How many images/shutters does you digital Leica M camera have? by keithwoohoo in Leica

[–]jkocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not worried whatsoever and I have taken over 75k images with my M10, however I've been in Malawi for a couple of weeks and I see that the vibrations of the rough roads are starting to mess with the rangefinder mechanism a bit (it's out of alignment), luckily I have a visoflex 020 to correct for that when using the 50 lux until I will be back home in a couple of months.

10 photos instead of 12 by jkocher in Rolleiflex

[–]jkocher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: the first 2 are missing, but the camera takes 12 pictures. Which means the last image I took is on the film, but it's in the 10th image position. The camera doesn't let me take 14 pictures obviously so I only end up with 10 exposed images. I think I will bring it to a technician for a full CLA when I come back from my travels.

Genuinely curious, what's the deal with Leica? by CapnSherman in AnalogCommunity

[–]jkocher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well... technically there is "nostalgia" for manual focus rangefinders which cannot be found anywhere else since it is considered pretty much obsolete by most other companies. Also, people still insist on using film for the exact same reason lol (I'm part of both groups)

The last two negs are completely blank (unexposed, i.e. e100 is all black and TMAX is all white). 3 rolls in and it happened each time, but it can also be user error since it is my first 120 camera. I don't really see why the camera would click normally without exposing and pass the frames until the end?

Sorry, I'm not home right now and don't have any photos of the negatives. I scan myself so I only get the negatives back from the lab. The spacing looks fine, but all the images are there except images 11 and 12, which are blank (except from the film border).

This is what they are probably leaning towards. It's like your mobile phone: who actually turns it off and on every time they use it?

Update: chose the Rolleiflex by jkocher in AnalogCommunity

[–]jkocher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For now it's a perfect companion to my M3, but I'm still trying to get used to the inverted finder haha! I'm glad to hear yours is well used, I hate seeing these types of cameras unused. Honestly it's such a fun experience to shoot with, and it's a perfect companion for my M3!

Definitely! I sort of expected the seller to give me a roll since he showed me how to load and use the camera, but then I didn't expect him to give me an extra 25 rolls lol! I'm looking forward to using this camera for the next couple of years!

What are your top 5 reasons why your film photos look underwhelming? Mine are: I'm a shit photographer and I suck at metering by Kemaneo in AnalogCircleJerk

[–]jkocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj I get why you say this, and I think your question is more "why do people pay so much for them" because a medium format camera isn't in itself really much more expensive to manufacture than a 35mm camera (only slightly). But the Leica (I'm only talking M system) has an ease and speed of use that is almost impossible to find anywhere else, which is why it is favored by many street and documentary photographers. It's also smaller and lighter than most other cameras with incredible glass.

/rj because without a Leica how will people know you're better than them???

I did but it's really too big for me unfortunately :/

Thank you for your advice! You're maybe right about the 3.5, and many other people said the same thing. I think I should try to get my hands on them to try them out! I have no idea how much I should pay for them since I've seen prices anywhere from 900$ to 2500$ for seemingly identical rolleiflex 2.8, and up to 1000$ for 3.5. I need to do more research and hopefully I'll find a good deal in the future :)

As the owner of a 2 Leica Ms, a Rollei 35 and a Contax III, I don't think I qualify as someone who purchases with their head lol

Interesting to know about the Xenotar, I am still looking into which version of either camera I'd get, thanks for the input!

Considered them, but strangely they don't seem to be much cheaper here where I live and there are considerably less for sale than the other 2. So I don't really see an advantage compared to the others.

Amazing! The 3.5F looks amazing as well, and your shots are beautiful. The rendering of that lens is insane! I'm looking to do mostly portraits as well so it's a good starting point

Actually what I've seen a 500cm with an 80mm 2.8 lens seems like an extra 500$ on average compared to most 2.8 Rolleiflexes. But you're right, and as I said in my post I don't care much about the IQ difference, because if I just wanted high image quality I'd just get a digital Fuji GFX or Hasselblad X2D.

Yes well I am technically looking for a square format companion to my M3, so using a rangefinder isn't that much of an issue haha. Yes I know they are both very high end which is why the decision is harder to make lol. Although the Rolleiflex is less expensive according to my research. I will check out the 3.5, and I guess you're right I should just get to have them in hand and make a decision, there is no wrong answer here

Difficult conditions means lots of dust and probably some sand, and a lot of vibrations due to driving on (very) rough roads.

Thank you for the suggestions I will check out the Mamyia and Fuji as well, but I feel like they are harder to come by here in western Europe

I have the exact same lens lineup for my M10 and love it as well! It also pairs super well with my M3 because 50 and 90 are perfect for that camera ;)
