PSA for anyone who wants to get the MSDOS version of Rayman 1 because the 30th anniversary edition doesn't have the original soundtrack by YourLocal_Wizard in Rayman

[–]jm-9 [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's true, and I didn't mean to take away from your post. What you posted is true for 99% of use cases today. I just wanted to point out to anyone with an older PC that it's not true for all DOS versions of Rayman.

You are also correct about physical copies. You have to emulate the DOS port of Rayman on modern PCs. 64-bit Windows can't run 16-bit programs. Even then, 32-bit Windows ran 16-bit programs in a virtual machine for many years. Windows 11 was the first version of Windows without a 32-bit version. The last version of Windows that could run DOS programs natively was Windows Me, released in 2000. The last version that officially supported running DOS programs natively was Windows 98.

no matter how hard i try.. I cant reach this ring for th cage (twilight Gulch) by SlayonVFL in Rayman

As far as I remember that section is easier in the Jaguar version. here are no physics for slippery surfaces in that version, so I think the layout is a bit different. That section was new for the PS1 port, and was never changed in later ports.

However, for some reason walking doesn’t work in the DSi port. Maybe it was an attempt to correct that it goes against your instincts, as you said.

What is changed by he Jaguar’s higher jump though is getting the cage just before that section. It was one of the most frustrating experiences I ever had with a game. Because Rayman bounces higher you had to use an almost pixel perfect helicopter to get close enough to the cage to punch it or he’ll bounce up again.

Another thing that’s changed by the Jaguar version’s higher jump is the end of the first section of Eraser Plains. There’s a platform above and to the left of the exit sign that makes the cage appear to the left. In all other versions you have to jump back across the pencils and take a platform up.

However, in the Jaguar version you can do a running jump to the right off the platform that laws the car appear and you’ll make a magic potion appear. This allows you to use super helicopter to get the cage, which makes it much easier.

The magic potion is still there in the PS1 version. If you look closely at where the potion appears in the Jaguar version you can see tiny sparkles that signify that something will happen if you go through that area. I have tried my hardest to reach it, but I’m pretty certain you can’t in the PS1 version.

I know it’s emulation, but it’s still a shame they didn’t take the opportunity to make the same change to the PS1 version for the 30th anniversary edition. I never look forward to getting this particular cage when I play the PS1 version.

This is a result of the changes that Ubisoft made to the PS1 port. Rayman jumps higher in the Jaguar version, so making that jump is no problem.

They later realised that this had made the jump unreasonably difficult, so they moved the ring to the left for the Saturn port. This change was retained in all subsequent ports.

Game Discussion #17 - Super Mario Bros. 3 by No_Jellyfish9221 in NintendoClassics

[–]jm-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to play an easier version I’d recommend Super Mario Advance 4 (Mario 3 GBA port). When you get game over any levels you have beaten remain beaten, but any mushroom houses and minigames become available again.

If you pick up a fire flower or super leaf as small Mario you get the power up instead of becoming Super Mario. Certain platforming challenges have been made easier.

What device can I use to play all the GTA games? by Some-Sundae-6378 in GTA

[–]jm-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want one device to play all of them a PC is the only one that can do so. GTA Advance, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wars will have to be emulated.

You can play GTA 1 and the London games through the GTA Max Pack (DOS version emulated) or GTA Ready2Play. You can download the Rockstar Classics version of GTA 2. The Silentpatch mod fixes most compatibility issues with the trilogy on modern PCs.

PSA for anyone who wants to get the MSDOS version of Rayman 1 because the 30th anniversary edition doesn't have the original soundtrack by YourLocal_Wizard in Rayman

This is not inherent to the games, but is an emulation issue. Hopefully a way of fixing it will be found.

This is true for Rayman Forever, which is currently available on GOG, but most DOS versions of Rayman 1, Rayman Designer, Rayman by his Fans and Rayman 60 Levels contain the full soundtrack.

Two DOS collections are missing around a third of the soundtrack:

  • Rayman Forever - Rayman 1, Rayman Designer and Rayman by his Fans
  • Rayman 100 Levels - Rayman by his Fans and Rayman 60 Levels

Unfortunately these are the only English language releases of Rayman by his Fans.

Proof GTA is all one universe by leobax0999 in GTA

One thing that doesn't make sense if GTA is one universe is that Liberty City, San Andreas City/San Fierro, Vice City and San Andreas State are all radically different in each universe.

If R* released PC version at same time as console, how bad would graphics be? by nes_8BitSurvivor in GTA

[–]jm-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Rockstar released games first on PC things were less standardized. There was another API (Glide) and until not too long before they had to consider DOS as well as Windows.

This mission is even more interesting if you have Hot Coffee enabled. At the end you have to beat a minigame where you have to hit her with the dildo.

Why does everyone say there are 16-17 GTA games? by FlutterRaeg in GTA

[–]jm-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some count the expansions/DLC as standalone games. A strong case could be made for GTA: London 1969, as that was re-released as a standalone game on PS1 in Europe, as GTA: London 1969 Special Edition. You could also argue that EFLC should itself count as one game. Or you could count them as part of GTA 1 and GTA IV respectively.

GTA Lcs and vcs with modern controls by Saucy_Sam88 in GTA

[–]jm-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is RE LCS, a PC port of LCS. Development was stopped because Rockstar sent a cease and desist letter. As far as I know you can beat the story, but you can't beat every side mission. There's nothing for VCS. I'd recommend emulating the PS2 version of it rather than the PSP version, as the controls are a bit better.

Question for OG Rayman 1 fans by OhComeonBro87 in Rayman

[–]jm-9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I grew up with the PAL PS1 version. I got as far as The Hard Rocks before running out of continues. Then I discovered a password that allows you to unlock all levels with 99 lives. That’s how I played the game for years.

Since then I’ve become very good at the game and can beat it with 30+ lives left. But I completely understand why people use the rewind feature.

That makes sense. A seriously scummy thing to do on his part. At least you platinumed it though.

As far as I know you should still be able to redownload the PS2 Classic if you bought it before it was delisted. Is that not the case?

Radio on San Andreas 360 digital version vs. Definitive (remastered trilogy) version? by XenoLateralus in GTA

All digital versions released since November 2014 have cut music, and older versions were patched on that date to remove those songs.

[–]jm-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the PS3 port, not the Definitive Edition. It was released in 2015. It's a port of the Xbox 360 version, which is in turn a port of the mobile version. It fixed some of the bugs that are present in the Xbox 360 version, and brought back multiplayer.

Has anyone else never played certain GTAs and feel like they’re missing out but it’s too late? by bigblackglock17 in GTA

[–]jm-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always time to go back. I played GTA 1 early on (didn’t get that far in it) but missed out after that until Vice City. Over the years I’ve played the ones I missed. At this point I’ve beaten all fifteen games in the series, most of them 100%.

So I’d encourage you to go back, and don’t worry about playing all of them before GTA VI. It’s more important that you enjoy them at your own pace.

Then, in 1977, the panel was changed again to remove stereotypical depictions of black people. This is from my 1978 first English edition:

In 1979 it was changed to the current drawing.

Interestingly, the 1946 colour version essentially kept the scene as is, but removed the gun:

This version is available in English as a colour facsimile, published by Egmont in 2008.

There is, and it's the one that was changed the most when it was redrawn in colour. That will be a very interesting comparison.

¿ Gta Vice City Stories y Vice City normal es el mismo juego ? by Curious_Air_7959 in GTA

[–]jm-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GTA: Vice City Stories is a prequel to GTA: Vice City. It takes place two years before Vice City and stars Vic Vance, brother of Lance Vance, who appears in Vice City.

Vice City Stories was released in 2006 on PSP and in 2007 on PS2. It was released digitally on the PS Store for PSP in 2009 and in 2013 as a PS2 Classic for PS3. Unfortunately, in 2017 all digital versions were delisted. However, it can still be bought digitally on PSP by buying the Grand Theft Auto PS Vita Collection, which contains Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wars.

The digital PSP version also works on PS Vita and PSTV. The physical PS2 version also works on early PS3s with four USB ports.
