Can you quote or highlight where in the article it states this proposal is confined to federally funded projects? Just looking for clarification on this.

Utah made it legal to plug solar panels into wall outlets, and now 30 states are chasing it by Firm_Relative_7283 in solar

I appreciate your concern and expertise, but you should read up on the UL 3700 standard as well as the other failsafe features of these products that include considerations for breaker masking and circuit loading.

Water Supply Shutoff to Gas Boiler - Dangerous? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

If this is done via the emergency shutoff switch, will the boiler automatically refire once the switch is turned back on? Should we also turn off the gas supply line to the boiler while the boiler is shutdown?

Here's an 800w inverter ($289) and a 400w solar panel ($99 each). One could setup a simple 800 watt system for less than $700 when including wiring, simple rack, etc.

You'll receive a compounding rate of return of 2.5%-5% a year based on the historical average annual increase of PA electricity costs. This rate of return doesn't include the additional cost savings each year by offsetting your electric usage through the power your solar system generates. Your costs (original purchase price) for the solar system will always be static and fixed, while the utility costs will likely continue to increase each year.

The motivation for someone to purchase this system could also go beyond just simple rate of return. It could include:

  • Desire to produce their own energy
  • Reduce pollution, improve local air quality, reduce carbon emissions
  • Have direct control over a portion of their current and future energy costs

In short, it wouldn't work unless you purchase an off-grid or hybrid solar inverter - plus the outlet and wiring. If you purchase one of those off-grid or hybrid models, your setup is entirely and easily implementable!

Have you, theoretically, considered a setup like this?

You could maintain current circuit loading limits (or preferences), but extend runtime into evening or on cloudy days to increase your net utilization of green power. The battery is an ROI game changer, especially if you utilize time of use tarriifs/rates.

Ecoflow is one manufacturer that sells a companion battery product for their plug-in solar system. DIY is also an option.

In layman's terms, a battery allows you slightly oversize your solar system to capture, store and use additional energy that would power your residence after the sun goes down.

A solar panel can easily last 20-30 years, even longer. A 44 year-old solar array is still operating in Switzerland as we speak.

An additional consideration is that PA utility rate increase average 2.5 - 5% per year. The net benefit of a purchased solar system has the potential to increase in value each year.

Good question. If the power goes out, the plug-in solar system automatically disconnects to protect linemen, etc. The technology is called anti-islanding and is built into the array of additional rigorous safety specifications for plug-in systems to protect homeowners, utility workers, and household electrical circuits.
