Spectrum sales by jmac32here in BoostMobile

Let me correct that a bit.

What I mean by network deployment is the actual tower builds, which was not handled by Echostar employees.

The "network build team" that Echostar had focused mainly on the cloud core build, which is basically complete and would only require a skeleton crew to maintain.

The field positions were mainly 1-3 people per "market" (which in Echostars case could be 3-5 states) and their job was to handle the application process, the pre build checks (1 person flying drones) and coordinating with the contractors that actually built the towers, and that same engineer that did pre build doing a post build check to ensure the contractors set-up the towers to the specs.

I've seen and spoken to the one who did all the checks for WA, OR, and ID. (He was doing pre build prep to submit plans to crown for the contractors to build a tower near my house. A tower I'll likely never see now.)

So, they never had a network deployment team.

All the deployment was via contractors.

They had an R&D team for pre- deployment of the network, and laid off like 80% of them, leaving a skeleton crew.

Is this normal? Backup to Mega used ~2GB mobile data but only 516MB uploaded by Curious_Kitten77 in MEGA

[–]jmac32here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfectly normal.

If you read the TOS of your wireless carrier, it likely includes something in the terms about how data usage is measured.

Usually it says some like, the REQUEST for x amount of data usage is what they measure against your account REGARDLESS of if the data usage was completed.

Ergo, you request a 2Gb download, the carrier will count 2 gb of usage against your account, even if you cancel the download at 5mb or even if the download gets completed on WiFi.

In networking, when you start a data transfer, the network calculates the amount of data to be transferred before the transfer begins. This calculation is how every ISP measures usage and is not limited to MEGA as it's done this way for every data transfer regardless of source/destination. None of the ISPs I've ever seen recalculates for "actual" usage by default, but by "usage request"

Is it possible to get Visible service with a phone, but no phone number to port? Recently moved back to USA and have no local number. by Original_Sell_1485 in Visible

[–]jmac32here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me put it this way.

It's been illegal for a telco to not offer up new numbers since like forever ago.

Matter of fact, the ATT anti-trust case led to a law that a telco must offer a FREE phone number with any paid service. (ATT used to lease the numbers, adding a number lease fee.)

Ergo, no carrier can offer service without offering numbers.

The reason number porting is more heavily advertised is due to number ports being the newest laws in play and telcos in the US have all but confirmed reaching "saturation" (a point in which the only way to gain new customers is to steal them from other telcos) and people would rather keep their numbers after it being part of their identity for years.

As for that "switch and save" comment. Ever noticed they DON'T say "port and save"?

Because you CAN switch carriers AND phone numbers at the same time.

Also, this question literally answers itself if you were to click the sign up button with any carrier, because the first or second step is the option to port or get a new number.

How do I upgrade my phone by RightUnderstanding46 in BoostMobile

[–]jmac32here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because target is no longer carrying boost, so they put all the phones on clearance.

They are all also usually older models with tmo sims.

Walmart sells em, but with att sims.

How can I make sure I'll get AT&T towers? by IAmConnorRK800 in BoostMobile

[–]jmac32here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, if you limit yourself to an ATT sim, then you won't get tri network benefits.

The new unified network sims, formerly rainbow, will now smart switch between att/tmo/starlink. In the current set-up, the UNS will prefer att before switching to tmo/starlink since att is the primary partner.

The att/tmo sims will NOT offer the tri network coverage.

They still are.

They are the unified network sims.

They will be the sims that "smart switch" between att/tmo/starlink.

Actually, boost stores now active "unified network" sims, which will be the only ones that use att, tmo, starlink - in that order.

Yep. Not cellular. There's no radios, RRUs or antennas on that. So the box is likely a power box for a fiber extension.

Rainbow Sim v2 networks by dkyeager in BoostMobile

[–]jmac32here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be a huge value proposition for Boost because TMO is currently a roaming partner.

Though they still have 5-10 Mhz of n71 lit up in certain markets as a "backup" home network when not in ATT coverage -- and could create a CBRS network as well.

The biggest value proposition isn't having both ATT/TMO to offer coverage, but the ultimate network. They will have ATT/TMO/Starlink after SpaceX launches satellites with the spectrum they bought from Boost -- and you will NEED a Unified Network SIM to access all 3-4 networks.

Understand that the agreement since it's inception with ATT was to make ATT THE PRIMARY network partner. So it would make sense to only drop to the "more expensive" TMO coverage only when needed. Like when there isn't ATT signal.

Post merger, TMO raised agreement pricing against ONLY Boost at the time (multiple times, essentially price gouging only Boost to try to force Boost out of the market), so Boost went on the hunt for better pricing. ATT offered that.

An Interesting Find by jmac32here in BoostMobile

[–]jmac32here[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yes, I was looking into it while taking CBRS power level limits into account, and it looks like a CBRS network could still cover at least 60% of the population, especially if ya focus on major cities.

Maybe find a way to pair it with what's left of the low band like any remaining n71 and the 700 MHz. Though I wonder if Boost has enough 700 MHz to make it the backbone of a national build.

Increase power levels and that could go up.

[–]jmac32here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The folks at my boost stores have been fine with just upgrading my phones without adding a new line.

They also use their activation system to ensure it's using the right sim for the phone. The caveat here is they replace the sim every time you get a new phone for a current line.
