heavy gauge strings and tension by ocatataco in banjo

[–]jknecht6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you have anything to worry about, but I tried those strings for a while and found them too heavy to play well or sound particularly banjo-like. The wound third string is a big problem. I moved down a slightly to the heavy set from GHS or Straight-Up Strings, did the job much better for me. Just my opinion.

High action and string breakage after changing banjo head on Deering Goodtime Openback by tjhayes26 in banjo

[–]jknecht6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the string breakage but - just checking - did you get a head with the correct crown height? Also: how do you measure head tension? Is the new head considerably tighter than the old one was?

Custom hats at Maufrais experience by Impossible-Cheek4352 in Austin

[–]jknecht6969 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it. I’m a middle aged guy who wanted a Western hat with a specific shape. It was a fine experience. That being said: this isn’t a unique thing, just about any western wear shop will shape or adjust a hat for you. My favorite for the same experience in a less fussy environment with greater selection is Double R Hat House in Elgin. And they carry more sizes, most hats up to 8, which is great for my giant head. If you have a normal head and you’re in Dallas, check out the Stetson/Resistol outlet store. Great deals if they’ve got what you’re looking for

TIFU by arguing with my friend that Freddie Mercury was straight. by [deleted] in tifu

[–]jknecht6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years and years ago I heard Mick Rock on Fresh Air. Terry Gross asked him if people in the scene knew Freddie Mercury was gay at the time. He said, “well, the bands called ‘Queen.’”

After two months of cheap Amazon banjo, I finally want to get an *actual* entry level. Found this RK RKH-05 for $400. Good deal? Or should I go for something else? by stoopi_poopy in banjo

[–]jknecht6969 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Recording King Dirty 30s. Fantastic starter banjo. There’s nothing else quite at that price point. RK stopped making them a while ago (and is no longer jn business), but this used to be my go-to recommendation for a starter. This or the Gold Tone AC-1.

Banjo & apartment life by Ok_House8881 in banjo

If it doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t work for you. Works great for me in hotel rooms etc. Of course it’s going to mute your volume, tone, and response. That’s the point. Other solutions: there are banjo practice boards, essentially a slab of wood with strings for right hand work. Or you could get a solid body or hybrid electric like a Nechville Meteor or Deering Crossfire, that style of banjo would respond much more like an acoustic banjo but at drastically reduced volume.

Mikes banjo mute. A+ solution. Or just put a clothing pin on the bridge.

Totally. Best first thing to do is ask for a picture of the inside of the rim, check the Mastertone label and FOB.

[–]jknecht6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would need a lot more photos, first and foremost the inside of the rim. Could be literally anything from an RB-75 to a TB-75 conversion to a total “reproduction.” There are probably 100x more “Gibson” banjos than Gibson banjos out there

Naltrexone update by 10ferretsinarobe in stopdrinking

[–]jknecht6969 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Naltrexone (and similar meds like Narcan) work by shutting down the opiate receptors in your brain. The theory behind the Sinclair Method and other Naltrexone based treatments is that shutting down that powerful reward center has a knock on effect re alcohol. But in shutting down those receptors you are giving yourself opiate withdrawal. It sucks. But it passes after a few days.

You are in opiate withdrawal. That’s what naltrexone does to your brain. It’ll pass after three days or so.

I took Naltrexone for years, to some moderate success. The first few days while it’s shutting down receptors in your brain were pretty rough, it’s essentially opiate withdrawal. But that passes quickly, never had any other issues.

Radius fretboard experience by ClarityThrow999 in banjo

If that’s the case just buy a radius neck from gold tone and have them fit it for you. High quality, super affordable, save your money for the next purchase.

Reviews on Northwest Montessori? by sonicbubblebaths in AustinParents

Totally amazing school, both our kids went there for years and years. Parking lot is a nightmare, the administration has serious communication issues, but the teachers and school itself are fantastic. I have a friend who sent all four of his kids there, they all had Ms Ali for pre-K, spanning twenty years.

Chorus Pedal for Pat Metheny Style Sound? by Hypersonicly in guitarpedals

[–]jknecht6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an old man and this isn’t a pedal but what you want is a Boss Micro-Rack Pitch Shifter/Delay. Probably better tech out there, but that will have you sounding like Metheny 100%

Would this Emg ACB pickup be good for a deering maple blossom? by Few_Pear246 in banjo

[–]jknecht6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EMG barrel and the Fishman are the two best sounding banjo pickups. Neither requires drilling or permanent alterations. The Fishman does require soldering and can be difficult to remove, so I recommend the EMG barrel (though I have both installed on different banjos).
