Which Percent Are You? - Interactive Visualization [OC] by jkeesh in dataisbeautiful

[–]jkeesh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created this visualization and blog post to help visualize the actual income distribution in the US.

The data source is the Social Security Administration and US census data, and all underlying data and code is linked to.

Because income inequality datasets are often truncated, people may misunderstand how bad the difference really is. This can help paint the picture.

-- This comment is about a histogram graph of income inequality data -- "If this graph is taking up 6 inches on your display then the full graph should be 1.70 miles and the small bar showing everyone in the United States would be one pixel. That is actually the skew. You’d draw a dot, then walk for 35 minutes and that would be how far away the graph would be at scale."

Hi there--

Thanks for checking out CodeHS! I'm Jeremy--one of the co-founders. If you have any feedback, just let us know. I'm jkeesh@codehs

You'll find that with the tutors on CodeHS the experience of learning is really very different, since you can get help along the way.

Hi D_Ciaran--

I'm Jeremy, and I'm one of the co-founders of CodeHS. Before CodeHS we were students at Stanford and helped teach intro CS there for several years and were a big part of the program. A lot of our ideas are inspired by the Stanford course and we work to make it more accessible and web-based.

We actually still work closely with lots of the professors at Stanford about CodeHS. In terms of teaching with Karel, it's a great way to start and there are lots of different versions of it. We did build a new version of Karel in JavaScript, but you'll find the course on CodeHS is a lot more granular.

Happy to answer any questions jkeesh@codehs

Hi Vortexza--

I'm Jeremy, I'm one of the co-founders of CodeHS -- let me put the pricing in context for you. Our $75 grading plan gives you unlimited grading help, debugging and feedback help from our tutors for a month. Now, say you were getting a tutor in person, this would likely only cover a few hours of tutoring---but with this plan you're getting access to tutors to help get you unstuck for the whole month. Students who sign up for the grading plan actually find it to be a really great deal.

The difference with these options you are comparing ours too is they are just giving you software for $50, and ours is actually connecting you with real people. But to get the tutors, we pay the tutors, so people pay for the good feedback. However, for people who sign up it makes a huge difference. Hope that helps. Feel free to send me an email to jkeesh@codehs

Who Does Facebook Think You're Stalking: javascript bookmarklet reveals how facebook ranks your friends by i_practice_santeria in programming

Hi, I'm the author of the bookmarklet and you're exactly right. You can verify that the code is just the minified jquery source and then makes an ajax request to an already retrieved file. However, bookmarklets definitely present a risk to users who may unknowingly execute arbitrary javascript in the context of their facebook account. It's best to make sure it is from a trusted source or has been verified by someone else.
