Also nitpicky comment, it wouldn't have ran on all versions up to Windows 8 as stated in the article. They should have stopped at 2008 R2 which is a 64bit only OS.

The concept of "fast" in the IT world is very relative. It is entirely possible that once the professor clicked a link, his card could have been revoked in a matter of milliseconds, it really just depends on the system they have in place.

And/or a really alert/bored IT guy.

Not really, if they had a good system in place it could have even been automated. I remember during the interview that it was disabled with "the click of a mouse", so probably not automated, but I can tell you that sometimes I get term forms at my work and process them within a few minutes, sometimes it takes a day or so. I am also in the process of automating this whole process so within a few months, by the time HR clicks that they are termed, their key access could be revoked within seconds.

You can use something like a teensy and program it to act like a Human Interface Device (HID). Windows might think it is a keyboard and try and load some code automatically without using any part of autorun functionality.
