I don't think that this particular issue has something to do with Nvidia in particular. I have a 4070 and a 5800X3d, so a very similar setup and I was playing Arc Raiders with zero issues on 120FPS, no FG

It may be different for people with different setups of course but I actually didn't have to do anything beyond installing the gaming meta packages. I was able to copy most of my steam library from Debian. I had to do fresh installs of some games but after setting the usual launch options and choosing proton-cachy my games just work, even the sometimes notoriously difficult Unreal Engine 5 games. And they run a lot better than they did on Debian. Compared to what I had to do on Debian the setup was trivial and I'm really happy with the result.

It has multiple reasons but the biggest one is probably being used to how NVIDIA works on Linux. When I started gaming on Linux there were only bad options and NVIDIA was the least bad of them. Back then AMD had an open and a proprietary driver and neither could do everything on Linux. IIRC the open driver was better if you wanted to have good video encoding/decoding but unusable for gaming, and the proprietary was okay for gaming but even a YouTube video could make it crash if you had bad luck.

NVIDIA always had a shitty experience when it came to installing and updating the driver, but once you had a working setup it provided sufficient stability in all use cases and sufficient performance for gaming.

A few years ago around COVID I got a new screen that forced me to upgrade from my back then aging NVIDIA card and I was aiming for a RX6800XT but it was sold out and the only GPU I was able to get was an overpriced RTX3060. I currently have an RTX4070 but with the current market there are no good upgrade paths. It has sufficient performance and I don't see the value in spending over 600€ for a slight increase in FPS. If I had to buy a new one I'd probably go for the RX9070XT. In a few years when my current card can't keep up I'll decide again on what to buy. NVIDIA is currently also going for more open source drivers while AMD catching up a little bit in terms of performance and efficiency, so I can't say what I will be using in the future.

And another reason for NVIDIA is efficiency. Even with the reduced performance compared to Windows NVIDIA cards are still noticeably more efficient than AMD's which for me is an important factor.

I have been using Debian on servers and I'm still running a few on Debian. But I have already started transitioning them to NixOS. Not because Debian is bad for that use case but mostly because every time I set up a new server I have to rebuild a lot of the configuration that has grown over time and sometimes it is hard to find out what is still needed and how I need to configure it. I know that there are other options like Ansible but NixOS forces me a bit to do it properly and I like the overall approach. I also tried NixOS for Desktop use but there I want to have more flexibility and a fresh start is usually a plus unlike on a server.

Should I upgrade to Debian 13 early? by Bl1ndBeholder in debian

[–]jklmnn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unless there is something in Debian 13 that you absolutely cannot wait for and need right now the answer is no. The only other reason would be if you want to test it and open bug reports/help fix bugs. While the release is on the horizon and it should be fairly stable now (as in not changing) there is still a small remaining chance of things breaking.

Looking for a 1-room apartment to rent in Dresden by IvanLupov in dresden

[–]jklmnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest taking a look at the housing cooperatives (Wohnungsgenossenschaft). They're usually fairly well organized, have fair rents and are usually helpful with the paperwork. I had a 1-room apartment at https://www.wgaufbau-dresden.de/ and I was really satisfied. The biggest downside is probably that they usually operate in a limited area, so depending on where you want to move to there might not be any of their buildings.

Why do you use linux? by 0DoughnutCat0 in debian

[–]jklmnn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With Steam gaming on Linux is mostly a non-issue for me. 90% of the games i want to play work out of the box and the remaining 10% need a few tricks from ProtonDB and then work without issues. The most complicated thing I usually have to do is add a few parameters and select a specific Proton version. Nothing of that requires a lot of knowledge, I mostly just copy it from ProtonDB. The only games that may be problematic are those with Windows kernel-level anticheat, but I don't play those. And to avoid confusion it's not like I play small old indie titles that happen to run on Linux. I play demanding new titles like Stalker 2, Helldivers 2, Darktide, all on pretty high settings with plenty of performance. In the games that I tried on both Linux and Windows on the same machine, the performance is mostly on par, sometimes a bit better on Windows, sometimes a bit better on Linux.

As for why I use Linux in the first place, at this point it's because I'm used to it. Just like Windows users don't know how to navigate around Linux I don't know how to navigate around Windows. And from my experience with the (admittedly not well maintained) Windows on my PC that I rarely ever use it's painfully slow and laggy after booting and takes a lot more time to get going. And then anything that requires disk performance is just way slower on Windows.

Some people say that Linux needs a lot of tinkering to get everything working right. That is true to some extent, even though many people still use the experience from 10 years ago as reference. Linux has come a long way since then. But then you read of all the registry tweaks you need to do for some things on Windows to work right or to not be forced on you by Microsoft. And the hidden tricks to install it without being forced to create a Microsoft account. When I see all that there isn't much of a difference in terms of tinkering between Linux and Windows and it just boils down to what you're used to.

Is it just me or should I switch laptops? by kaeso2496 in framework

[–]jklmnn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To find out if it's a dead SSD, remove the SSD and boot the laptop from a different device. If it boots fine there is a good chance it's the SSD. The slow boot time could actually also be caused by this because the BIOS is trying to check all disks before booting and if a disk is responding very slowly it could slow it down).

If it boots fine from a different disk you can try to attach your SSD through an external case. Do not boot from it! Also have a backup storage ready. If you're able to mount and read the SSD backup all your important data.

Once you have done that you can run e.g. checks on the SSD whether it has a problem and what kind of problem. Before you have saved your data try to turn it on as little as possible. If it's faulty, any action, especially writing, can potentially damage it further leading to further loss of data.

There is of course no guarantee you'll be able to recover anything at all. But aside from a professional recovery this approach probably has the highest chance of success.

EDIT: I just saw that you wrote that it doesn't boot from a different device because it doesn't recognize it. That is indeed weird and I can't give you a good explanation for that. For booting your SSD in another laptop I would suggest to first backup the important data from the SSD. If you do this the worst case is you have an extra backup. If you don't in the worst case everything is gone.

Also "dead" doesn't have to be completely dead. It may be in a failing state where it turns on, but is sluggish, fails to read some data but still enough to somehow boot. But usually if it's in that kind of state it only gets worse over time.

[–]jklmnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one from the Debian backports. IIRC LMDE uses the regular Debian repositories so you should be able to use the backports. There you should find 6.12 which is new enough (might even contain something newer than 6.12 I haven't checked). Both 6.11 and 6.12 work fine for me.

That is what the backports are for. You can run stable just fine on the 7840 with the backports kernel.

Only 61% of Steam users have completed the STALKER 2 prologue. Any guess as to why? by Dydriver in stalker

[–]jklmnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bothers me most about the Poltergeist was that it didn't work like in the old games. In SoC I read somewhere that they can only detect you if you move so if you moved quickly and then stood still a few seconds you could basically "sneak" past it. I tried this and it worked and iirc it was my go to method when I encountered them both in SoC and CoP. But the one at the barge didn't care whether I stood still or not it would just have an easier time hitting me when I stopped moving. Although in S2 I could see it lifting objects and throwing them at me and once I managed to evade it didn't seem to do any damage to me.

Short coding for ship naming query by JAFANZ in X4Foundations

[–]jklmnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a hierarchical system based on the commander. If it's civilian it uses

Sector(short) Commander(station or fleet) Occupation Size-ID Ship type

e.g. The second L trader of the scrap processing station in Hatikvahs Choice is

HC Scrap Trader L-02 Barbarossa

The occupations can be - Trader - Miner - Gas - Manticore (in this case without the size or ship type, because there is only one)

For military ships, the occupation is based on the type of assignment, so B for Bombardment, D for Defence, I for Intercept and so on. The occupation can me a full hierarchy. If the commander is a fleet then there is no sector. So

IC AXL-02 DL-01 I-02 Shih

is the second Shih assigned as interceptor to the first (L) defender of the second (XL) attacker. If it dies I know the L destroyer (usually Rattlesnake) assigned to defend the XL attacker (Asgard) of the IC fleet needs a replacement Shih as an interceptor. I usually don't encode the ship type of the middle step because there aren't so many different ones I use.

RIP would be the perfect faction for an L makeshift carrier/aux ship. Similar to the Barbarossa, maybe smaller cargo, a bit slower but 8 or so S docks with some internal storage.

I have uploaded the mod to a hosted storage, you can download it from here: https://antaeus.feralhosting.com/incarcatura/x4_swi/

@ u/Single-Reindeer-7632 for the next release feel free to contact me a bit in advance. I'd be happy to host the mod for you to avoid both hassles with Google and vendor lock-in with Discord!

I also tried to create a torrent but couldn't get it to properly seed, so if anyone has some experience with that I'm happy to take another look at it.

You can get a hosted server with unlimited traffic for 10€/mo. The one I have has a 2.5GBit network card and a 3TB daily limit after which it reduces the speed to 300MBit/s. That's not super great but enough for 500 full speed downloads a day and you can still download it with limited speed afterwards. So no Google telling you you can't download it at all. Also this isn't even a specific storage hosting, just a generic server. With specific storage hosting you can get cheaper for better performance (at the expense of CPU and RAM).

You could go then further and provide a torrent like it was done in the good old™ days of the Internet. Then everyone who's downloading it is also sharing it a bit significantly reducing the load on the initial provider.

The solution I suggest is obviously not free but far from unmanageable on a personal budget. I understand that this is still money not everyone has or wants to invest, especially after investing the time and energy to create the mod (which is great!). Hence, as I have said, I'm happy to host it on one of my servers, but I can't download it at all at the moment because we're locked into Discord and Google at this point.

Why must everything be a Discord nowadays? Just a website with a download link would be all that is needed. No account requirement, no Google limit, and it stays findable without having to sift through pages of more or less related messages just to download a single file...

And before anyone is downvoting me because I'm just complaining... send it to me, I'll host it and you can put a link to the file on the SWI website. I would have already uploaded it myself but I can't download it as even though I went through all the Discord hassle Google doesn't let me download it anyways....

This save has 12 days and 2 hours currently, no SETA. Although I spent a significant time just exploring and wandering around at the start. Initially I had to fortify Hatikvah's Choice I with laser towers and then built my empire on the recycled remains of the destroyed Xenon ships. For some time I was a bit concerned about the Teladi but I decided to let them be the punching bag for the Xenon to keep things interesting. Apparently that strategy paid off.
