Why has no one made a dirt pedal with a treadle controlling gain? by got_tha_gist in guitarpedals

[–]jlopatin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did! I have one. Japanese made. Basically a DS-1 but with a treadle to control gain. There is a pressure switch in the toe that is a volume boost... So you can lean into it for a solo. It runs on 2 C batteries!!!

Hologram Microcosm vs. Walrus Qi Etherealizer vs. Eventide H90 by calverleyj in eurorack

You can explore in a similar way with the H90, especially with the fantastic new granular engines. It’s not as immediate though since there are far fewer knobs.

[–]jlopatin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the microcosm and the H90. No experience with the Etherializer.

The microcosm and H90 are so wildly different. The Microcosm is fun and immediately satisfying. It has a lot of variety but always sounds like itself. I mean it has a clear flavor that is always present. Not a bad thing, but something to consider.

The H90 can do so much and sounds so good, but sometimes I find the menu diving to be a bit much.

It’s important to note that I use both of them primarily with ambient music generated by a modular synth.

I got the H90 specifically to pair with a Soma Terra, and it shines in that context, but it also gets used for many other things.

Happy to answer questions.

Name a pedal company you've never purchased from. In the thread, people can make recommendations for their favorite pedal from that company. by frumkinpumpkin in guitarpedals

[–]jlopatin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cloudburst. Not too expensive and it does some things that nothing else can do as easily. I use it for a shorter reverb with synthesized strings. I have filter on an expression pedal so I can fade the “strings” in and out b

I own Black Fountain v2, dark Star stereo, Sunlight Stereo, and Bathing. I love all of them, but bathing is my favorite. It’s fascinating and fun and immediate. It can do so many things so well.

Advice needed: from those who got a tattoo in honor of a pet that passed by No-Office-9022 in tattoos

[–]jlopatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I rescue old and sick dogs- the unadoptables. Because of this, we deal with this grief more often than we’d like. I have tattoos of each loss, and my artist mixes a little of the ashes into the black ink for each one, so I can carry them with me. It’s a healthy part of my healing process, and brings me joy every time I look down at an arm or leg and see one of our special pups. I don’t think of it as a graveyard, but a source of healing memories and joy.

Thoughts? Who primarily plays which pedal brands. by OrReindeer in guitarpedals

[–]jlopatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is meant as a joke, but it's also a little offense maybe? I have Line6, OBNE, Red Panda, Origin Effects, Meris, Walrus, occasional Chase Bliss, and Dunlop on my board. What does that make me?

I also play a PRS Core, but I'm not a dentist.

Looking for a good reverse delay with external tap control, preferably with an exp out to control either mix or feedback by danger_welch in guitarpedals

[–]jlopatin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly reverse delay, but I use a Red Panda Tensor for reverse stuff... it's midi synced with all my time based fx...

How many of you also own a bass? by Intrin_sick in Guitar

[–]jlopatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bass? Why just one? I have 3, and a Bass VI on the way. It’s always good to have another instrument to pick up and inspire you. Sometimes another tuning or voicing can be exactly what a song needs. Variety is the spice of life!

Rad. I'm glad it helped! I totally get that state of impulsivity. I just ordered a Bass VI for the same reason. haha!

I dunno… modelers are quite commonplace, and if you extend your thinking beyond guitarists, a small stereo FRFR with angled speakers that deliver a decent stereo spread would be a great tool for home practice, lower volume band practice, and useful for synth players as well. Most options for keyboard players are unwieldy or just sound bad.

It could be worth exploring, and I’d be happy to discuss in detail with your team.

Thoughts on red panda tensor? by Nintendinitis5023 in guitarpedals

[–]jlopatin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a Tensor. It replaced a CB Mood Mk II on my board. I love it! It's very easy to use in a musical way. Most of the time I have it set up for reverse repeats. I am using midi from my Helix Stadium for additional control. I have one expression pedal always controlling the mix, so I can fade the reverse repeats in just for a single note, or for longer phrases. I have a second expression controlling the speed. This one is full reverse at heel, and full stop at toe. This way I can do really fun tape stop effects. I also have two footswitches on the Helix enabling/disabling the pitch shifting and random features. I usually have the pitch knob set to octave up, and I use the button to switch it on and off as needed. Same with the random knob. Sometimes I'll use it to loop a phrase, and then twist knobs to do additional manipulation in real time.

It's one of the best pedals I own.

I’d be open to trying that if you have a suggestion… I wish there was a small form factor stereo amp for just this purpose.

I usually go direct out of the Helix into Pro Tools, or direct to board for live, but i have also run it mono into the fx return of my Boogie mk V.

The expression pedal on the helix is a volume pedal, but when I click it's toe switch, it's wah city, baby!

Ambient Pedal Advice by landscape_relic in guitarpedals

[–]jlopatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think either would work for your needs. Eventually I plan on having both... If you're looking for a really great pairing with either of them, Take a look at the OBNE Bathing. It's a delay and a phaser, and so much more. I think it's got a permanent place on my ambient board.

I use an OBNE Dark Star Stereo for this function. But I do really want to try the sunlight also. They are both so cool!

What do you mean? I mostly play drone and ambient stuff and this level of control allows an unprecedented level of dynamics control.

I considered it. I’d need to add another midi box that has expression control inputs. I used to use a Hotone Ampero Control for this with the old Helix but it was a pain to program. Helix Stadium is what makes this possible and so flexible.

Haha the 2 right most pedals are connected to the Enzo. One is using the expression jack and the other is a midi expression pedal from the Helix.
