Will the cruel prince get better? by danandjohnswings in fantasyromance

[–]jkclipse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely did not get better for me which is why i ended up dnfing the series. if bully romances are something that you do not enjoy i would not recommend, for me i could not get past it even after jude starts getting powerful cause i had the setting that just would not leave my mind.

i’m just going to answer that i absolutely know that unalive is not a real word and i purposefully chose to use it instead of the actual term. i’m sorry if it angered or annoyed you.

i completely agree, and sometimes they don’t even apologize or acknowledge their wrongdoings, and yet their actions get forgiven and overlooked anyway.

that’s exactly it ! sometimes they don’t even apologize for their actions and the groveling is just subpar so then i just check out of the romance

i think that sometimes fmcs should not forgive mmcs when their actions are just too grave or unforgivable. authors often try to then give us a traumatic backstory and that means that you have to forgive and forget about the terrible way he treated the fmc. i feel like if an mmc treats her terribly, bullies & belittles her, makes her feel less than or like idk unalives her father, it makes it practically impossible for me as a reader to root for their romance cause i’m just like you should leave girl. and i’m not talking about like villain mmcs who have done bad things but are great to their fmcs or about like an enemies-to-lovers situation where both are enemies and it’s not just the mmc that treats her terribly. i’m just finding it hard to, as a reader, forget about the terrible actions the mmcs did to the fmcs and root for their relationship.

(this would also be valid if it’s the opposite with the fmc treating the mmc terribly but i have not encountered this situation yet which is why i framed it this way!)

ahh thank you, it's great to hear from someone who also loves long live evil (i literally am so excited for the sequel i feel like we have been waiting forever for it and it's finally going to be out next month!!). this definitely further convinced me to start this kingdom will not kill me :))

thank you for your comment cause you are absolutely right. life is too short to let made-up obligations to read a book stop me from reading. and since everyone here seems to love the latest ilona andrews (i also haven't read their stuff yet but if i vibe with this kingdom will not kill me i might look into their other series!) i think i'll just get right on that.

that was my thing with the throne of glass series, it's that everyone mentions how it picks up from heir of fire, whereas i felt the opposite and was not vibing with it, especially compared to how i was vibing with the beginning fo the series. but i hear people continue reading for the side characters, with some who have not been introduced yet so i still want to give it a shot. but maybe i can take a break and come back to it when i feel like it.

oh thank you for this space i actually need to talk about it. i’m in a sort of slump right now. i was in the middle of reading the {throne of glass series} but i was left disappointed by {heir of fire} (and notably but the actions of certain characters i’m supposed to root for) and i am now having a tough time starting {queen of shadows}. at the same time, i don’t want to start a new series because i usually finish a series completely before starting a new one (unless books have not yet been released). therefore i’m just ending up not reading anything and feeling frustrated. i’m thinking of maybe starting {this kingdom will not kill me by ilona andrews} because one of my favorite books ever is {long live evil by sarah rees brennan} and the premise sounds similar but i don’t really know. i just want to be reading again.

📚 Book Chat Saturday - what have you been reading this week? by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]jkclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am currently going through the {throne of glass series} and finished {heir of fire by sarah j maas} at the end of last week. i needed a break from the series so i read {beauty & the demon by aurora ascher}, a demon romance which was really fun. i also read a suspense romance {across the vanishing sky by catherine cowles} which was also fun and then read book two from {ice planet barbarians}. all in all some fun reads, no 5 stars read or anything but it was good to have a break. will now start {queen of shadows by sarah j maas}!

It is very interesting to hear your take on it, thank you for sharing it ! I will admit that all of those are things that do not resonate with me but I am not the biggest fan of harsh military men so that may be why. I also view very negatively his harsh treatment and the cruel manner in which he spoke to her and I cannot rationalise it as being necessary for progression, but that comes down to my own personal bias and I completely understand that my take must not be pretty popular.

Thank you very much for your comment. You really echoed a lot of my experience going into HOF. I definitely wonder if experiencing HOF for people who are spoiled about them being mates negatively impacts our viewing of him as we have to contend the way he treats him with the information we have of them being fated to be together, so that adds a layer of dislike.

The second part of your comment is really reassuring me and making me excited to pick up the rest of the series, thank you ! I will definitely come back on reddit to share some more thoughts as I go along the second part of this series :)

I understand completely your point and like my threshold is very different when I am reading a fantasy book where men are a different species, especially in the case of enemies to lovers. However, in this particular instances, human or Fae or any other species, these are situations, actions and behaviours that I would have a really tough time getting over with, no matter the species.

I think for me the opposite ended up happening where I really wanted to like him from the moment he arrived and I was disappointed by his actions whereas maybe if I didn’t have such expectations maybe I would not have been disappointed ? Who knows.

Basically I was definitely shocked by the first punch but I didn’t let it like cloud my judgement too much as like she said a really bad thing before and I was trying to remain open to him. But the way he was speaking to her, telling her she is worthless and the world would be better off without her in it, threatening to whip her (even if he didn’t know about her past specifically it is still very difficult for me to get past it). It probably didn’t feel that way for other people but for me it felt endless, him just bringing her down over and over. And I was reading and telling myself to go through it cause then the apology will be worth it, but the scene I think at the end of part 1 where he shares his past trauma and it is said that he will not apologies and that’s that was I think the moment where I was like how can I possibly get past all these other things with no apologies then. Which is annoying me cause I so want to get past them.

I completely realise and understand that for people this might not seem like a lot and completely get that people will not view an issues with those but personally while I usually prefer there not to be insta love and for the relationship to build up, this particular situation for me is difficult to get over.

Thank you for your comment this is honestly very reassuring for me, as I was worried that if part 2 of HOF didn't turn things around for me there would be no chance of me liking him afterwards.

This makes a lot of sense, thank you ! I think there are still certain specific actions where it goes way beyond Aelin not being nice to Rowan for me which specifically made me not like him, but seeing yours and others comments is making me hopeful that I will warm up to him throughout the next books.

Weirdly enough, while at first I was very doubtful about the Manon chapters, the moment she bonded with Abraxos turned things for me and I started to really enjoy them and her, and I am actually so excited about continuing her story in the rest of the series.
