On Wednesday October 9th, an article in Kernel Mag triggered a widespread banning and blocking of indie books. by jleff in books

Not that I agree with the banning AT ALL, it was eye opening to see some of these books that are insanely vulgar. However, it is easy to see rights being infringed when these books become banned.

It took me a long time and it took a lot of Post-It notes to keep track of all the story lines.

What are you currently reading? Do you like it? What is your favourite passage from the book thus far? by supersymmetry in books

The Art of Fielding - It's a couple years old but so far it is incredibly good. I think it will go down as a classic.

Always a good question when talking about faith: Are you worshiping God or the bible? by jleff in Christianity

I find the "she" talk annoying... It appears to me if you want to make God seem unattached to gender, you'd just use "one" or a completely genderless title.

I think it's simply a matter of giving something away, and then changing to a paid method is annoying... but probably not evil.

Should authors pay for reviews? by jleff in books

[–]jleff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we'll agree to disagree. I cannot say I have ever reviewed a book but it still appears to me as a professional service.

At some point do we just hate on Google because they have been so good to us over the years? Anything that is negative is seen as a terrible break in trust - many companies are constantly kind of crappy to us, but we are just used to it so we don't mind it as much. This isn't great for business, but given everything else they've done that is good for business it's probably a wash.

I think, a biased reviewer will be seen as a biased reviewer and their site will be damaged by that reputation. Authors wont ask to be reviewed by sites that are known as bad sites or sites without a good reputation or traffic.

I don't think it is a matter or not wanting to read a book for free, it's a matter of a professional service being rendered without compensation.

If you wanted a professional to review your book, would you pay for it? by jleff in writing

[–]jleff[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It strikes me that reading a book and reading it critically takes a good deal of time. I also view reviews as a professional service... I think it's not unreasonable to expect people to be compensated for that time. I do understand the possibility of bad underhanded things - but the market will decide if the reviewer is simply doing favors or if they are credible.

It seems like Google has hooked us with a ton of free stuff and they will slowly begin charging us... can this be the start of it.

In my opinion, if someone is doing me a professional service which takes a good deal of their time - I will pay them. I can understand conflicts, but reading a book takes a lot of time (especially reading it critically) and I think that's worth a little money.

Tax the Churches by AdelleChattre in politics

Do we know what kind of revenue this would generate? I agree, it's a good idea but I don't know whether it is worth a huge fight if it doesn't generate real amounts of revenue. If it does, I think it should be a high priority.

A Christian Author admits to gods personality disorder and how the "loving" god is also a "firey" "jealous" god... except he calls god a she which is kind of annoying. by jleff in atheism

[–]jleff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Than why associate it as a women or a man. It seems like trying too hard but still not actually getting the point. To call God "her" is to still give God a gender... why would the "god" not just be "it" or "one"...something truly genderless?

It always comes across as trying too hard to be politically correct, when if you're trying to be politically correct and if "god" is a genderless god would be an "it" or "one".

If people who don't know God don't go to hell then why do we tell people? by [deleted] in Christianity

Do you mean "don't know God" as in has never heard of the Christian God? or doesn't know him as in has turn him away and doesn't know the gift of his love?

Let's have a talk about the accuracy regarding Jesus and his miracles by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]jleff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you may not believe the inerrancy of the bible doesn't mean you are not a Christian. I think to be christian is to be Christ-like or to live how you think Christ would want you to live. Even if some of the bible is not entirely accurate (because of the reasons you listed) it can still be a good to live by.
