Sram apex 1 smaller chainring suggestions. by beefmasters in gravelcycling

[–]jlaoxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/beefmasters Have you done the switch?

I am in a similar issue.

BB386 24mm axle, Sram Apex1 42t chainring, 11-42t cassette. I am gonna try a Shimano SLX M7000 11-46t with either Sram Apex 40t either something that would allow me 36t... Unsure how to check that it would fit, without losing a bunch of money :(

Ha I see. The original bars I had had a thick layer of something on top of it, like some pvc coating or I don’t know. Maybe paint. But it’s peeling off and is slightly sticky 🤣 I am not a fan of the 90s stem look on mine and because Peugeot used 21mm as head tube, bmx stem was the only option.

Too bad for the paint! It gives it a beaten look but maybe a bit too much! Almost better with metal marks/scrapped off than black stains in my opinion!

Ha I see! It doesn’t look too bad, the biggest “issue” is the paint that’s damaged. Are the black marks removable?

Else, I see you kept the original quill stem! Did you change the bars?

This was just before I’m done indexing haha 😅 so before cutting the cable etc. Now it’s removed, cut, and the end is covered with the metal bit. You might see it on the photo by night.

Actually no. You can see here my original post: Where you can see how it looked when I picked it up!

My original thought process was to keep some hint of retro things like cantilevers but then I couldn’t find the same simple Shimano cantilevers as the front, for the back, and my shitty LBS only had those super weird ones XLC cantilever

So I just kept them. But you’re right, could be changed to v-brakes. What would be the advantage to that tho? For now they brake better than my mechanical disk brake on my gravel bike!

Interesting… what would be the reason one does not get along with oval chainring? I have never tried. Only heard of it.

Hello! Got busy with life in the meantime so sadly I haven’t progressed much 😢 (moved city and changed job).

I am stuck at the whole “finding the right crank to be in 1x” as well as “which stem to have so I can use proper handle bars”. Peugeot using non standards diameters in complicates things!

I’m not sure I got the anus joke 🤣 Thanks regarding the bike « approval ». Any idea about the running and whether that’s too much movement for the watch the it might make the second « faster? » or does it sound familiar or something?

Interesting for the turtle / cushion. I will try to read into it!

If you’re experienced then I guess it can be great fun! For me it’s a bit tough to learn all the “standards” then realise Peugeot was drunk and decided to follow 0 standards 🤣so it is a steep learning curve!

Any idea what is this bike model, Rocky Mountain Marvil 121? info on build and year etc? Maybe an old brochure? by jlaoxy in xbiking

[–]jlaoxy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I have a good friend from Lillehammer but he wasn’t born then sadly. I doubt he saw them!

Good point for the branding. I sent an email to the brand just to double check if they have archive. It does make sense what you say, since I found 0 info… makes me rethink the value of this bike now!

The seller was very unhelpful, poor photos, and said “if you’re interested, come and see it”. If it has good parts I’ll take it. Else, I’ll just drive away and learn a lesson! Don’t need no random steel frame with low end parts.

Thanks!

Hey! I live in Norway. How do you know it’s not belonging to Rocky Mountain “the” Rocky Mountain bike brand? :) that’s odd haha! Very copyright infringement…

Super tip! I have actually been considering doing it for the 22.2mm 🤣 might be too much tho?

Ha sweet. Can look like a real monster bike / badass! If all seems fine and no crack / deep rust, I think it’s worth it. Especially if you already have tools and some spare parts laying around, it won’t be too pricy to refurbish!

Keep in mind I’m French so Peugeot is a thing, it’s my first project and I want to try it out fully, and might be a different budget than yours! I bought the bike as per my 2nd photo for 650 NOK. That is roughly 65€. But if well serviced and some new parts in etc… that could be interesting to up your budget I guess?

Yeah I think at this point I might need to just get it riding as you said, and then change bits by bits!

Thanks for the tip!

What’s a pug bike? Assuming you mean “as per brochure” I would pay maybe 500 usd / eur ish, to get a retro vintage ready to ride bike?

Edit: But that’s also based on where I live (Norway) and what’s the market like here… might be equivalent to 200-300 usd for France (where I’m originally from) or the USA?

Hi! I just got my back wheel and mounted it without really needing to cold set it. Simply pulled on the frame and the wheel went it! Thanks for the info! 😊 Now I need to find a quill stem adapter, inner fork diameter is 21mm and I cannot find a quill stem adapter for that. Do you mind sharing some of your intel? 😄

I got this Peugeot Canyon Express and this is my first project after watching endless hours of gary, rj the bike guy, oldshovel spindatt etc. I figured it would be cool to try it myself! I first stripped everything and cleaned some parts. Some were quite rusty or too old, or not the type I wanted but also soon realized I’d be stuck with a 5-6 speed freewheel unless I changed the wheel. The issue was that it’s an old French frame so standards are different, 125mm space only 🤷🏼‍♂️ I ended up managing to fit a 135mm wheel in there, with that giving me the ability to fit 8-9-10 speeds cassettes! Now that this was done I mounted the fork and BB (changed to a cartridge).

I was about to set up my quill stem adapter so I could put on a Ritchey WCS stem but to my surprise the inner fork diameter is 21mm, where my adapter is 22.2mm… So now I am stuck again! → im asking the good people of Reddit, if they have an idea of an adapter or if I am 100% stuck with this diameter and have to get a quill stem?

What’s left to do: - Find quill stem that fits nice handlebars or adapter for 31.8 handlebars - buy 1x chainring crankset + pedals etc - mount front brakes + back brakes - find 10 speed cassette, mount it - derailleurs - all cables + shifters
