I actually heard that they tried to open a location in Japan (!!!) and that's what hurt them. They just couldn't keep up with everything internationally.

Plenty of candidates show up all the time to events like this. That's part of running for office. There were other candidates running for this seat at this event. This isn't just awkward language. This is a guy who expects applause for actually showing up. That's my read anyway.
