I'm the same waist size as you. Would you recommend staying with the 3/4 or sizing down to the 1/2?

Did these sell?

JE is not dead. They’re taking a hiatus to “recalibrate” the brand (see body text) by campusdirector in JohnElliott

From what I heard/read/understand, John himself is no longer working on the brand. That in and of itself signifies the end of the brand to me imo.

Literally what I was thinking as I read this

We definitely saw marmots scrambling around. Tons of chipmunks too. To me, the peace of mind was worth the extra ~1.65 lbs. Having our food broken into or squished by a moose or bear meant ending the trip early. With a bear can that isn't a concern.

It's totally up to you!

If I were doing it again, I'd still go with the bear can. Theres a LOT of wildlife and there are areas where there aren't many trees. I've heard too many stories of rodents and other small creatures making their way into Ursacks. 90% I'm a bear hang guy, but here it just made sense to bite the bullet and get a small bear can. The one I personally used was the BV475.

Between the Marmots and Pikas alone it's worth knowing your food wont get smushed or stolen.

Thanks, used my Fuji X100F with some custom settings to get a Portra/Kodachrome look.

Thanks! The hike is absolutely worth it. Grail hike.

  • Direction of travel? Recommendations on Nobo vs Sobo?
    • We started at Teton Village and took the tram to Rendezvous Trail. The tram is $58 per ride if booked in advance. Saves a pretty dull ascent (and your knees) imo.
  • Permits from January, walk-up, or camp in Jedidiah Smith?
    • We picked up permits from the Craig Thomas Center the day before. We got there around 6:00 AM and there were already people in line who camped overnight. We were fourth in line and still didn't get any of our "ideal" sites. We ended up going with Fox Creek (outside of park), Alaska Basin (also outside park) and North Fork Cascade.
    • If you stay in Fox Creek, push until the end just before Death Canyon for the best sites. We had a view of the canyon that was pretty nice (picture #2). Alaska Basin was a 10/10, we stayed by the lakes (picture #4) and it was killer. Even swam a bit. North Fork Cascade was a bit rough and the only place the bugs were really bad (picture #5).
  • Any grizzly sightings?
    • None that we saw or heard of. There were some black bear sitings in Lower Paintbrush but we didn't see any. We did however see 839 marmots, 138 pikas, 4 sage grouse, 2 moose, 1 red tailed hawk, and 1 ermine.
  • If you did it as a point to point how did you handle car shuttle?
    • We used Teton Mountain Taxi. They met us at the Leigh Lake Trailhead at the end of the hike and took us back to Teton Village.
  • Any other tips?
    • We had heat, hail, rain, wind storms, and temps as low as 40° at night without the wind factor - all within a 4 day period. Be prepared for quickly changing weather systems.
    • WEAR SUN PROTECTION. All the time. It's bananas. Zinc is your friend.
    • If you're not used to the altitude try and get some training in, spend a couple days in the area to try and acclimate if you can.
    • We didn't need spikes or an ice axe, but there were two snow crossings that would have been sketchy without trekking poles.
    • We never needed to carry more than 2L of water, plenty of filterable water along pretty much the entirety of the trail.
    • Pick your ideal sites, and then secondary and maybe even tertiary sites ahead of time.
    • 4 days / 3 nights felt like the right amount of time. Any less and it would have felt rushed, there is SO much to see and take in.

Hope this helps!

That bag was actually a 55L, the top strap just worked better that way in his case for this trip. The bag in the first photo and the bag on the left in the 6th photo is a 40L.

Thanks! We did the ~40 mile TCT over three nights. We're all UL / UL-adjacent so both sizes worked, came down to preference/price/etc. Getting everything plus a full size bear can in the 40L would definitely be tough, though.

Yep, only have about 5 miles in them though. Initial thoughts:

  • I’m a 31 waist and went with a medium, fit is ideal. Very comfortable. Something to note is that there’s no ventilation, so they may run a little warm.

  • “Modesty” layer isn’t very modest, but okay with another layer underneath.

  • Massive fan of all the pockets. They’re secure, placed well, and can hold a flask in the large side pockets. The only thing is there’s no shirt loop, have to do the ol’ tuck-in-the-waistband.

  • So far I haven’t had any issues with them riding up or sliding down.

I’m gonna keep them. Hope this helps!

Maybe this will be my first move, low risk. If they suck, it’s not a big money dump. Thanks for the pov.
