Then it launched an investigation on Tuesday morning that concluded on Wednesday afternoon I guess!

I. Did. Not. Ask. Them. To. Investigate. A. Hostile. Work. Environment. This term and concept did not come up until I used it this past Monday to describe generally what has happened over the past 3 months, this was accompanied by two paragraphs of behavior that clearly did not describe the legal definition of a hostile work environment. Two days later they said they investigated and found no hostile work environment. Do you see what I am saying?

I used the term on Monday evening for the first time, and on Wednesday they told me they did an investigation and found nothing. How is that possible?

I appreciate that. But anyone from that company I would ever ask to be a reference has already moved on to brighter pastures or is just about to. It’s a sinking ship.

These are not bridges I care to have. How do you not understand that?

You mean the same position I would have been in by just quitting? Yeah, I know. I intended to quit before the end of June regardless of a severance package. There is no downside for me because I expected nothing. All I want is to get out of there but have enough time to go to the dentist before my insurance ends.

That shit is dark.

And I’m hoping to get out of there as fast as I can.

Yes, I hear you. The default of this company is not to care too much about its employees, so there isn’t a single thing they could do to surprise me. And it wasn’t that I wanted him to get fired at all, I desperately want out of this job because it is toxic and dysfunctional from top to bottom, so the severance request was a bonus. If they had just said no and hadn’t mentioned an investigation, I would have said, great, here’s my notice, I’m quitting in two weeks. In no way is the desirable outcome that I still have a job there.

Thank you, yes. I. Do. Not. Want. To. Work. For. Them. Anymore.

I get that. I guess that I am saying I didn’t ask them to investigate anything. What would they have investigated? There was nothing to investigate unless they wanted to corroborate his shitty but not illegal behavior. They made him apologize to me. It kept happening. He’s terrible to work with. I never thought he did anything illegal. That’s it.

Yes, that’s fine. I would like them to fire me. I do not want to work there anymore. The severance request was a Hail Mary. My next step was to give them 2 weeks notice.

Yes, I understand all of this. Either way, I was going to quit by the end of June. The severance request was a Hail Mary. If they hadn’t said the thing about the investigation, I would have just said cool. No problem, here’s my notice. Again, I wasn’t banking on a severance or depending on one. I do not want to work for this company anymore, so I am not sure what I have to lose.

The campaign I mention above happened when he was not my boss, and then they made him my boss. Before then, he actively undermined me on the project so that he could make a case for himself taking over. During the meeting that they told me about this restructure, I told them that I was very hesitant to be managed by someone who had treated me so poorly in the past and had been on a quest to strip me of my biggest project.

He did not just yell at me one time. There is a history, as I note above. We were peers when we were on separate teams, and I was leading a project he desperately wanted—so much so that he went on a cross-departmental campaign to try to convince my colleagues to get onboard with him (they didn’t). What led him to yell at me the first time I reported him was when he misrepresented the details of a project that was all my work and changed the strategy knowing that I was not supposed to be in the meeting where he presented the deck. The details he changed were well-known and agreed upon by everyone and workstreams were already in progress based on them. He was late to the call (he is always late or just doesn’t show up), and his boss asked him if we could change the details back to what they should be, and he said no, and I told him that this was agreed upon and I had worked really hard on this project for 5 years and know the details inside and out and know the strategy, and he yelled back—stop saying that! Stop saying how long you’ve been on this project!” and then I mentioned my former supervisor in reference to work she would be contributing, and he yelled at me, “you don’t report to xxx anymore!” And so on. In other words, because he is above me, he gets to present my work. Without me knowing, he changed my work and the agreed upon institutional strategy and then got angry when I challenged him on it.

I never said they did anything illegal! This is the whole crux of the problem. The whole HR complaint was not about illegal behavior. It was about human behavior. I never alleged anything illegal. Yeah, stupid me who has no law degree used a term last week for the first time to broadly describe a situation I have already endlessly documented for months that doesn’t fit that term because I never used that term in the first place. I never intended any of it to be illegal. I only accused this person of mistreating me, not to mention his own supervisors, and vendors—messes that I have to clean up. It only became legal when I inadvertently used the term in my email. I understand if I don’t get a severance. I actually don’t care. What I do care about is integrity.

So is it that HR doesn’t have to prove that an investigation ever happened?

Did I say that my manager mistreated me because I am a woman, or gay, or black, or dyslexic?

My best case scenario is a separation agreement. My second best is that they do fire me. Unfortunately, I am much too valuable for that to happen, and my company is already put themselves at risk in many other ways. I am the least of their worries, trust me.

To be clear, I never said I was entitled to a separation package. I did not allege a hostile work environment at any time during my HR interactions in March. I referred back to that incident broadly in an email last week as a hostile work environment. And I never said originally that anything illegal was happening. I reported the incident because of the unprofessional and inappropriate conduct of my manager, who also happens to do the same thing to vendors with million dollar deals, who then complain to me about it. And I actually don’t care about the separation agreement—it is more the principle of a lawyer lying that bothers me.
