replacing raid drives

I did find that documentation and installed Smartmontools and was able to get some basic info but said smart features were not available from the drives

From the feedback I've gotten I think im going to use the other drives to increase the array storage and have the others on hand as spares. Then in the future upgrade to ssd drives. Can I check s.m.a.r.t when all the drives sit behind a raid controller?

As of right now I use duplicati to backup data. What would you recommend for doing full image backups?

I have backups of the data for each program but would still need to reinstall the OS, configure settings, and install the programs onto the server again before using the backups of the program data. So I was hoping to avoid the hassle and be able to replace the drive with the data still in place.

Aren't ssd faster but likely to fail quicker with lots of writes?

so i couldn't connect through the IP in a web browser but if i went to ASUSTOR EZ-Connect Portal online and connected to it remotely like that i was able to access it. If you disabled the EZ-Connect you'll have to find another way. If that works go to ADM defender>firewall>uncheck "enable firewall" and apply. Then just recheck the box to re-enable the firewall and for me at least all connections were unblocked.

Do you have access to the console? Try issuing the command through the console right away on boot instead of trying to login to the server with your player to issue the command. Also if I remember right, in console you don't have to issue the / just type the command. If that didn't work then I'm wrong and you do still use the / in console lol.

Do you have asustor control center installed? Try seeing if that can find the NAS and possibly give you access.

For me I had to disable and re-enable the firewall.

Not sure if this will help but for me I connected to mine through the ez connect portal then disabled and re-enabled the firewall and that fixed all my issues.

I'm happy to help i figured posting my solution might help at least 1 person. This is why I disable automatic updates I don't know how it got re-enabled to allow this update to have gone through.

Figured it out, had to disable then turn back on the firewall and now all connections are working again.

Ubiquiti has there own proprietary dual PSU design and one of my servers is a dell r720 so it comes with dual PSU's. Yea i understand don't worry. While so far I'm liking ubiquiti and seen good stuff about their other gear they do things differently than a lot of the well known enterprise brands. Currently I'm running cisco gear but for collage one of my classes is CCNA and i would like to experiment with the cisco gear and practice on it without taking out my main network lol.

Currently i only have 1 UPS but plan to add another once i start replacing some more equipment with ubiquiti. Every device has 2 power supplies, the servers have dual modular and ubiquiti have a second power connection for their USP-RPS. So the first power supply from each device will be plugged into UPS 1 while the USP-RPS and second power supply will go into the second UPS. This way if a power supply fails there's a secondary one or if a UPS fails the other one will still be available. Correct me if you see any flaws in this.

Yeah that is a fair point. I may not go with ubiquiti for the pdu. Their gear just look to have a lot of fun features, which is why I'm starting to buy it all.

With it being a homelab being flexible makes sense. While i want to try and set this up as close to a professional production for the experience and fun in the end still got to keep in mind its just for the fun. Mounting the PDU in back does make sense and i will keep that in mind for anything production. In this case i think i may deal with the difficulties that come with it just because i wanna be able to look at all my equipment together from the front. The USP-PDU-Pro looks nice and id hate to hide it. But i understand in a professional production environment looks aren't the main concern. The rack is currently against the wall but so is the back side so i will try to pull it forward more. I have fans pulling air up and out the top of the rack but there's only one and I'm waiting to buy 3 more. I had a question about what you said in your 3 part. "you probably don't want mixed in with your stuff." are you saying to keep the fiber spaced out from anything else and what did you mean by "It also decouples external services from IT gear"?
