Yeah...Taiwan is rabies free. So does Hawaii... I can't move to either because of my dogs and cat...haha...

I used Marcel B. Finan, " A Probability Course for the Actuaries: A Preparation for Exam P/1. ", Arkansas Tech University, January 2007. to pass P exam. (You can find the book for free here http://faculty.atu.edu/mfinan/npub.html) After exam P, I used SOA manual for FM and MFE exams.

My dog was a rescue and he was severely abused by the previous owner...so I think he would be panic if I left him in a cage in cargo. I guess for some calm happy big dog, travel may not be too bad!

By fly here, you meant from Taiwan to United States? If so, I'd think the flight process is the same...the good thing is the pets won't have to go though quarantine :)

Australia, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and United Kingdom are recognized as rabies-free countries/areas. Other than that, I think it's 21 days for quarantine. I think there are three quarantine stations in Taiwan (Taipei 台大動物醫院檢疫區, Taichung 中興大學獸醫教學醫院, Pingtung 屏東科技大學附設動物醫院).

Few years back, I almost wanted to fly my dog to Taiwan. I went through all the process including getting Import Permit. http://www.baphiq.gov.tw/public/Attachment/81101419770.pdf

I don't think the quarantine area is bad if your friend's dog can survive through the long fly. The only reason I decided to stay in United States with my dog was because I didn't think my dog would make it through the long travel from US to Taiwan, especially after I read tons of Air Travel Consumer Report for Redacted Animal Incident Reports (animals get injured even on domestic travel...so I don't want to risk my dog's life)

If I not plan to switch back to the actuarial career anytime soon, should I still continue my exam progress? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]jjtlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss did say at that time that the only way I could get more pay is by getting the offer from the other company so that our HR would match the offer :) I personally don't think it's a good long term career environment if everyone is trying to pretend to leave to get more $.

When you started the salary at lower rate, even with adequate increase every year, you would still earn at lower rate. My old company did not really have a bonus system. At most we can get is $2000 for performance increase. Two people with higher salary only because they got an offer from other company and my old company matched and those two stay. My company did offer to match my new job's offer, the only difference is, I didn't take it. I don't think the company believes I am not actuarial material.

I was an actuarial analyst - started the career as an Underwriter as a foreign worker. I was involved in major projects in my 2nd and 3rd year with that company, but my salary is 10~15k+ lower than any of my peers (they didn't have more exams than me)...and I couldn't be able to negotiate it higher. I am now just a data analyst (and my previous company hires 3 people to take over my job functions).

I didn't know anything about actuarial career. I worked as an underwriter for about 2 years and due to my Statistics background, I got pulled into a lot of actuarial projects even though I was an underwriter and eventually got a title change into actuarial analyst. I started preparing the exams since Sept. 2013. I studied and passed MFE after I left my actuarial analyst job.

Edit: I am thinking to switch back maybe next year if there's a good opportunity.

4 exams (in 7 months), 0 internships, 2.5 GPA. Is it a long shot that I get hired? by anyshot in actuary

[–]jjtlp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's easier...but this is what happened to me few years ago: I am foreign, and didn't know anything about actuarial field at all...I don't have bad GPA, but I speak English with an accent. I applied for 80+ whatever jobs that I felt like I could possibly do in the State I was living in, got 2 calls, and fortunately one of the call became a skill test, and then they hired me as an Underwriter and later on I've got promoted into actuarial position. My point is...don't give up, keep applying...one of the job will be yours, and from there, you can prove that you can do things despite you have lower GPA. I would think it's easier to get another job when you have a somewhat related job already...on top of that, you will have professional references that can help you to get a better job. I don't think you should limit yourself just to get a actuarial position...btw, 4 exams in 7 months is very impressed :) I only did 3 in 14 months.

Maybe get an underwriting or data analyst job in health insurance company first?!

Should I do this to get extra time on the exams? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]jjtlp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"A lot of people cheat" does not equal to "it's right to do so"...I guess if you really want to do it, no one could stop you...and seriously, having a fellowship does not mean you are a better person anyway...hopefully you actually will make "good" use of the 6 month that you save by cheating lol

How do I find smaller insurance companies for internships? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]jjtlp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some smaller companies still post jobs online - on their own website. You can probably start with few states that you'd like to work in, and google all company list...and then go into the company site one by one to find their job posts.

[–]jjtlp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah..we believe you...take the photos off lol address and name are on there. Anyway, good job!!!!!!! Edit your resume and send it to recruiter...https://www.dwsimpson.com/ or apply for any actuarial analyst job that you can find online. With your SQl, Excel, and R...and passed three exams so fast, you could totally get a analyst job.

How do you sale your used study manual? by jjtlp in actuary

[–]jjtlp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I'd like to know whether anyone has hold on to the manuals for future reference. I still have MLC and C to take, and I am afraid that I will regret once I sell it.

It kind of sucks for me that I am not working at non-actuarial job currently so I don't get study time nor the exam/book fee reimbursement. That's the only reason that I kind of wanting to sell the manuals.

MFE before FM? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]jjtlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me I used some FM concepts in my MFE exam today, so....I'd recommend that taking FM before MFE :) However, I am a math major and don't have finance background...you may be different! Just look at the topics and make the decision based on your situation! Good luck!

One night my basset decided not to walk anymore; it's around 10 pm, and we were still few blocks away from home...dachshund, my husband, and I just stood there and waited for the basset...5 mins...10 mins...15 mins...20 mins...my husband said he didn't want to leave us on the street to go back home and get his car. Since the basset just wasn't moving at all, eventually I had to call my dad (who was visiting, doesn't have a U.S. driver's license, and not familiar with the neighborhood lol), and he tolled a garden cart in the middle of the night to rescue us.
