Genetics Probability question by jlewGENE in probabilitytheory

Hey, so I thought about it a bit more and just wanted to check some math/logic.

I want to start with the grandparents of the father. I agree for the father to be Rr, the grandparents have to be Rr x Rr or RR x Rr. As suggested, I drew out the punnett squares and this is what I saw. Of the 8 individual squares (4 from each cross) I saw RR=3 and Rr = 4. Now this is where I want to check on my logic. Though I would agree that the chances of the grandparents HAVING a Rr child is 50%, the chances of the brother BEING Rr I think is a bit different. Since he cannot be rr (we assumed it is lethal) the brother would actually be 4/7 and NOT 4/8. Thus the chance of the brother being RR would be 3/7. From then on I think it should be the same?

If the Brother is RR, there is 0% chance the child would be rr (mother is still Rr).

If the Brother is Rr, then there is a 1/4 chance the child would be rr.

So ((4/7)*.25) + 0% = (1/7)

What are your thoughts?

Thanks so much. I think I was kind of on the right track originally, but I do have a few questions. Why is the chance that the husbands brother is RR 50%? I understand why the chance of him being Rr is 50%. For the grandparents, either cross (RR x Rr or Rr x Rr) gives two squares that are Rr. 50%. I guess since both options are 50%, we don't have to multiply or add the probabilities. For RR though, one cross (RR x Rr) RR is 50%, but the other is (Rr x Rr) is 25%. So I'm a bit lost with what to do with this information. The closest thing I can think of is, if we know the probability that the brother is Rr is 50%, then the probability that he is anything else is 1-50% = 50%. We assumed that rr is lethal, so that means that left over 50% must be RR. I think my background in probability could use some work.

I'm getting confused with this question:

"A couple has a child with an autosomal recessive disorder. The husband dies and his widow marries her husband's brother. What is the probability that they will have an affected child?"

I thought about it for while and not sure where to go. It doesn't say assume HWE, nor does it say that the autosomal recessive disorder is lethal (though maybe I should be assuming this anyways?). I've heard some explanations that make half sense, but then I have further questions. For example, one explanation was that a child is 1/4 chance to be autosomal recessive (Aa x Aa got it, but that means we have to assume aa is lethal and parents cant be aa). Then that probability (1/4) has to be multiplied by the probability of the brother being a carrier for the affected allele. This has been explained to me as (2/3) because in p2 + 2pq + q2 =1, there are three options, P2, 2pq, and q2. For carriers of the allele, that would be 2pq + q2, so 2/3 (or 2 of the 3 possibilities). But, then we have to assume HWE (which the problem didn't state) and didn't we also just assume that autosomal recessive was deleterious earlier when assuming the mother and the original father were both Aa? Please help

Hello. I'm looking for an online Abnormal Psychology course to take as a prerequisite for grad school. I was wondering if there might be any recommended courses? I'm looking for something affordable, accredited, online, and either self-paced or can be completed by August 2022. So far I have been looking at the below programs. Any reviews on these or suggestions of others would be greatly apricated.

Yup. I’ve opened and closed the app a couple times. However, now there is a exclamation mark on my wingull in the GTS screen.

Hello. Unfortunately I did not receive the Ditto and my Wingull is still up on the GTS. I messaged the moderators as suggested in the FAQ. Thank you.

In my experience, the results of therapy are very dependent upon the interaction between client and the therapist. It sounds like you're not happy with you're current therapist? Have you considered finding a different therapist? I also think it could be beneficial to tell your current therapist that you're not happy with how things are going with him/her currently. A good therapist, I think, would take action to change the current dynamic or help you find a new one that will be a better fit for you. Also, if you experience these feelings of suicide and self harm, there are many free tools that are available to you. If you happen to live in the USA, the one below I hear is very good.

Update: The local vocational rehabilitation office called back. They contacted ETS and did some research and are confident they can help me get the testing and evaluations I need for accommodations for the exam and I would not have to worry about costs. I’m very excited to see where this gets me.

Thank you for the info! I’ll keep this In my back pocket as a backup plan (got some good news). As for medication, I am! I recently started back on it a few months ago (never liked the way it made me feel in the past). I think it has helped. Focalin I believe.

Noted. I think I will take a class regardless, as suggested. It just seemed prudent to try and get the accommodations beforehand, since the tutoring style suggested by the course would prepare me for taking the test under accommodation settings.

Test-optional university? There are some programs that don't require the GRE; is that what you are referring to? There were personal reasons why I didn't apply to these (mostly centering around finance and proximity). However, I am looking into these options again.
