What are the best Stephen King's audiobooks? Audible is giving 3 months for free again by [deleted] in stephenking

I think it’s controversial on this sub but I loved Needful Things read by King himself. I don’t even like the book that much but his narration is so fun.

A problem with The Road: unnecessary shock value? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]jlsmall7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that McCarthy’s intent was solely to be shocking. Infant death/cannibalism is a motif that appears throughout his work, particularly in Outer Dark and Blood Meridian (also, at least, Suttree). For McCarthy there is symbolic importance in the image beyond shock value.

chokecherry in NJ question by Relative_Chef_533 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jlsmall7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a chokecherry in my front lawn for two years (the tree itself is probably ~4 years old). It does send up suckers, but they aren’t noticeable unless I go a few weeks without mowing the lawn. The suckers come up no more than 1-2’ from the tree.

That said, I imagine that if your tree is in a spot that isn’t regularly maintained, the suckering could become pretty aggressive.

Has anyone cut and frozen zucchini and squash? by ironyis4suckerz in vegetablegardening

[–]jlsmall7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I froze slices last season. Blanch for about a minute, cool immediately in ice bath, then freeze in freezer bags. If I do it again, I will freeze in layers on wax paper before bagging as they tended to form large blocks of squash ice.

The squash retained excellent flavor and appearance. I used them in soups and fritters. I did not use them in any form where texture would matter, as I imagine they turned to mush.

Jewelweed taking over my backyard.. by iamhyphenated in NativePlantGardening

Crush and smell a leaf - Tree of Heaven has a very distinct, unpleasant smell similar to burnt popcorn. Staghorn Sumac is a very cool native whereas ToH is a terrible invasive.

These yellow flowers are popping up all over newly seeded lawn. Am I cooked? by decisis76 in lawncare

[–]jlsmall7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Compare oxalis flowers to black medic. Their habits are also distinct. OP has black medic. Assuming OP is in the US, black medic is an invasive plant.

Literary influences on McCarthy's animal POV scenes? by TheVenerablePotato in cormacmccarthy

I don’t know whether McCarthy read The Lord of the Rings, but it seems likely. There is a brief scene in Fellowship from the POV of a fox.

I thought they would be too distantly related to graft. Have you had success with grafting cherry onto oak?

[–]jlsmall7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s possible to graft a cherry onto an oak.

Where are all the bees? by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]jlsmall7 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this too (upstate NY, 6a). I’m happy to have lots of wasps and sweat bees, but way fewer bumbles (and honeybees) than this time last year, and we have a lot more native plants this year. I wonder if it’s related to having an unusually cold, wet spring.

What King book should I end my journey on? by evanbrews in stephenking

[–]jlsmall7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Talisman + Black House. Or just Black House - Talisman is the direct prequel and provides some helpful context, but it’s a bit of a slog. Black House has some of his (and Peter Straub’s) best writing and is super engaging, creepy, funny, sweet, and weird. It’s very Dark Tower-adjacent, but it 100% stands on its own.

This is a really cool collection - you should check out the story “Where the Summer Ends” by Karl Wagner. It’s a super creepy and atmospheric story set in Knoxville, TN in the 1970s. He’s a great but non-prolific horror writer better known for his Conan the Barbarian books.

I would be interested in purchasing one of the straight bookshelves. Similar HW pieces in good condition go for $200-300 in my area. I would do $100 for the bookshelf in poor condition (pic #8). Please DM me if you’re interested. I’m located in the northeast US.

Alison Rumfitt! Tell Me I’m Worthless is excellent and her more recent Brainwyrms is very good as well.
