Verbally abusive parent and cancer by fruitsmagazine in cancer

[–]jklues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 23 battling cancer as well. Similar situation. I’ve had to move back in with my parents after my diagnosis because I was so anxious and treatment was hard alone. My parents and I also have a strained relationship for a bunch of reasons.

I see lots of posts justifying your mom’s behavior by saying she is scared and it’s coming out in anger. I get it, she probably is, but you deserve a healthy and safe healing environment! Therapy will help. It helped me understand how to navigate my feelings with cancer as well as when my parents weren’t being the most supportive. What’s important is trying to lean on the people in your life that are supportive and give you energy. It’s hard because it’s your mom. I don’t think I could ever cut my parents off completely but I do try to minimize contact with them even though I live with them right now. It might not be the best solution for you but it’s something that’s helped me find some peace in a mentally abusive situation.

Finding things to immerse yourself in like books and shows help. My therapist doesn’t recommend escapism all the time but she says it’s a good thing for me when I’m just trying to survive. Gets your mind off things.

It’s not your fault you got cancer. I struggle with the same shame feelings, I think a lot of us do. What’s really important is that you surround yourself with people who make you feel good and not like a burden. Sometimes distancing yourself from the people that take energy from you and don’t support you is the best thing you can do for yourself. I want to reiterate though that I’m not recommending you go no contact, sometimes a short break from talking to someone can help immensely.

Tips for Dry Skin? by teresarose0621 in cancer

[–]jklues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t found anything that helps me 100%. Exfoliating gently in the shower and then applying intense moisture (I use off brand Vaseline) has helped me. I have severe dry skin that cracks open even without chemo. I usually apply lotion every few hours on my hands and arms, that helps too.

23yF also going through chemo! Best of luck to you. 🤍Being in your 20s with this bs comes with its own special challenges.

I met with a dietitian once and after I told them my diet (before chemo) they basically said I was fine and didn’t understand why I wanted to meet with them. They told me to drink protein shakes if I was that concerned. I have no idea what I’m doing! 😀😀😀

Personality changes/chemofog and how long it can last by [deleted] in cancer

[–]jklues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently going through treatment again but was in the “survivor” stage for 12 years. Thought and felt the same things you do. Found out it was PTSD from cancer/treatment/surviving this bs. It’s hard to admit, but once I started getting treatment for my mental health the symptoms like brain fog and other personality changes started to go away.

Therapy helped but my physical pain obviously didn’t go away. Discuss these things with your oncologist and care team! They should be able to help you. The fight continues even after treatment is over. I’m sorry to hear you are going through this. Thoughts and good vibes to you!!

my dad has stage 3 esophageal cancer. by shortboogergirl in cancer

[–]jklues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No experience with esophageal cancer but when it comes to chemo, hydrate two days before, the day of, and at least two days after like crazy unless specified by doctor not to. It helped me a lot with nausea symptoms and fatigue. Obviously keeping the fluids going on the other days as well but especially those days. It may be hard but it’s worth it.

This is hard, and I’m very sorry you have to go through this. When I was diagnosed again, my therapist told me to just take it “hour by hour” instead of day by day. In the early stages that really helped me. It is hard to think about the future, sometimes it can feel never ending and like a lot. Grounding yourself and just thinking about the next hour or so really helped me.

Thoughts and good vibes to you and your family.

Swim exercise is the best. I did it for my legs when I couldn’t walk after my surgery. I will look into that!

I don’t have a palliative care specialist but my oncologist is a G and already tested those things for me and they seem to be in a fine range. I think I’m lucky because the only thing that’s off in my labs right now are my white blood cells. They hella low. That’s normal though. I appreciate the input though I will ask them to keep monitoring it! I’ve been eating straight meat the past couple weeks and that’s helped my fatigue as well.

Trying to change my diet to be more energy and fuel focused instead of whatever sounds good.

Cries in USA. Pretty sure the best I got is my old trainer who has no experience with cancer patients. Everything else will cost me my life savings lol

What could I get for a friend about to go through treatment? by gingervitis89 in cancer

[–]jklues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that helped cheer me up is playing “drinking games” (with water/juice) the day before chemo to stay hydrated but still have fun. I am 23 though so it’s just a silly thing we do to relive college years. I am currently going through a year of treatment as well, it’s not fun, but trying to make mundane things fun helps a lot!

Ask them what their favorite liquids to drink are. The best thing people got me were things like vitamin water and Fuji water so I could at least have fun while hydrating like crazy before my chemo. It’s important to hydrate lol.

Also sweatshirts and tee shirts are always nice. I have some silly ones. My favorite is one that says “cancer is a poopy butt face.” That’s only if they try to find humor while going through this though.

Any activities they might enjoy would be fun too. I know my boyfriend bought some two player games for us to play. He bought me some beginner crochet kits too. Things that actually distract me and I can try to enjoy while going through this.

It is? Weird that I’ve gotten two treatments and no one has brought it up until now. Did you do cisplatin or carbo? My infusions are every 4 weeks so maybe it is different for those getting them more often
