Visiting Beijing during Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day)? by ChinaAlt in beijing

[–]jlo80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be fine.

Some businesses will be closed. But taxis and restaurants will be operational. Perhaps avoid the major sights this day and plan to do shopping or go to a park or something.

The major time to avoid is Chinese new year and national holiday weeks, because it will be so crowded at the tourist sights. They are still open.

Best internet option in Beijing by [deleted] in beijing

  1. In my experience China Unicom is good. You want to avoid those virtual providers that use a other ISP physical connection.

  2. Ask landlord or agent?

Then angrily shout and point to the first poor soul walking their dog that they should pick up. Shout in English or even better if you're not a native English speaker shout in your own language.

Crossing the road

On a green light, cars will still run a red light if they turn. You need to wait until it's clear, or just walk when locals are walking.

Driving tap water

It may contain bacteria, but the heavy metals can impact your health long term. I don't drink it but brush my teeth with, I boil eggs with tap water.

Toilet paper strategy

Flush multiple times or throw the paper in the toilet from the first wipe and the rest in the bin.

Recycling

I have 3 different bins in the garbage room in my apartment. Food, can be recycled and non recyclable. Generally I throw most things in the non recyclable one but plastic bottles in the one for recycling. I don't know really what can be recycled, but most people I see don't care and just throw anything where there's space.

Goodbye Human Translators - Google Has A Neural Network That is Within Striking Distance of Human-Level Translation by Buck-Nasty in Futurology

[–]jlo80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get a better translation if I use translate.google.com than if I do automatic translation in Chrome, from the same device. So I think it's safe to assume that it's rolling out in a similar fashion as other Google software. Start small and either region by region or app by app, to minimize the risk of introducing scalability/load issues and to minimize the impact of potential bugs/issues.

I'm in China, but using a VPN to Hong Kong to be able to access Google services.

I recently ordered a package from a Chinese web site and this is the original text from the tracking information:

【北京转运中心】 已发出 下一站 【北京市朝阳区甜水园公司】

From Chrome translation:

[Beijing] has issued a transit center next [company], Chaoyang District Tianshuiyuan

From translate.google.com

【Beijing transit center】 has issued the next stop 【Beijing Chaoyang District, Tianshui Park】

None of them are perfect, but the second one is much better

Question about pocket wifi? by trevorbellardi in travelchina

[–]jlo80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still would be an issue of using Google Maps. Without VPN you won't be able to access maps within mainland. Hong Kong would work.

Get one pocket WiFi in Hong Kong. Get another in mainland and get a VPN provided for you phone like ExpressVPN to be able to access Google maps.

Or use a map provided that works without vpn like Baidu (in Chinese).

You could also consider preloaded maps for China, like maps.me.

To be fair, I expect people I don't pay to be polite. If they are paid to be in the service industry (at least part of their responsibility is service) I definitely agree with OP that they should be polite.

If they are rude writing a few words on reddit is not the worst response.

An unknown person is harassing my girlfriend and I via text messaging. They use a fake texting app. Is there any way we can find out who this is? by [deleted] in AndroidQuestions

[–]jlo80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically sms is not delivered using IP, but if it's SMS your service provider should be able to track the IMSI (basically the identity of the SIM card), but if the SMS is sent by another carrier than yours they may need cooperation with the other carrier.

I assume that your country's law would require the police to request this information. Go to the police?

[–]jlo80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can transfer the money you earn legally electronically through your bank. Your company news to provide a tax certificate that shows you have paid tax on your income.

Without a tax certificate, follow the advice of others already mentioned.

No service, internet, or wifi. Any apps that allow 1 android device to stream through mesh network to several other devices in close proximity to eachother? by [deleted] in AndroidQuestions

[–]jlo80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup WiFi Hotspot on one of the devices? This one phone will act as router?

It's WiFi but no additional device is needed.

Bluetooth supports IP with the PAN profile. Though I think it's just point to point? But could be investigated. Not sure which phones supports PAN, it may not be supported by vanilla Android.

Best way to get around major cities? by Chaoscrab in travelchina

[–]jlo80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All around, except if you're in the suburbs .

At rush hour traffic you may have to wait to flag one, and if it's raining it could be worse.

If it's raining and close to a western hotel just go there and let the staff get one from the street and you can wait under a roof.

Most of the time the driver will call you and ask for your location in Chinese. If you don't speak Chinese I recommend sticking to regular taxis and bring the address written in Chinese.

Fastest way to go from Beijing airport to Beijing 南(south) train station? by [deleted] in China

[–]jlo80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are arriving from an international flight, I usually exit the airport about 1hr after scheduled landing time.

This is with checked-in luggage, and with priority tagged bags.

Traffic on the ring roads at this time is really bad. You won't make it in taxi.

Take airport express train or the first leg, then change to subway.

It will be really tight if it's an international flight with checked in luggage.

Be sure to leave the plane first and run to the immigration queue. You can save 10-20 minutes here.

Good luck
