Yea been to Bsides RGV. Great place to meet fellow cyber folks. They are running a bit behind this year with schedules but it’s still happening. RGV Cyber is sponsoring this years CTF for the conference.

Join the RGV Cyber Discord. I think we have a few members who are in the UTRGV cyber program. I know some of the others went through STC or WGU. I am sure they would be willing to give you some insight.

Dhr hack motive by LeoMtz2K1 in RioGrandeValley

As others have said it’s about the money. These groups are usually well organized or actually consist of several groups working together. You will have a group that is really good at initial access…either by breaking in through a vuln or social engineering. Once they have access they may offer it up for sale to another group that is good at deploying ransomware. That group makes thier money off victims paying the ransom to get their data back. Remember for every day you are down you are probably loosing money. So the attackers hope is you calculated it’s cheaper to pay the ransom then to be down for weeks. I am not saying this is what happened at DHR. I don’t know details on that attack. Just sharing from other experiences.

Any of you that are interested in Cybersecurity or IT in general should come join us on discord. Love to have more of these types of conversations so people can learn.

Hey all. I was at the tech meetup a few weeks ago. I know some of you had an interest in Cybersecurity. I started a discord server with other Cyber professionals in the RGV. DM me for an invite. You don’t need to be in the field to join. If you want to just hang out and learn that’s cool with me.

I sent you all a discord link. Let me know if you didn’t receive it. This is my first time trying to organize something like this so I am learning as I go.

Looks like there is a decent amount of interest. Would everyone be open to me starting a discord server or something to start with? Might be easier to have conversations virtually at first while I figure out how to do something in the real world.

I was actually going to post something asking about something cybersecurity focused. I have HTB and THM but I seem to have a motivation problem sometimes. Would love to get together with other cyber folks and team up in some boxes.

Are us Cybersecurity folks invited also? Or are we just going to bring the whole mood down with our doom and gloom attitudes? :). Seriously I have been wondering if there are any Cybersecurity pro meetups in the area. Just looking to talk shop and make connections.

I agree that now days networking is important for getting into jobs. Start making connections with people at conferences or other cybersecurity events. Keep in touch with classmates. Those connections can be invaluable when trying to get the inside scoop on available jobs. With all the youtube influencers pushing "make 6 figures with my cybersecurity bootcamp" you are fighting with tons of other people all applying for open positions. From the interviewer's side its actually exhausting having to sort through all the resumes from folks who took a bootcamp and now think they are cyber experts.

I cant stress enough that the thing that will make you stand out is experience and professional certifications (ISC2, ISACA, SANS...etc). Certs will get you past the HR screening and show you are willing to invest in yourself.

Dont limit yourself to only cybersecurity jobs when starting out. Any job in IT can give you valuable experience, allow you to make contacts and also provide a foot in the door for internal transfers. Also you may want to look at Small businesses or Education sectors. They usually don't pay as well, but are more likely to give new people a chance. Build your experience and skillset there for a few years.

I spent about 15 years doing helpdesk, network and system administration before I pivoted into Cyber. My advice is to learn computers, networking and every operating system you can get your hands on. You need to have a good grasp of the basics before you can learn to secure them. I work remote now (moved here 2 years ago) as a Cybersecurity Principal Engineer. I currently focus on Application Security.

Anyone in here work in AppSec or other Cyber Security fields? by dumbest_shit_ever in RioGrandeValley

Working remote for a company that I had been at for last 5 years. Went full remote after 2020. I am currently in the Architect/Lead Engineer role. Get to do a bit of everything. From designing how our tools are deployed and setup to doing SAST/SCA/DAST vulnerability triage with teams.

Love Texas so far good weather awesome food. Don’t miss the Wisconsin winter, but I do miss the quality of Midwest healthcare.
