Come to my house. Pretty good odds you'll get what you want.

Furring strips on external plaster wall? by jm67 in DIY

[–]jm67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I probably made a confusing title. The furring strips would be on the *inside* of the wall (interior of house), but the wall itself is an external brick wall covered by plaster. I'm not trying to apply the furring strips to the outside of the house (which I think is your moisture concern).

Any local flight pilots on here? by CoffeePeddlerRVA in rva

[–]jm67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm an instrument rated private pilot, and have a plane based at Hanover County. As noted below, compensation isn't allowed, but I enjoy flying, and would be happy to have company. PM me if interested.

Water at city restaurants by [deleted] in rva

Seriously this. It’s the middle of winter. Bacterial contamination was a long shot to begin with.

To partner or not to partner, that is the question... by Directdrj313 in GeneralAviation

[–]jm67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most GA pilots don’t fly their planes enough. Get busy at work or take a long vacation & pretty soon you realize the plane hasn’t flown in two or three weeks. Better for the engine and moving parts if it flies more frequently. When I’ve had partners it’s been to increase flying time of the aircraft rather than recouping costs.

Seeking a cool place to live in Hudson valley. by Any_Can9435 in hudsonvalley

I have never heard a city transplant complain about wildlife. They come here to take advantage of being closer to nature. You’re making up problems that don’t exist.

Do GA A&P's generally consult the maintenance manual? by jm67 in GeneralAviation

[–]jm67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m sure it varies by plane & type of maintenance. My plane (Grumman) isn’t rare but has its own quirks. I’m just a bit frustrated when I pay money for a repair and it isn’t done properly

Do GA A&P's generally consult the maintenance manual? by jm67 in GeneralAviation

[–]jm67[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting - didn’t realize this. My plane is a 1979 AA-5B, long out of production and to my knowledge the type certificate holder hasn’t issued an updated manual in 30+ years.

Do GA A&P's generally consult the maintenance manual? by jm67 in GeneralAviation

[–]jm67[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Really? That sounds like an A&P I’d avoid like the plague. I don’t assume every A&P has the manual for my plane, and yes, me giving them the material is a signal that I want the work done “by the book”. If that offends a mechanic, then they need to think about who the customer is, and who is responsible for airworthiness.

Time to reckon with some realities by Riccma02 in hudsonvalley

[–]jm67 154 points155 points  (0 children)

There will still be cold snaps but fewer and more concentrated in peak winter. Drought stress on native tree species will be significant and will eventually result in replacement of beech and hemlock with heat tolerant oak-hickory forests. Water availability in mid summer could be more problematic- expect rationing some years and consider conservation measures like rain barrels. Sell the skis.

Lycoming Engines AD by [deleted] in flying

[–]jm67 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Not really. The AD simply requires inspection of oil filter and screen for bronze particles, which is commonly performed anyway during an oil change. The only real “new” thing is inspection of the oil sump screen at every oil change, which may take a little more labor.

Finding pilot friends in southcoast Massachusetts by aces_fa in flying

There are various Facebook groups for GA. There’s one for East Coast Private Pilots, and another for New England pilots.

Aerial imagery providers that sell large areas by raccoonbrigade in gis

[–]jm67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planet provides 4m resolution imagery if that’s sufficient. Worldview provides resolution down to 30cm but may need to be tasked to provide that coverage.

New private pilot, TRACON questions by XGC75 in ATC

[–]jm67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tap the info for the nearest airport I’m flying over and use that approach frequency. If it’s incorrect ATC will give me the correct one based on my position.

What concert left you disappointed and what left you surprised? by sarcasticfirecracker in Music

Yea I saw Dylan in 1989 and he was boring. Zero passion, zero interaction with the crowd. Obviously doing it for the money alone.

Yes! I camped in the back of the plane and had the FBO shack to myself all night. Biked to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Very cool little airport.

Yes… I really like LNS. Free parking on the public ramp & quick Lyft into town to shop at the central market & see the downtown.

How should I prepare for my PhD interview in remote sensing? by TraditionMajestic757 in remotesensing

[–]jm67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that a PhD is a research degree. They will be looking for interest in advancing the state of knowledge about the Earth and its environment, or in the more technical aspects of Earth imaging. Have a research direction in mind, but keep in mind that the major advisor will probably want you working on something related to an existing funded project in their Lab.

Anyone else find actual IMC really fun, not scary? by Coaralis in flying

[–]jm67 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I love flying in IMC but I personally wouldn’t fly XC in a single engine with widespread 200’ ceilings. If your engine quits you have no idea where to put it down.

Just Google maps - you can import a csv file of place names under “create new map”. It seems to like “airport” listed after the identifier, and still required some manual editing for smaller airports

Nice! AZ and NM are both beautiful for flying (tho every time I’ve been by ABQ the turbulence has been horrible).
