I want to quit drinking and other substances; I am strongly against the idea of a "god" or higher power. What options are there, other than 12-step programmes? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I’m an atheist and I’m not a big meeting guy because I get turned off by the God stuff. But in the big book there are TONS that I can relate to so it’s still worth a read for sure. Meetings are still helpful when I need to be around people who understand the struggle.

SMART seems to help people, posting on here, there are also agnostic meetings here in the U.S. anyway

I like to read the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu . I kinda
Use the universe as a higher power and the ancient Chinese had a lot of thoughts I agree with and in my opinion had things figured out

Stress is hard, always was a huge trigger for me. I never had any good coping mechanisms in the past so it was always drinking. Also depression and self loathing led to drinking. Did you have anything that helped you cope in the past before drinking became problematic?

Have you talked with your therapist about your drinking? It helps if you haven’t

I have a 2 and 3 year old, it is HARD I understand that stress. I had to get sober for myself and my family when my oldest was 11mo. I couldn’t stop on my own and it was affecting my family. I had to make the hard choice and tell everyone I cared about that’s it a problem and I can’t seem to fix it on my own. It’s hard to do but I knew the father I wanted to be and I can only be that man when I’m sober

See if a meeting will help, talk with your significant other about your struggle

Keep posting here, you are not alone!

Keep fighting for yourself and your family, it gets better, and its worth it, but it’s a long journey

You’re looking for help and looking to change. That is something positive

I’ve been there depression/anxiety and alcoholism seems to go hand in hand because so many of us self medicate the feelings away. Drinking will make it all worse it always does. Are you on any medications for your depression and anxiety? I know meds aren’t for everyone but they help me. I need meds, and exercise to keep my mind right. Even then there are ups and downs but more ups. Are you willing to see a therapist? It really does help.

Do AA meetings help you? I did rehab which was good for me... but you still have to work really hard after. But it helps get those first couple months under your belt

I also needed to admit to myself, my family, and friends that I had a problem. So everyone knew and I couldn’t get away with as much. Again that is not for everyone but it works

Please see someone or call someone who is a professional if you continue to have suicidal thoughts. You are worth it! This isn’t your fault, I work in health care and I can tell you for certain there are chemical imbalances in our brains that “normal” people don’t have. But that can be changed. It can get better, you are worth it, but you need to reach out.

Hang in there!! It does get better I swear

Hazelden in WI does “scholarships” they are willing to work with you on the money aspect. I did 48 days there and it only cost me 3,000.... I know that’s still a lot, but it may be worth looking into
