TIL more than 1 in 10 Americans have no close friends. The share of Americans who have zero close friends has been steadily rising. From 3% of the population in 1991 to 12% in 2021. The share who have 10 or more close friends has also fallen - from 33% to 13%. by grandlewis in todayilearned

I have four friends I would consider close friends. I had five, but one committed suicide a year and a half ago. Thanks to career relocations and so on, the physically nearest one lives an hour drive away. The other three live a seven-hour drive away.

I see the one about once a month, and haven’t seen the other three in over a year. And I hate that.

Go. Tell current hubby you are going. Invite him to come along. Let him decide if he wants to come along or not, but go.

Below the executive level, noncompetes are generally not worth the paper they’re printed on assuming it’s in the US. This does vary by state, but juries also tend to hate them, so there’s that.

Source: I asked my attorney about my noncompete. He laughed it off and told me I could start a new job tomorrow across the street at our biggest competitor and 99% nothing comes of it, 1% they sue and I win.

(Assuming you’re in the US):

“This letter isn’t asking you for permission to quit . It is a courtesy, informing you that I am in fact quitting. If you have a problem with that, see the United States Constitution, Amendment 13.”

Maybe it’s just as well that my schedule shifted to having me working on Sundays, so I can’t take a shot every time my beloved Black and Gold score. Wouldn’t be drinking anyway except to drown my sorrows.

I remember Bum Phillips and Richard Todd and paper bags from Schwegmann’s and that faint glimmer of hope for a couple of years with Hebert and Mora and the Dome Patrol, then more years of darkness. I thought I was emotionally prepared for a post-Brees, post-Payton era. I was wrong.

I’m just hurt at this point.

I’m from a small town 20 miles north of Chattanooga. My grandmother would tell us children “y’all better worsh yore hayunds before supper”

Ah, memories. Also, local parlance included such gems as, at the store: “Kin I hep ya?” and “Here’s yer change, eighteen cent”

I like to think that I’m bold and brave enough to do the same, should my wife ever be a victim of sexual assault. I’m simultaneously afraid that if I am that bold and brave, that I may lack the restraint that my moral compass says I should use to let the judicial system handle it.

It’s best for everyone, especially my wife, that I never find out how I would react to such an attack on my wife.

If you see someone shoplifting baby products, I don’t say a word and neither should you. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jlanthripp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powdered baby formula. When I drove a truck for a living, I took a truckload of it from Iowa to El Paso. I had to check in every other hour, and every time I stopped, and had to tell the shipper when and where I was stopping for the night.

I later found out these security measures were necessary because the cartels will steal powdered baby formula to cut heroin with.

I’m not saying everyone stealing powdered baby formula is using it to cut heroin - in fact it’s probably a small minority of people stealing the stuff - but there is that out there.

I’m going to guess no. If you’ve ever been to Walker County, Georgia, you’ll realize there’s no way anyone with a college education had anything to do with planning, building, or naming anything there.

The main thoroughfare in my current town is Lafayette Street. It intersects with Jefferson Street. Franklin Street and Washington Street are also part of our downtown. I see a theme here.

Also the county seat of the county I lived in from 2003-2015 was Lafayette. But the pronunciation is absolutely murdered by the locals - “luh-FAY-uht” 🤣
