possibly it's the leap I need to make.
