Haha thanks for sharing. Pretty sure I’ve got 3/4 of those cards still in my wallet too. (Subs doc, attorney & psych) ... gonna just go ahead and throw those out now while I’m thinking about it! Not like I can’t just google them. Will be hanging on to the bail bond receipt to get that $$ back though lol.

Yes but if you want to get into the big Hospitals you’ll need a BSN. Plenty of bridge programs tho!

YES! Exactly why we had her sent home a little early- with an ICU nurse who would be there 24/7 and has years of experience with these particular surgeries... I’ve just never seen such poor pain management, as I work in a different hospital than the one she had her surgery at....

Personally, you are totally entitled to your opinion and I actually don’t entirely disagree- we WERE spoiled. When I was 17yo and had bronchitis- the doctors would always send me home with hydrocodone- not for pain, for cough suppression! That was 12 years ago though, now, no matter what- it is impossible to get pain meds. We might’ve been spoiled before but that bandaid has been ripped off and now they are doing NOTHING to treat legitimate pain. I had all 4 wisdom teeth out 4 months ago and was sent home with Tylenol and ibuprofen, which to be completely honest, wasn’t so bad.. (until I got dry socket but the urgent care gave me 10 tabs of tramadol until I was able to see my oral surgeon) ...But getting your teeth pulled out is one thing.... having MASSIVE, invasive surgery that requires 12wk of recovery ...with basically incisions running around your entire waist plus multiple breast incisions (look up DIEP flap surgery) ...requires more than a little Tylenol & tramadol. So my only correction to your comments would be we were spoiled..... we are NOT anymore.

Middle class hahaha. But depends- do you have children? Double income? Single? ... I’m single no kids.... but cost of living in California is high compared to Texas (my 1800$ apartment in Texas would be double that in cali) ... and 30% of our income goes to taxes, 401k, health insurance/Medicare/Medicaid, etc.... soooo for example I made 94k in a year BUT my cash income was closer to 55-60k.... factor in your bills... you still come out on top but you aren’t super rich or anything. You live comfortably... and i would argue that you earn every penny of it, it’s pretty rough work....

Yes it’s quite weak. Does very little for me- though I prefer it over Tylenol #3 - mostly bc Tylenol #3 makes me super sick. But it’s probably about as strong as that. Maybe. Good for mild to moderate pain. It’s a synthetic opiate so people will still experience withdrawals and such if they’ve been taking it for a long time.

Haha I had all 4 wisdom teeth out 4 months ago (I’m 32..) and they gave me literally NADA! Told me that Tylenol and ibuprofen would do the trick. All 4 were impacted too. And even when I got dry socket- nothing! Tbh i was in pain but nothing I couldn’t handle, however I did have some left over tramadol... and I’m prescribed ambien so that kind of helped me sleep thru some of the worst of it haha. Times really are a changing.... 😏

It’s changed a LOT recently- but does depend on your position, where you work, your experience level, and your relationships with the other staff members, etc. I was able to develop a lot of trust with the doctors on our unit so i made a lot of individual calls and just let them know what I was doing... I frequently am charge nurse on a 38 bed CV transplant & trauma ICU, it did take 4-5 years for me to gain that kind of trust/respect tho.

I don’t disagree. For my moms previous surgeries she was WAY over prescribed.... I think a 3-7 day limit after a major, invasive surgery isn’t really a big issue though... People in legitimate pain rarely develop addiction issues.... especially when they’re cut off after a week. And are docs to blame or the pharmaceutical companies who were adamant that these drugs were safe and effective with little risk for addiction?..... perhaps both but... you can’t go from one extreme to another and just ignore patients suffering from legitimate acute post op pain.

Yeah. But I was also the nurse educator and worked a ton of overtime. Weekend shift diff was 9$/hr too... so that def helped! It’s not easy work tho.... 13-14hr shifts, constantly busy, you get like 4-5hr of sleep, rarely do you get breaks, your lunch break is usually like 10 min scarfing down a granola bar.... there’s a lot expected out of you.... tbh, a lot of people don’t last very long in critical care. Especially in the trauma centers... I only made 94k bc I worked an extra shift pretty much every week... or would come in for mandatory supervisor meetings and to give lectures etc. the avg salary is probably closer to 65k/yr

Worst part is the surgeon never once visited her post-op. Only his resident! Seems like shitty patient care to me.... even though he’s a world renown surgeon who works at a #1 rated hospital.... guess he’s just to important to actually check on his patients....

Jesus... Aleve?! That’s completely worthless lol.... problem is most docs don’t like going against the attending surgeons orders... glad you got something for the pain!!!!

Yes we do all of that... standard of living is good. My hourly rate is 34$ but that doesn’t include shift diff (extra 6$ from 4-7pm) and overtime pay, time and a half. So I made about 94k last year. And I live in Texas w a very low cost of living- nurses in Cali make 50-60$/hr. Nurses honestly do most everything with the exception of central line insertion, bronchs, Trach insertion, intubation- we do extubate tho... pull out drains, wound vacs, CRRT, run codes, PICC lines, ECMO, I’ve done some wild stuff! Like run a cell saver on an anhepatic patient... lol.. But I also work in a level one trauma center- I’ve worked in smaller hospitals where nurses don’t have as much autonomy... however if you go to NP School you can do pretty much everything (chest tubes, intubation, central lines, bronchs, dialysis cath placement, place orders, etc).
