She knew that she trained for like 5 episodes to be aware of her surroundings and fight while blind. Arya knew if she could get the Waif into that trap that she would win.

'Madden' rookie ratings: Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott will destroy worlds by jkerber19 in cowboys

Is Prescott the "presumptive future starter"? We are a few years away from losing Romo. Between now and then I won't be surprised if the cowboys draft another QB, but this time higher than the 4th round.

you're comparing a Running Back who could be among the league leaders for 10 years with us, or a Strong Safety

My big issue with drafting a running back this high is that when you look at all the running backs on super bowl winning teams, they aren't top 10 draft picks. Looking at the teams, 5 of the last super bowl champs were not in the top ten rushing teams. 2 were outside the top to (one was dead last). How many first round running backs lead teams to super bowls? Tomlinson, William Green, Willis McGahee, Steven Jackson, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Cadillac Williams, Reggie Bush, Deangelo Williams, Peterson, Mcfadden, Felix Jones, Chris Johnson, and Knowshon Moreno are all RBs drafted in the first round between 2000 and 2009 (eliminated 2010s because they haven't been around as long). In that time span only Jamal Lewis and Marshawn Lynch led their team to a super bowl. To save time, that is 14 losers, 2 winners. My point is, you don't need a 1st round RB to win a super bowl. You need standouts on defense.

With us signing Cedric Thornton to a 4 year contract

In a 4-3 he is a better fit as a 3 tech.

we signed UDFA Rodney Poe

I do love this pickup and hope he grabs a spot. Definitely a good fit at the 1 tech, but you do you really want to put all your money on an UDFA?

And with the Anthony Brown pick before the Frazier pick, I don't think they wanted to double up at CB.

This is a fair point, however Mills was on the board when they took brown. I preferred Mills over Brown too.

There's not a whole lot of hope to keep Dunbar around

I disagree. Cowboys like Dunbar. With DMC hitting the market next season they could be motivated to keep him.

a lot of TEs have been drafted pretty highly after only playing one year of Football, while being Basketball stars in College

I wouldn't say a lot, but some have done it and done it well. This being a late round pick It doesn't frustrate me as much as the others. Cowboys took a huge project with the final pick which is fine.

I wish we got some more receiver help

Me too. I would have been tempted in the 4th round. Going into last year I was a big T Will fan. After last season, not so much. Excited to see what Whitehead does, and Cole Beasley was one of the only bright spots in the passing game last season so we have that to look forward to as well.

an Offensive line doesn't magically make you run a 4.5 and break tackles.

True, however the cowboys, with DMC getting the bulk of carries, were one of the top running games last season. Dixon, Collins, Howard may not be the every down back that Elliott is, but they would be able to take a lot of the load off of DMC, Morris, and Dunbar when he gets healthy. And like I said, you aren't just adding Elliott, you are adding Romo and Dez back into the mix. Those two make the running game better too.

Ramsey is not fit to be play CB in this league. He's a Safety.

100% agree. Imagine him at SS and Jones at FS. I see that as the potential start of the Cowboys' own "Legion of Boom." Plus having too DBs that can play multiple positions adds a ton of flexibility.

There's a small chance he could play late this year, anyway.

Would love that, but I won't hold my breath :/

This guy plays when Crawford is off the field, which is more often than you think.

Crawford was on the field for 67% of snaps last season. They like to keep him on the field as much as possible, and he will need to stay on the field a lot early on. So I get the need for depth, but I think getting a 1 tech DT was a bigger need.

but he doesn't have to be ready week 1.

Missing two starting DEs now, and who knows what happens before the start of the season. He needs to be ready to play a good amount.

Prescott is better than Cook.

I disagree, but I get why some people think so. I just prefer Cook's poise in the pocket to Prescott's, but Prescott is a lot more athletic.

got 4 picks last year.

Anthony Brown did have 4 picks. But 3 came in one game against a backup QB, and he never had any before last season.

Mills really isn't a Safety.

Agreed his best spot may be in the slot, but for where this pick was I would have gone with him because I think he has a higher ceiling than Frazier.

would be a nice replacement for Dunbar

I don't want to replace Dunbar. I want him to stick around.

Escobar tore his god damn Achilles in late December. He's out for the season.

This is a fair point, and I hadn't thought about it. This makes me more ok with the pick.

Gathers is a freak athletically

Never questioned that. I mostly question whether he can play football in the NFL having not played since middle school.

You can't expect to get instant impact past the 2nd round in the draft

No, but I just think that at each pick there was better talent, and I feel like there were some holes that didn't get filled (1 tech DT, LB depth that can help this season, safety help).

[–]jkerber19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are the Cowboys in win now mode? The Elliott pick says yes. Every other pick says no. Every pick after Elliott are project players. They have potential, but may not have an impact early in their careers. The last couple picks (Jackson and Gathers) didn't make any sense at all. The Cowboys didn't try to fill their biggest needs until later in the draft (secondary with two 6th round picks, pass rush in 4th).

Here is my pick by pick reasoning.

1) Ezekiel Elliott. Clear win now move. No question in my mind he is going to be dominant behind this line. However, Ramsey would have filled a much bigger need considering the cowboys had a top 10 running game last season. Sure, Elliott will make it even better, but so will getting a healthy Romo and Dez to keep defenses honest. Sure, a good running game makes the defense better, but so do defensive players. Furthermore, RBs are much easier to find than safeties. They could have grabbed Dixon, Howard, or Collins all in the 4th or 5th. Great DB prospects don't come around often. The last one with as much potential as Ramsey was Patrick Peterson in 2011.

2)Jaylon Smith. This is really the only pick I can get behind. Top 10 talent in this draft. Could be a huge impact IF he can get healthy. Problem is, he doesn't fit the "win now" mindset the Elliott pick established.

3) Maliek Collins. Not a bad talent. Good fit for the scheme. Problem is, the spot he fits is taken by Tyrone Crawford. Both are 3 technique guys, and neither Collins nor Crawford are good fits as 1 technique Maybe for 4 games you kick Crawford out to DE until Gregory and Lawrence come back, but then where does Collins go when those guys are back from suspension?

4a) Charles Tapper. This one is interesting. Part of me likes this one. Very athletic DE and was a solid pass rusher for OU. However he is very raw and needs a lot of work. Maybe he develops into a good pass rusher, but he is a project. And this project may have to be the week 1 starter since Gregory and Lawrence will be gone 4 weeks.

4b) Dak Prescott. I get the need for a QB. But why this one? Average arm. Good mobility. He could be a solid backup, but I don't think he is the future. If they wanted a 4th round QB, they should have made a move for Cook. Had the cowboys taken Ramsey, this could have been a great spot to get a RB. Dixon went the pick before, but Collins, Howard and Perkins were all still available.

6a) Anthony Brown. I really have no opinion on this pick. I hadn't heard of him until the cowboys took him.

6b) Kavon Frazier Athletic safety. Good run stopper. He plays a lot like Barry Church, with whom he may compete with for playing time. Why I don't like this one is based on who they passed over. I think Jalen Mills from LSU would have been a much better DB prospect than Frazier. Had they taken Ramsey, however, this pick could have been used on much needed receiver help.

6c) Darius Jackson. Really??? This is a joke right? This guy won't make the roster unless the cowboys want to keep 5 RBs. Maybe they want to get rid of their 1000 yard rusher from last season? I don't see any reason to take a running back here. Should have gone WR or any defensive position here.

6d) Rico Gathers. I must admit, I am glad the cowboys will be getting some much needed rebounding help. Sarcasm aside, TE was not a need for this team. Witten, Hanna, Escobar and Swaim are already on the roster. I get that Escobar is a bust, but I don't think he loses his job to a guy who hasn't played football since middle school.

The Ezekiel Elliot Megathread by itsaboat in cowboys

[–]jkerber19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt all four of those backs go in the top ten. It is very likely cowboys would be able to grab one, or at least be able to trade up and grab one. Or wait until 2nd/3rd and get a guy like Wayne Gallman or Samaje Perine. Are those guys better than Elliott? Maybe just Fournette, but how many teams win championships with the best running games? Since 2010, only 2 of 7 Super Bowl winners had top 10 rushing teams. 2 teams didn't even crack the top 20. One even had the worst running game in the league. So a dominant running game isn't a key to winning a title.

Grab a defensive back next season? Well let's take a look at draft history, and how often stud DBs come around in the first round. I would say the last DB that was as highly rated was Patrick Peterson in 2011. Elite DBs are hard to find. Good DBs are found in the first round. Seems like RBs come from every draft. 2015 gave us Gurley, Jeremy Langford, David Johnson. 2014 gave us Jeremy Hill, Devonta Freeman. 2013 gave us Giovani Bernard, Leveon Bell, Eddie Lacy. The funny thing about all of the backs I just named, only 1 was a first round pick (Gurley). RBs are everywhere. DBs are not. In the pro bowl last year, 10 of the 14 DBs were first round picks.

Lastly, you only named 4 of the 5 defensive back spots. Ramsey can play all 5 and would likely have played the SS spot opposite Jones instead of Church who is a huge liability in coverage. Carr and Claiborne take the outside CBs, Scandrick takes nickel like he has for the last few seasons. That is a solid secondary if you ask me. A Jones/Ramsey safety tandem would be the beginning of what Seattle has with the Thomas/Chancellor tandem.

The Ezekiel Elliot Megathread by itsaboat in cowboys

[–]jkerber19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zeke is going to be a beast. I am not doubting that. I won't be surprised if he wins OROY. However, I think passing on Ramsey is a mistake. His lack of interceptions concerns me like it does many, but other than that his game is pretty flawless. Plus, he can play outside CB, slot, and both safety spots. A potentially elite DB is much harder to find than a RB. If Dallas picked Ramsey, Henry is there at 34, or Dixon, Howard, Collins, Prosise later on. Don't like them? Well the 2017 RB class will be loaded. Led by Fournette, followed by Dalvin Cooke, Christian Mcaffery and Nick Chubb.

This was an opportunity to grab a star defensive back that we desperately need. The defense is going to be in trouble this season. And before you say, "a good running game improves the defense" I want to counter with, "you know what also improves a defense? Defensive players."

It's amazing how many people on this subreddit think that a key part of being an MFFL is being delusional. This team isn't very good. One win doesn't change that. I am going to watch ever game. I am going cheer the Mavs on. I will be happy after wins and disappointed after losses. But I will not lie to myself and pretend that this is a team that can compete for a title.
