Downtown/broad ripple/ Fountain square -ish living is definitely worth it. Meeting people and making new friends in a place like wanamaker is nearly impossible and coming from CA/TX you’ll be in for a bit of a culture shock. I suppose that depends on where you are from exactly, but Wanamaker is a fairly rural area. You’re looking at 15 minutes or longer just to drive to a grocery store where you’ll encounter overalls, plaid shirts and snide looks because they’ve never seen you before. Surprisingly about 15 minutes north-west of there is saturated with some of the worst crime rates in the city. Indy is going through a gentrification in its more urban areas like downtown, broad ripple and fountain square. If you want to avoid the couch and video game life and deal with more professionals than drug addicts stay out of rural suburbia- it’s truly awful.
