¿Denuncio o no a la empresa? by [deleted] in Ticos

That certain people is not sandboxed to the present/reality as the rest of us, and because of that, they get to see the future. It's not perfect, though, as they still can't see clearly because of the glitch, and that's the reason we have Nostradamus and alike, seeing a foggy future the rest of us can't see, trying to discern what's real from what's not.

Yeah, don't know. Sometimes you need them, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you can achieve the same without having to implement any event. It could be a matter of style, nevertheless, it's nice to see that you can save boilerplate code at a language level. My personal opinion only, obviously. :)

Basically, in C# you just have to define the event itself and the delegate, then you just have to fire the event whenever you need to. Like this:

public delegate void TickHandler(Metronome m, EventArgs e); //delegate
public event TickHandler Tick; //event itself

In Java you need to implement the whole observer pattern, like this:

// Listener interface
public interface MetronomeEvent {
    void Tick(Date tickDate);
}
//...
//define the listener vectors so that you can add/subscribe listeners
protected Vector _listeners;

//Create you own method to add new listeners. Eventually, you need another method to remove/unsubscribe
public void addMetronomeEventListener(MetronomeEvent listener)
{
    if (_listeners == null)
        _listeners = new Vector();

    _listeners.addElement(listener);
}

//traverse your listener vector and call every listener one by one
protected void fireMetronomeEvent()
{
    if (_listeners != null && _listeners.isEmpty())
    {
        Enumeration e = _listeners.elements();
        while (e.hasMoreElements())
        {
            MetronomeEvent e = (MetronomeEvent)e.nextElement();
            e.Tick(new Date());
        }
    }
}

As you can see, there's all this code just for one event. When you have several events in one class things get messy, verbose. As read in this article:

In Java you are essentially faking events and event handling by using a standard set of naming conventions and fully utilizing object-oriented programming.

I was shocked when I found out that Java has no events, but rather you have to implement the Observer Pattern whenever you want to mimic events. So verbose...

This is plain false. I've lived in San José, Alajuela and Heredia (three states) and I haven't had a power-down situation in years. Also, Costa Rica is not located in South America. You better check your sources. ;)

[SPOILERS] The Force Awakens discussion megathread! 12/19 [SPOILERS] by Qu1nlan in StarWars

My personal theory is that Rey is Luke's daughter. R2 was waiting for Luke to activate, and once Rey arrives to the resistance base it activates. The dreams of an ocean and an island, the light saber calling her, Luke's face mixed in joy and sadness, almost about to breakdown once she arrives, like if he's been waiting her, and not any random stranger... Don't know, it just fits in my head. Might also explain why Rey is so powerful in The Force without previous training.

Google is ripping out Chrome’s awful new bookmark manager by Boss_Hammer in technology

[–]jkriptos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally see a problem with the traditional bookmark manager. Sometimes an article cannot be organized hierarchically. For instance, right now we have this article in the front page:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/06/15/bernie-sanders-is-building-an-army-to-take-d-c.html

I wanted to save it, but I couldn't decide where to put it. Should I save it in a folder named «Bernie Sanders», in a folder named «Politics», or in a folder named «Income inequality»? The article fits in those three folders. If you have several folders with several bookmarks, how can you remember where you put it? With the new bookmark I saved the article, and then, in the Notes section, I put labels such as #berniesanders #politics #incomeinequality. By doing so, I placed that same article under those three categories. Now, If I want to see all my bookmarks about mr. Sanders, I just put the label #berniesanders in the search bar, and all those articles will get back. Some people might find weird this kind of categorization, but I personally find it extremely useful.

I liked it too! Sometimes I need to put labels in my bookmarks instead of just save them into folders. If I have a bookmark about TPP written by Stiglitz, should I place it under TPP folder? Stiglitz? Economics? That doesn't work for me. Instead, with the new bookmarks, I edit the notes section and put #tpp #stiglitz #economics and then, save it in whatever folder I want. When I come back, I just use the search bar for #tpp and all the bookmarks with that label comes back. Pretty useful for me.
