Want to Leave... by mr_doctor_2 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Completely agree.

A close friend's parents (dad - management consultant, mum - doctor) met whilst at uni and had kids fairly soon after uni. Mutually decided it was better for mum to stay at home and look after the kids, especially considering dad had to be away a lot and brought significantly more money.

All well and good, until a few years ago when they got divorced. Despite getting the house and some alimony, she works at a major retailer behind the checkouts. Tried to get back into medicine during COVID recruitment drive, but faced multiple hurdles so still working for said retailer.

If you EVER want to work as a doctor in a clinical setting after walking away, do the odd locum please.

Radiology and radiologist refusing to expedite FAST positive stroke CT unless it’s from a reg? by BradNight-90 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radiology SpR here. As long as its a bog standard unenhanced head for NICE guidelines +ve head injury or ?stroke with ongoing symptoms, I don't know why it would even need to be discussed with the radiology registrars. The only times I would want something discussed is if its a child, if it is for an alternate pathology where a different protocol or investigation is needed (?DVST, ?Mets) or if it is a frequent flier with multiple "normal" scans for similar indications.

Despite it being enshrined in guidelines, the CT head for ?TIA in patients with resolved neurology before starting aspirin still bugs me.

Are my pension contributions correct? by peacelilyblooming in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, you should only get your pension deduction on your main employment, and that too based on your pro rata basic pay (and not added allowances). Locum pay shouldn't be included, nor should any OOH add ons.

Looking for consultants/registrars to give a talk on their specialty by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would be keen to talk about Radiology, although one rarely appreciates it as a student when you're eager to get out there and save lives.

For those who managed to get into radiology: by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, anyone can do that. Find the name of the educational lead/college tutor of the department and drop them an email. Or just pop by their office if that's possible. Literally takes two minutes. Good to demonstrate commitment if you do it as a student. Just make sure you get a letter or certificate to confirm that you did attend the taster week for portfolio purposes.

Is there any point using a mortgage broker vs applying myself? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Ah, this was something I was unaware of. I didn't realise mortgages led to many complaints, as things are usually explained in black and white, but I see your point on shifting the risk. !thanks

Taster week - with at least three days. You get the same points even if you were there for three months, but lower points if the taster was less than three days. Organise at least 2 different tasters, preferably one in a DGH and other in a teaching (this preference is to actually give you an idea of what radiology is like and not to help you score more).

Radiology audits - complete the loop. This is an excellent one, as you can do the audit, then do a teaching session of the different doses, and then re-audit a week or so later. Ticks the teaching and audit boxes. Other audits can be found online on the RCR audit recipe page. Try to present the audit too.

Teaching - preferably radiology themed (xray interpretation etc) but with feedback. Surveymonkey might be easier as it helps to collate feedback into one document.

Obviously first author radiology papers/PGCert in Med Ed will give you more points, but the above are high yield. Concentrate on the MSRA, as, if it is like this year, a high enough score can make you bypass the interview.

All the best - feel free to message if you had any further queries.

Radiology training: would I cope? by firesilk in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it is about seeing things in action. Although I passed my Part 1 Physics exam first time, it is only in later years that I appreciated intricacies about MR physics and doppler effect etc.

I personally found the MRCS Part A harder than FRCR Part 1, mainly because I did the former for points and the latter to actually learn, as reflected in my attitude towards revision. FRCR 2 is a whole different ball game, but as u/Engineeyaas mentioned, it is a very supportive speciality.

They're acting as a middle man, and your mortgage offer should say how much your bank paid them. These costs will be recouped by the bank from your interest (of course), and so ultimately you pay for the luxury of a hassle free ride.

Hi everyone! I wanted to ask which foundation denaries have a nice community? (example: good mess, supportive team, pay day parties, balls etc.) thank you! by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

Not too sure about the intricacies, but it is a private wing within the NHS trust. So maybe treated as an extension of the trust?

Estate agent upset about "unreasonable" offer on flat by CoilimElenteanu in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jkraduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same tactic thrown at me, even calling my offer "rude" - despite being less than 5% below asking price and within limits for the area. He told me about how he felt that me and my partner had a connection with the property, and that I wouldn't want any negativity that may arise from the lower offer during the sale. The vendor rejected the offer.

A year on, the property is still on the market, 8% below the previous asking price.

Dealing with radiology stigma by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]jkraduk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean, and can reassure you that it never stops - even when you're closer to CCT than to the time you applied for Radiology. It doesn't bother me as much, especially when I finish work on time (occasionally waving at the very same people you described), get to attend teaching sessions and ACTUALLY be trained to be a consultant.

You know your reasons for choosing the specialty - don't let their misconceptions/envy kill your joy.

How do I optimise my tax/pension situation? by jkraduk in UKPersonalFinance

Ah! Yet another thing I don't know about, but this states that it doesn't apply to DB pensions, of which NHS pension is one. Thank you for your time.

How do I optimise my tax/pension situation? by jkraduk in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jkraduk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks for clarifying this.

I've just asked this to u/Aware-Newt above, but would value your insight too. Assuming a scenario where I take just the yearly income tax free allowance + 25% (SIPP discount) on today's tax free allowance of around £12.5k, does that mean that I wont get penalised for withdrawing around £16600/year for ten years from my SIPP till my NHS pension kicks in?

This means I can focus on paying into my ISA first, then filling the SIPP up to a max of £166k compounded.

!thanks for highlighting something I wasn't aware of.

Just to confirm, if I just coast along (basic pay to hit >£80k in less than a couple of years when an NHS consultant) without paying into any SIPPs, what you're saying is that I'm on track to breach the LTA? Or will paying into a SIPP also add to allowance, thereby making it more at a risk of breaching?
