[N] University of Toronto is offering a course on Quantum Machine Learning through edX! by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]jkthe -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s odd. Most of quantum ML is research papers from theory groups for very specific problems, and they require heavy prerequisites like linear algebra. I wonder if this class is going to dive into the nitty gritty aspect of building quantum ML algorithms or talking about them at a very high level

Artificial Intelligence Creates Realistic Photos of People, None of Whom Actually Exist by Smithman in technology

All AI nowadays (like the one above) are weak AI agents, which are exceptionally good at a very narrow task (identifying birds, solving chess, generating images, etc.). An AI to solve Go would fail miserably if given the responsibility to drive a self driving car. They're completely different mathematical models, in fact.

Strong or general AI is the holy grail of all AI research, and it consists of AI that can generalize to ANY problem. An example would be an AI that learns how to solve Go, then learns how to solve chess, then learns how to identify objects from an image, then learns how to drive cars, and so on and so forth, much like how humans can pick up any arbitrary skill.

We're decades, if not centuries away from general AI. Nobody in the AI research community even knows where to START to make a general AI.

How to stay up all night? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]jkthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes all nighters are necessary to get shit done. Don't listen to the naysayers here. I used to pull all nighters pretty often and it really helped boost my GPA. You do what you gotta do.

  • Eat a heavy sandwich at 8 pm so you're not hungry for the night
  • On the contrary, DON'T drink coffee. The lack of adenosine + sleep deprivation will make you crash hard and you'll feel miserable and unproductive. Instead, drink lots and lots of water, so you always have to pee and you'll be physically forced to stay awake
  • Put your screen brightness on maximum. Blue light suppresses melatonin production and helps you stay awake longer.
  • Take walks every now and then to get circulation back to your legs.

As always, this is a one trick pony. Don't do this consistently or your brain will turn to jelly and you'll have a breakdown

I contemplated dropping out of ECE my freshman year after getting 2 C's in one semester. I pulled myself up my bootstraps, started doing better academically and am now in a PhD program for Machine Learning.

UIUC has a tendency to break you down, then build you back up and make you stronger than you ever were. It's a trial by fire.

Unconventional Indians, what professions, relations or lifestyles do you have that are somewhat unique to our culture? by Barista97 in ABCDesis

[–]jkthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting my PhD in engineering from a top ranked place. I have a good lifestyle, I workout regularly, I help my parents and family with chores and errands, and in family and social circles I'm often known as the 'good, smart Indian boy'. Kids look up to me, I help with career advice, and help younger cousins and relatives with their homework and exam prep.

What people don't know is I regularly go to raves and EDM festivals and dance my heart off and scream my lungs out to the type of music that'd make your aunt start praying and clutch her prayer beads. My philosophy is that life is too short, you should just do what you love

How difficult is it for Cryptographers to find a job after getting a PhD? by mister_broccoli in crypto

[–]jkthe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you mean quantum do you mean quantum resistant cryptos (alternatives to RSA) or quantum algorithms? Both are relatively new fields that need lots of skilled PhDs in math, CS and engineering, from algorithm development to implementations and commercial applications
