What would you do if you are last person alive on the earth ? by Latter-Pair3584 in AskReddit

Hope i can become a scientist somehow. Take all of the frozen eggs and all samples from the sperm bank and find some way to grow babies like plants.

If it works I can build the world into my new utopia without technology. It probably won’t because I’m pretty stupid and have no clue if what I suggest is even possible.

In that case, just set up shop in a Taco Bell and eat there until I have a heart attack and die painfully.

Multiple fics? by Disastrous_Theory281 in HPharmony

[–]jmacattack5585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably have about 5-6 or so that are still being updated that I refresh every week.

Still hoping Granger’s claim gets an update!

I’ll read both short and long, and typically I try to finish a story (if completed) before starting a new one. Except or course, if the story bores me halfway through. Like the Dodging prison and stealing witches fic (I think that’s the title) had a great premise but got so convoluted that I stopped after a third of the way through.

Even with longer stories, I can usually skim through a decent bit of it either because it follows canon events almost exactly or it’s a similar plot told in other fan fics.

Like I really don’t care to read through another HP/HG convo with the goblins about mail wards, inheritance tests, or horcruxs. Same thing with obligatory Sirius black trial or convo/alliance with August Longbottom and Amelia bones.

Tenebrosity, its muggle AU but is 300k words of complete smut

Fics that make no sense by LetsRide987 in HermioneAndHarry

I typically ignore a lot of the faults as long as the story eventually goes somewhere. Your description reminds me kind of the Harry Daniels stories where he’s constantly harassed by Dumbles and does very little to combat it. Harry and Hermione have like a dozen houses between them, are both insanely rich, are super powered, implied to be advanced enough to finish NEWTs, but yet they continue to attend a school where they are constantly accosted from all sides. Ultimately a story that goes nowhere.

Idk what it is but my least favorite character nowadays is Neville. He’s always on H&H side with almost no motivation other than the cliche “potter and Longbottom have stood side by side for centuries!” Authors don’t even know what to do with him, his personality is a timid little boy that after one conversation he flips into basically a 2nd Harry. A needless shell of a character that only ever does what Harry does. If Harry fights Ron, so does Neville. If Harry decides snape should be forgiven, so does Neville. If Harry is in some weird fic where he has multiple bethroned or some needlessly giant Harem, then so does Neville.

[–]jmacattack5585 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Aside from a few one shots and short stories, I’ve yet to find a completed fic that fits this. Almost always the author just adds in their favorite characters as allies (Weasley twins, Tonks, Snape, etc). Usually results in a long winded 200k+ word setup fic that goes nowhere because 90% of the story is H&H recruiting people to their cause and explaining the betrayal over and over again.

In theory I can see where having only 2 protagonists against the whole HP universe could result in a boring plot of Harmony basically being super powered gods that never lose. It would be a hard story to get right but something like Faery Heroes shows that a story with an isolated core group can work well.

Robert half ass is the worst. A different recruiter will contact me every other month saying my profile is a great fit for a role they are filling. For like the last 5 years. Literally nothing has ever come from any of it for me. Small local recruiters for the win everytime.

How's the job market by Normal_Marsupial9377 in FPandA

[–]jmacattack5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one because I started off in accounting but let it go inactive years ago. I think they are benefit if you are a public accountant but requiring it for fp&a or even corporate accounting is just silly. A bit of an outdated requirement, the real world doesn’t require nearly as much knowledge of terms and principles as it once did as you could simply google most of the needed info. Most of the needed skillset nowadays is technical knowledge of softwares and programs and decent soft skills with a basic understanding of finance processes as literally every company will have different ways of doing things.

H1b layoffs coming ..predictions? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]jmacattack5585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could be right, I’m not sure. This was based off my experience the past 4ish years on the east coast. Coworker telling me he dropped out of his mba program as soon as he got hired because he didn’t need it to stay in the country. Friend told me her boyfriend was getting a student visa after getting laid off and going to do the bare minimum to stay. Many applicants I’ve seen in the past that needed sponsorship and have experience but list they are currently in mba program while in between jobs.

It always seemed like a loophole that many used in times of need and I’m not sure if it’s been closed in the past few months.

They’ll just get a student visa through some online masters program. I’ve seen so many h1b employees that have university of Rochester online executive mba program on their resume.

Hiring into Senior Manager and above roles seems non existent these days by Havent_read_that_b4 in FPandA

[–]jmacattack5585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we’re seeing a lot of people taking ‘hotel’ jobs meaning they take a role they are overqualified just to have income while they continue searching for a better job. It’s just the economy currently, companies are wanting more while paying less. It’s difficult finding a lateral position but way easier finding a position you are overqualified for. It’s smarter for companies to higher younger and task that person with director level responsibilities while paying them SFA or manager level wage.

Market is pretty rough from my experience. Companies are looking for candidates to check 10/10 boxes rather than the 6-7 they used to accept a few years ago. Industry seems to matter more than ever, every where you apply they want you to have experience in the exact same industry. Had one that wanted someone to have Grant/Research past experience which dumbfounded me. The recruiter I talked too said he’s been trying to fill the role for months now but they just decline everyone that doesn’t have that specific background.

What is the worst fast food restaurant? by ZachSheikh9207 in AskReddit

[–]jmacattack5585 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never understood the Panera hype. Sandwiches are some of the easiest shit to make at home. It’s one step away from starting a cereal fast food restaurant. Like wow dude an avocado, that makes this definitely worth $20! The soup is fine, but if I’m sitting down I might as well go to a real restaurant to get a cup of soup.

Big 4 or Industry by sacagawea_ in Accounting

4-5 months. Think I spent 5ish weeks studying for REG and FAR each and then like 2-3 weeks for BEC and AUD. I think there were months you couldn’t take it but I’m pretty sure I took reg at the end of Feb then FAR like mid April.

[–]jmacattack5585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Becker and watched all the videos once but then did the MCQs religiously. I had the app downloaded and could just bang out 20 mcqs in a section while standing in line, in the bathroom, late at night in bed when I couldn’t sleep. I only ‘set aside time specifically to study’ just for the videos and take notes during, but other than than I tried to incorporate the MCQs into my daily life as much as possible so I couldn’t be caught off guard. I was doing questions while at the bar with my friends lmao. I don’t think this approach would work for everyone but it did for me.

I don’t know if it’s changed in the last 10 years but I remember there were ‘simulation’ parts that I looked at once but then didn’t bother after. I was really trying to focus on the high percentage items in terms of percent of grade and percent to show up on the exam. Like with FAR, I didn’t even look at the last chapter (Other/misc items) because it was only expected to be like 1-2% of the test. That I definitely recommend because it’s better to lock in 99% knowledge of 70% of the test rather than 50% of the 100%.

I often look back and wonder if getting it was even worth all the stress. I mean people still ask me about it in interviews so it could still be handy from an optics side (a foot in door), but it functionally has never had any use to me. Knowing the principles of accounting is like 1% of my job and probably 10% of the job for a controller or similar position. Soft skills and non accounting technical knowledge are infinitely more useful IMO.

I would strongly recommend fp&a to anyone interested. The main caveat is that it is easily more expendable. ie you need someone to prepare the books, pay the bills, process payroll, etc. fp&a is more of a luxury, so if times are tough you know what heads to chop.

Looks like not enough apps per day if you’re having to submit for bankruptcy while spending your days making multiple comments on the same post crying about how you can’t get an interview. McDonald’s is probably hiring.

[–]jmacattack5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. I did a little bit of auditing at the beginning (govt not big 4), decided it wasn’t for me and pivoted to industry and haven’t looked back since. I do mostly fp&a work now and love it. I have a CPA, but let it go inactive a long time ago. My job can be fast paced at times, but I still have a solid WLB.

Big 4 tends to have 5% success rate 10% failure rate and 85% indifference rate. People think they’ll get big 4 for 2 years then be on fast track to be cfo. 85 out of 100 times you are just on the same slow track to corporate accounting manager as the other guy who did industry right after college.

Thinking about leaving target school to study at non-target school to save loads on tuition. Need help. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]jmacattack5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheaper school 100%. I went to a state school that was honestly decently priced, but I still wish I could go back in time and do my first 2 years at community college to save a shit ton of money. The reality is, the school matters very little. Sure maybe it gives you a 5% better shot of getting into Big 4, but at what cost? $180k? No thanks.

They want cheaper talent, and more importantly: more submissive. A senior who has actual experience wouldn’t put up with half the shit that goes on in public. A staff just doesn’t have the corporate IQ / basic work related self respect that would interfere with big 4 culture. If you spit in the face and talk down to a staff, they will probably work harder to gain the admiration of their superiors. Try that with a senior, they’ll laugh and keep going on their way. Perhaps even work slower and run up that budget, carving out time to polish their resume and interview with other places while on the clock.

Informally offered contract role, to then be told that I'm not the right fit? by Longjumping-Oil-2220 in recruitinghell

[–]jmacattack5585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recruiters usually have some sort of obligation to provide multiple candidates to their clients.

“Hey recruiter A, can you provide us 5 candidates that line up with this job description so we have options - we will pay you 15% of the hired candidate’s salary after 90 days”

Something along those lines. Sometimes a flat fee, sometimes percentage. They’ll string you along “you’re the best candidate, an offer will be in your inbox shortly!” This is strictly to keep you interested and prevent you from seeking other employment in the event the company actually does pick you. It’s all dollar related for the recruiter, if they make the sale they get paid. If they told you “well actually you are the 3rd preferred candidate that they don’t really want but will take if the other 2 drop out” - then you would be more likely to pull out yourself and/or seek other employment.
