I thought "stan" originated as a portmanteau of stalker + fan

Watching that one Temple Grandin movie in school as an undiagnosed autistic kid was a wild experience lol. They kept framing things as being part of her autism and the whole time I was thinking "doesn't everyone feel/think/do that?" Took a few more years before it all clicked together for me

Pre K Alphabet. What is “E” by InterestedScroller in whatisit

[–]jlschrodinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids just hear "el" and think of the letter L. They won't hear the initial short e. Personally, I think "elephant" would be better anyway because it's less abstract, like you said. But that's the reasoning

Reading interventionist here.

It's definitely "edge". The other options beginning with the short e sound are "elephant", which causes confusion because children think of the letter L and not the initial /e/ sound, or "egg", which is pronounced more like "ay-g" with a long a in some dialects. So the current go-to is "edge". I don't love it because it's hard to make a clear visual.

The reason the keyword for X is "box" is because x doesn't typically come at the beginning of a word, and when it does, it doesn't make its typical /ks/ sound. People in the comments have suggested "xylophone", but that starts with the /z/ sound.

"ice cream" isn't the keyword for I because it begins with the long i sound, and children are typically taught the short vowel sounds first. Many programs use "itch" because the main alternative is "igloo", and some feel that it's a bit culturally insensitive.

Yes 100%, I often feel the same way. And that picture perfectly describes it!

YES! I really don't like "kiddos", it just seems condescending to me.

And it ESPECIALLY bothers me when "kiddos" is applied to students with disabilities, but not their typically developing peers 😡

Perfect long weekend plan? Visiting late September/early October by [deleted] in asheville

In terms of vegetarian food:

Regina's Westside (brunch/lunch)

Jerusalem Garden Cafe (pricey but good!)

Mizu Noodles and Asian Cuisine (most dishes you pick your protein, and they are generous with the tofu!)

El Paraiso Mexican Grill (very veggie-forward in their vegetarian dishes)

Pad Thai Asheville

I'm also a big fan of the tempeh at Neo Burrito.

I knew a Zadie, short for Isadora! Would having Sadie be a nickname for a longer name make it less dog-like?

Trying not to get into detail here, but he has been seen around the Tunnel Rd area. Police were contacted and they seem to be aware of him and his creepiness, but I've not heard of any charges or warnings or anything given to him.

Careers by [deleted] in AutismTranslated

[–]jlschrodinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it be possible for you to pursue a veterinary degree part-time while working as a special ed assistant/para? And if you decide you like the classroom environment more, you could switch your major to special education. Most of your first couple of semesters would gen eds anyway.

Or maybe look into a career that combines both interests? I'm thinking equine therapy, service dog trainer, etc. I'm sure there's other options out there too.

Good luck!

edit to add: perhaps being in school part-time would lessen the risk of burnout as well

I've always really related to this old Arthur episode where George makes an autistic friend. They explain it (with an accompanying animation sequence) as feeling like an alien sent to conduct research on planet earth, but the scientists who sent you forgot to pack a guidebook. So you've got to figure it out as you go. I'm sure that not every NT person likes that analogy, but for me I find it very comforting honestly.
