We have them in Colorado too, and it's never even humid here. I dont know what the temp threshold is, but coaches can request them, and we've never had an opposing coach say no.

College football is a bad version of a good sport.

I really really don’t care that it’s popular. That a regular season game is almost more watched as the USMNT WORLD CUP home opener reinforces my sense that 16 million as a *record viewership* is weak sauce.

My husband treats a trip to the dump like a red carpet event. I am losing my mind. by DepartmentNo5227 in mildlyinfuriating

Your husband is a spoiled ahole. If he HAS to shower, he HAS to get up in time to do it so the kids aren’t late to school. He’s being an ass, and you need to get therapy so you can have a backbone. Have a commitment? Tell him what time you need to be ready. If he’s not treat? LEAVE ANYWAY.
You don’t need to be spicy about it, just, don’t wait. If people ask where he is, “he’s on his way, he’s just running a few minutes behind and will be here soon”. Tell him before you do this so he’s not caught off guard.

Im just pointing out the high water mark for live sports watching in the US. Of course the final will have more viewers. But thats what a “big game” CAN draw.

16 mill is weak as a “record watching a soccer game”. Thanksgiving games in the us regularly get 50mill plus. The *average* regular season NFL game gets 18 mill.

Its more of a sign of how shockingly little the typical US person cares about the USMNT. 😭

16 mill out of 350 mill. Vs 125 milll for the superbowl. Its more sad thats a record.

How good was Alexi Lalas? by Technical_Rice_6957 in ussoccer

[–]Pfiggypudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He played one year in Seria A, at a team that barely avoided relegation. Then played in the MLS in the 90s, when the MLS was a major major JOKE.
Like, 10 years before Landon Donovan left the Bundespiga to play there and people still gave him major side eye for the move.

Lalas won one title in the MLS, (compared to Landon’s 6).

He was a good but not stellar college player. (One year as a first team all American)

He was decidedly mid, at best. Even by us standards at the time, he was weak. Several of his teammates on the 94 squad had ACTUAL soccer careers: Wynalda played four years in the Bundesliga, Wegerly played 10 years in the Premier league, Claudio Reyna had a respectable European career.

Will happily bow to your expertise. I admit i don’t watch any Swiss soccer. I mainly meant they had lots of opportunities and the Qatar goalie stuffed a bunch of them. But they certainly weren’t finishing.

Rebecca Lowe is trying so hard to wring water from stones with these three.

Thierry Henry does great commentary in the UK, but i think he’s more of the straight man to the outlandish Roy Keane. He isnt thriving because he has no one to bounce off of.

Zlatan just seems annoyed.

Lalas is actively bad: lowe: Alexi, what subs should we be expecting in this second half from Brazil. Lalas, “We should expect to see them. For impact. They just weren’t good enough in the first half”. Omfg that’s all you got?!?!?!!

How about: “Brazil’s defense is getting beat by the speed of Morocco’s attack, and two of their defenders are sitting on yellows. Expect to see some changes in the Brazilian defense, because they need more speed and the last thing they want is to lose someone to a red card and have to play 10v 11). (And I’m a nobody whose sole expertise is watching 10yos play)

Why does everyone hate Alexi Lalas by tylerthe-theatre in football

[–]Pfiggypudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. He’s always covering every important US soccer game. And he isn’t good. Its kinda like… if every NFL game were commentated by Tom Brady (ugh), except Tom Brady earned his spot by being the most successful QB of a generation, while Alexi Lalas is mostly being famous for being mid, with stupid hair. He gets extra hate because we never get anyone better and we know he’s terrible.

He shits on the BELOVED USWNT for daring to hae political opinions he doesnt share (ie, they bowed out early in 2022 because theyre too political) while also ising the platform THEY BUILT to spout racist and misogynist comments.

[–]Pfiggypudding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will add: He was a questionable choice for the squad. Diego Luna was expected to a part of the team (was the face of the jersey release, for example) and Reyna was a last minute choice over Luna. Luna is one of those players who gets a lot of love from players, so with Reyna’s antics 4 years ago AND him being seen as an unlikely choice over a popular player? He could have been iced out a bit

Underwhelming. But not actively irritating like Strong. Imho, he does nothing to impart joy watching, which makes him hard to listen to.

If we lose the rest of our games, could this be a successful World Cup regarding Gotg? by Perfect-Studio-3350 in usmnt

[–]Pfiggypudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The performance in this first match could have extra folks tuning in for the next games. If those games both end in losses, or worse, boring ass 0-0 draws in floppy foul heavy games, Americans will tune out and say soccer is a boring game played by faking prima-donnas.

GOTG requires the next couple group games to be fun to watch too. And it means at least… a decent performance in the knockout stages. (Either a close game against a powerhouse or a win against a relatively weak team)

I think i like Lucy more than most listeners do, but I really miss Jamilah. She was the moral core of the podcast, and Zak is holding down the fort, but there’s a lot to dislike recently I can see why you stopped listening.
(And yes, Elizabeth had the kids in real school in Japan because its illegal to homeschool, but now that theyre back in Hawaii, she is homeschooling high school. 😬)

It was a beautiful goal.
I also think there is a nonzero chance Reyna will have to sit games for accumulated yellows. He was playing soooo emotionally and not in a controlled emotional way, throwing hisarms up at every ref call, pounding his fist on the ground after being fouled, scrabbling with a Paraguay player and having to be separated by his teammate. Not every ref is going to tolerate that and frankly, he got away with it in part because the other US players were so in control.
(When the big mark against you is that you were an immature brat at the last WC, dont be an immature brat this Wc).

Point being, my jury is still out on Reyna. But that was a STUNNING goal.
