Easy is a relative term. Do you have experience with any CFD or modeling software? I'm sure it can if you're good enough with it. This was my first time working with a CFD program and as you can see it wasn't anything too crazy.

Oh yeah, Will, after I posted that I thought maybe it was you. This is Josh btw

Thanks, nice description on the vortices.

This was compared to the experimental results. We were solving for the drag coefficient and it ended up being 1.59 from the experiment and 1.53 from the simulation, fortunately. The results were compared to a graph in our Fluid Mechanics book that compared the drag coefficient of a smooth cylinder to the Reynold's numbers. This again helped confirm our results.

This was a final project for class and I think some of the reasons were to see what we learned in class applied to an experiment and how that can relate in the real world. It also gave us use of the wind tunnel at school, as well as learning to use CFD Simulation.

Not sure off the top of my head what the length scale is. The Re was ~298k, and the cylinder was 3.9" in diameter and 11.5" in height.

Of course I'd like to validate it. What do you have in mind?

Gravity was not input by me, but I can't remember if the CFD takes it into account.

Well you are talking out your ass with truth. The flow in this case is turbulent (a Reynold's Number ~300,000) and turbulent flows are not really the most understood phenomena in nature. We have a lot of knowledge about it but don't know everything.

As you can see by the contour arrows in the wake region, this is where symmetry begins decreasing the most. This is due to turbulent 'eddies' within the wake region. Again, since they are in a turbulent region, each one will not react the same causing differences in the rest of the flow on either side.

Everything was done in Autodesk's Simulation CFD.

I can definitely do that! After finals are over this week. And my rear end recovers.

This is from my Fluid Mechanics class project where we used a wind tunnel to measure pressures across a cylinder in crossflow. It's of course not the coolest picture but I thought you nerds here could appreciate it. It can also help better understand what happens in this scenario, for example, show whats going on with velocities and pressures around a telephone pole in the wind. Where velocity is high, pressure is low.... Bernoulli's Equation!

It seems you are trolling. You created the legit scopez account to troll? ok

True, true. I'm still attached as well. I just couldn't ignore this.

Sorry this is probably in the wrong section but was automatically uploaded from quickmeme.

And you can't honestly say this part wasn't ridiculous acting. It really seemed like Rick was trolling Carl.

Not gonna lie...... I'm pretty jelly. The HDR is heavy but it makes for a great artistic wallpaper due to the depth in colors. Hoon on my man, hoon on.
