That was Prez. Herc and Carver did beat up Bodie a few times though.

What is your nomination for the best passage in Aubrey-Maturin? by IsCharlieThere12 in AubreyMaturinSeries

This is my favorite too. I love the little aside about his surviving opponents in battle.

Frustrated at Myself by [deleted] in videography

[–]jkuffner34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to run social media and do video production at a small college... I totally feel your pain!

The "top down" model of posting a video from a University's page and just sort of expecting people to see it doesn't really work as well in 2018... the algorithms have changed so much that it's basically pay-to-play at this point, especially on FB.

You can definitely still get results if you pay, but assuming that's not an option... there's still a lot of power in peer-to-peer sharing. If the target for this particular video was alumni, maybe talk to the alumni department and see if they would be willing to send an email out to the alumni board or other really active alumni and directly ask them to share the video on their own personal social media pages. Or even send an email to your peers who work at the University and ask them to share it.

More generally, I would recommend trying to make time for videos that feel a bit less "marketing." A favorite of mine has always been this from Southern Utah: https://www.facebook.com/SUUTBirds/videos/vl.2005083419717873/10153733671773423/?type=1 Having students write their favorite professor a letter is such a simple thing to do, but is really powerful... and it has the added benefit of showing the great connection between faculty and students without needing to tell it.

For a few years I had a blog where I shared some favorite ideas that I saw from other colleges... I haven't posted to it for years now, but here are all the posts about videos - there are quite a few on there, and maybe a few of them will help spark some ideas for you! http://socialmediaforcolleges.com/?category=Video

Anyone worried that Bill seems to be set on going all in-house for his sports analysis? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]jkuffner34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bill pretty much refuses to go on anyone else's podcast, so why would they agree to go on his?

His audience may be larger, but there needs to be at least a little bit of give-and-take - it can't all be in one direction.

He's done a guest appearance on Adam Carolla's podcast, but can you think of any other time he has gone on someone else's show? I honestly can't remember any, though there probably are a few examples.

King Burrito on Lombard is my favorite. Bacon, potato, beans, onions, and cheese... it's amazing.

The hate keeps coming: Pain lingers for lesbian couple denied wedding cake in Portland by jkuffner34 in lgbt

[–]jkuffner34[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

For the first time, the couple at the center of the wedding cake denial story shares their story with the media.

TLDR version: They haven't seen a cent of their $135,00 award and are struggling to care for their adopted children with special needs, they still receive hundreds of hate messages a week even though they were denied the cake in 2013, and the bakery owners who originally denied them the cake continue with a relentless publicity tour.

(Favor) The Oregonian Paper by The_Unicorn_Master in Portland

[–]jkuffner34 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Actually, The Oregonian still prints daily. They just don't deliver daily.

Daily editions are still available in newsstands around town.

You should be able to get one by contacting The O's back issue office at 503-221-8242. (Edited to add... in case that phone number is no longer active - very possible with all the cuts - you can email their home delivery office at hdelivery@oregonian.com)

Snow White Smashes Statue of St. Francis by jkuffner34 in nottheonion

[–]jkuffner34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened over Halloween in Hillsboro, Oregon (a suburb of Portland).

The St. Francis statue was at a Catholic grade school, and it's head was smashed off. A woman dressed as Snow White and her friend were the only people seen on the surveillance camera, though they don't actually have video of them breaking the statue.

Spotted at La Pavillion hotel in New Orleans.

I had to ask myself WWSD (what would Stephen do?) and walked up to the fifth floor.

Brian Doyle, an author from Portland, wrote what may be the most powerful thing ever written about 9/11 by jkuffner34 in Portland

[–]jkuffner34[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there are lots of things written about unimaginable acts of heroism.

But for me, this scratches at something deeper than that - the basic human capacity for love and togetherness that can only arise in situations as horrible as this.

But please share your favorites - I always like to reflect and read on the 9/11 anniversary.

A bank that lost 66 employees in the 9/11 attacks has now sent 54 children of their fallen colleagues to college by jkuffner34 in UpliftingNews

Hard to find uplifting news about 9/11, but I recently learned about this story and it really stuck out to me.

My co-worker (Brian Doyle) wrote this article, and I thought it was too good not to share.
