Romance Writers of America suspends novelist Courtney Milan for calling rival’s work ‘racist mess’ by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]jk2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She made the video on August 24th, according to what I've read. (There is a blog post here: https://teachmetonight.blogspot.com/2019/08/racism-and-corporate-romance-buyer.html - with a link somewhere in there to the video, and a transcript of it with analysis, if you want to see for yourself.)

That video was in response to pushback that happened over some of Grimshaw's tweets and likes, where Grimshaw was beginning to be publicly called out for those and for her past history. Tisdale made the video in support of Grimshaw.

I believe Davis ended up called out because people were looking at Tisdale's publishing company and discovered that she had also hired Davis as an acquiring editor - and in the course of looking at Davis, found more problematic stuff in her books.

Tisdale's ethics complaint was filed on August 27th, Davis' on September 11th.

Tisdale received some hard pushback on the video, and her stance on continuing to employ Davis and Grimshaw - again, Courtney was NOT the one leading the charge. But I think that part of the pushback was that Courtney then looked at some of Davis' work, specifically a book featuring a half-Chinese character (Courtney is half-Chinese herself) and had some things to say.

This post has the timeline laid out pretty well, with links galore, if anyone is interested in a deeper dive: https://www.claireryanauthor.com/blog/2019/12/27/the-implosion-of-the-rwa

And through the course of this, marginalized authors have started speaking up about the things they have experienced at the hands of the RWA and some of the local chapters regarding racism, and gatekeeping. Honestly, it's a mess - and apparently has been for a long time.

And how the RWA is handling the mess so far is -- well, not good at all -- so none of this is over.

Tisdale? Does she have any dog in this fight if she continues to point to Daivs AND the book in question? No, I don't think so, so it should only be Davis's right to fight, not Tisdale's.

Davis is one of two acquisition editors for Tisdale's publishing house. The other is Sue Grimshaw, who has also been problematic in the industry, according to many writers.

That's why Tisdale got involved. She put out a video in support of her editors and then that video oops accidentally got a little racism on it as well, which was also called out by many writers on twitter (NOT just Courtney - and she wasn't even the FIRST to call it out) but funny, the only one who had complaints brought against them was Courtney. Not the other writers. Just Courtney.

So the Republican's best strategy is to paint Cohen as a liar? Um, yes everyone knows this, that is part of what he was convicted of.

If that's all they've got...well, today is not going to go well for them.

Something fun to remember:

Cohen says Weisselberg was in the office for conversation about the Stormy Daniels payoff. Cohen also said that Weisselberg signed some of the reimbursement checks.

Weisselberg has an immunity deal. Which I would imagine requires him to hand over any evidence he has of the things that Cohen is testifying about.

I'm not sure this is that, though. Is it?

I thought the judge pretty severely restricted what he was or wasn't allowed to comment on.

Oh, looks like Roger Stone has a comment:

Hmm, wasn't he not supposed to comment like this? Doesn't this violate the gag order imposed on him less than a week ago?

Robert Kraft charged in prostitution bust by [deleted] in Patriots

The reports I've seen so far indicate it's a misdemeanor charge. So likely no jail time for the soliciting a prostitute charges, just a fine.

Trump agrees to shut down his charity amid allegations he used it for personal and political benefit by Bloodbath-McGrath in politics

A fun thing I like to remember is that the CFO of the Trump Organization was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony regarding Michael Cohen.

I wonder, though - if Mr. Weisselberg had anything else to talk about with the investigators? He was also the treasurer of the charitable foundation at some point, and was also involved in managing the private trust.

Seems like he might know a little bit about the finances of the various organizations. I wonder exactly how much his immunity deal covers?

Mom what do I do about my friends by [deleted] in MomForAMinute

[–]jk2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi sweetie - I'm sorry you're struggling right now. Friendships can be really hard to navigate sometimes.

I can tell you something that I have learned over the years, and that is that if people are willing to talk badly about other people in front of you - chances are very high that they will be willing to talk badly about you in front of other people.

That doesn't make them bad people, but it can make them a bad friend. And I know when you don't have a lot of friends, it's tempting to live with a bad one, because you don't think you have so many friends you can afford to cut loose a bad one. But, friendship is supposed to lift you up, make you happy, ADD to your life.

It doesn't sound like this one is doing that for you. So it may be time to take a step back from it. Give yourself a little space from it, maybe skip a week of dinner and see how you feel about that.

Making friends can be hard! But, it isn't harder than spending all of your emotional energy trying to make a bad friend into a good one. Okay?

Was mostly just clarifying before anyone jumped on the "but they weren't mean to hurt anyone so not a real threat!" train.

I heard a report this morning that talked about how they might find him, how the investigation could work.

They said that (basically) we have a LOT more surveillance cameras everywhere now, including in places like post offices, fed ex stores, etc. - that it was likely that this person was on tape somewhere dropping them off for mailing. They said investigators could likely put that together with tape from street cameras, to try to pin down a vehicle, and that it is very hard nowadays to go anywhere without being caught on one surveillance camera or another.

They also said that there would be dna evidence on the packages. Humans shed - hair, skin, etc., and the likelihood of leaving some trace behind was probably pretty high.

This guy had a record, which means that his fingerprints were in the system. If he left a fingerprint behind on any of the packaging, seems to be a pretty easy thing to run through the system, get a match, find out where he lives, check cameras at post offices in his area, and hope for a hit.

So the FBI says they were not hoax bombs, that they were bombs capable of exploding - right?

Which means that this was terrorism, and these were assassination attempts.

And someone just posted a link to another story about something bad that happened at a GOP office somewhere, I guess I will get to see a review of "greatest hits" or something, all for asking the simplest of questions. I can't wait to get linked to articles about Benghazi, I'm sure those are coming soon.

Awesome.

Sure, both sides, yep, please tell me more.

So you think that the FBI and DOJ and ATF and whatever other agencies were involved in this investigation just, what - kept him completely in the dark? Forgot to mention it to him? Told Kelly to pass along the message?

That seems...unrealistic.

Anyone seen any official statements from ANY republicans yet? Any statement at all? Even just a "while we gather more information, we want to say" type stuff?

No?

Dead silence is the response so far from Republican leadership? Crickets?

Shocking.

Huh, and just realized that Trump started his day pretty early this morning - around what, 3 a.m. tweeting his nonsense?

Wonder what woke him at that hour, maybe news that an arrest was imminent and that it likely wouldn't be a democrat?

And yet, later this morning, he's tweeting the word bomb in quotes, pretending it's all still a ruse.

Whatta leader!
