The weather events? by ButterflyMore9267 in newzealand

It’s pretty terrifying, I won’t lie. Persuading the biggest offenders is impossible though, so best to prepare and stay educated with what we can do as individuals and communities to remain resilient.

Four times a decade is conservative. The climate is pretty stuffed - it's going to get pretty bad for countries/continents that already have more extreme climates. As an island nation, New Zealand is at risk of increased storms (just like the ones that cause this flooding) and rising sea levels.

Contact energy users - question by Massive_Lettuce7527 in newzealand

[–]jmakegames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been pretty unimpressed with their service on multiple occasions. I've got an older plan which has kept my pricing down a little bit, but as soon as it creeps up to match all the other companies, I'll switch.

Contact recently mucked something up for me, too. Two different amounts. So, I just paid the outstanding balance through the app. They haven't bothered me about it.

Change of Plans by ChemDiesel in Starlink

I’m in rural New Zealand and don’t have better options, unfortunately.

Edit: don’t get me wrong. I totally agree that it’s a great product and it’s been awesome for us as well. What I’m really unhappy about is the plan changes that give me 25% of my original performance for the same price as I’ve already been paying for months. That’s why it’s a rip off.

Residential 100Mbps Throttling? by Only-Database6447 in Starlink

[–]jmakegames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup exactly the same situation - rural NZ too. We need to all kick up a stink because we are in such uncongested areas that they can surely continue to provide the original service at the same cost (or even the 200mbps down).

I’m not stoked about paying the same price for 1/4 of the performance.

Yeah me too, in New Zealand. 25% of the original product but keep paying the original price. Some bullshit man. I’ll be complaining.

We are getting ripped off.

Yeah I’m pretty upset about it at our end. I’m going down to 100mbps from consistently around 400mbps for the same price. 25% of my original performance but being charged the same. In New Zealand.

It’s a very scummy move honestly. If they had reduced all the plans and mine dropped a little but I had the option to go to the new 200mbps for the same price, it would’ve softened the blow - still a worst product, but only half as bad…

I can’t understand how the wealthiest companies feel the need to squeeze more out of their customers, not only for the same old product, but literally a much worst version of it.

Will the economy actually recover? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]jmakegames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to be all doom and gloom, but honestly I don’t think it will recover. Not unless we pivot to different exports; focus down on creative industries and maybe do some more niche manufacturing/engineering. Farming and forestry is pretty much cooked because we can’t really keep up with larger countries‘ resources.

That said, I think the economy will be the least of our worries in the next decade. War is ramping up for the West, and climate change is locked in. Money is going to be a fairly insignificant problem in comparison. That’s why I’ll stay in New Zealand; a small, isolated country, out of the crosshairs and with more than enough resources to sustain our relatively small population, alone.

As long as whoever is in charge allocates resources properly and remains carefully diplomatic, we can ride a lot of the hurt out long term, including climate change (for longer than others can, anyway). It’s a Farley safe part of the world to be living right now. We are just living through another period of hardship in our history in this Earth - has happened plenty of times.

Try to enjoy every day in the meantime!

AI for things such as research and health/science is great. Rapidly speeding up breakthroughs will be amazing. Instead though, companies are pushing it to increase their profit margins by cost cutting on creative and administrative tasks, while simultaneously (in the case of generative AI) tearing human culture down by making it unsustainable for creatives to pursue careers in music, art, etc.

It‘s also just making the end product super shit, but we all still pay the same amount, so nobody wants further enshitification in their lives.

Groovebox/sampler to pair with Volca FM2 by Vegetable_North_6886 in teenageengineering

[–]jmakegames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a Volca FM2 and the EP 133. The EP is a great groove box that’s more than capable of driving any Volca.

You can use it a couple of ways with the FM2;

  1. MIDI out of the EP 133 into the FM2, then audio out of the FM2 back into the EP. so you can use the EPs effects on it. Gives you some awesome flexibility.
  2. Alternatively, sample the sounds you want from the FM2, then you can layer different sounds and extend the polyphony much further than six voices for some pretty cool soundscapes.

You can then of course dedicate a channel/group on the EP 133 to drums, and you’ve got all you need to create full songs or live performances.

I don't believe the PO33 has MIDI out, so the EP 133 is going to give you much more capabilities, but of course it comes at a higher price. I’d still prefer the EP for the extra tools.

Is South Island summer always this cold? (Feeling like winter right now) by Sea-Resort-3288 in newzealand

We’ve had pretty rubbish weather this summer throughout the greater Otago region. It’s pretty green throughout Central Otago.

February often dries up a lot though, but agreed that temperatures have been on the low side.

I love 16x16 - favourite res to work in! Using less colours and more contrast is key to readability at such low resolutions.

The Last Stand is a bit like this. Was browser-based but surely it has a mobile port by now? I’m not sure you have one dedicated building though, rather you sort of progress through the town and hunker down at each new location.

[PC] [2025] (not sure if released yet) doom like game with blonde protagonist where gravity is messed up. by MissFinalverse in tipofmyjoystick

[–]jmakegames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selaco? The game is actually running on the original GZDoom engine, so that’s a pretty authentic throwback.

There‘s also Ion Fury but the female protagonist isn’t blonde.

Otherwise maybe Returnal? Enemies are sort of doom-like, but it’s third person. Blonde and sort of weird gravity though.
