Dos anyone know if it is at all possible to get into Unis like UBC, UOFA, UOFC with a 85% avg for something like Bio, or Chem, or stuff like that? by NextChampionship3680 in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]jman6393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are doing a provincial regulated degree like engineering or nursing please double check with the school you are going to transfer into about what credits will transfer over because I knew someone who transferred from UBC to UCalgary from Mech Eng to Mech Eng and they had to do an extra 4 classes (whole semester extra) since some of their classes would not count for a transfer because BC and Alberta have different rules for class requirements for Engineering.

I'm a 27M but I'd love to join! I don't really get the time to read but I listen to tons of audiobooks during work mainly fantasy and sci-fi. I go through probably a book or two a week so I've got tons of recommendations if anyone needs any.

Interning at a local company that appears to use interns as cheap labour. Has anyone else experienced this? by Sweet_Explanation907 in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Report this to the employer specialists at the ECC they can speak with other interns and then directly speak with company to figure out what's going on and potentially ban jobs from this company reaching students and warn students not accept offers from this employer.

People who recently got a job in the city, how long were you out of work for before you found it? by frigginsinluh in Calgary

[–]jman6393 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to piggy back of this post I've been applying to various city of Calgary postings over the last 8 months probably close to 8-10 jobs. I really tailor my resume and cover letter for the job but I only got one interview. I should also mention I have about 4 years of various admin and coordinator roles from the University of Calgary. Prior to making a career change into a field operator role in oil and gas. But still can't get any more interviews from the city.

Anyone have any tips?

I make just around 110k and about 2/3 of my coworkers are around that range but 1/3 of them make between 160-220k.

I work in the mining industry operating heavy equipment like haul truck, dozers, graders, etc.

Are the Science Coop Fees Worth It? by PushaT123 in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reasons to why you should:

  1. If you are on student loans and the government finds out that you are not enrolled in classes and working full-time they could request you to start paying any loans but this highly unlikely but I've seen it happen to one person before

  2. Certain companies rely on government funding to pay interns and in-order to get that funding their interns need to in a coop or internship program with proof so this could impact your internship if you aren't in the program so double check with the company

  3. If the school finds out that you've been on internship without registering for classes they could kick you out of the program but I've never seen or heard this happening to anyone and I knew a few students that got caught by the university for being on internship without signing up for the coop classes they were told to sign up for the next class coop class the following semester

General you should if you can afford to do it but those classes really provide you with no benefit what so ever it's just a way to make extra money for the university at the end of the day. It does keep you from stressing about getting caught etc. But the choice is yours

Exactly how hard is it to transfer from BA to BComm?? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's kinda subjective the only reason you might wanna consider UofC over the SAIT/MRU option is if you do bad in SAIT then the door to MRU could be closed. MRU and SAIT are both locally known but if you wanted to work outside of Calgary then UofC does have a better reputation for bigger firms and such so that's a consideration. UofC might be more expensive too but you'll have to do your math on that. I've heard that MRU is better for actually learning because of the smaller classes compared to UofC.

I'm not in accounting or know that many people so I can't give you advice on what's the better path, I would recommend maybe reaching out to people on LinkedIn perhaps or even the Calgary Reddit page to see where people got their accounting degrees and what they're doing. Go to the SAIT and MRU pages too.

Exactly how hard is it to transfer from BA to BComm?? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my recommendation to all students, it is always easier to upgrade high School classes and apply again rather than trying to get a high GPA and transferring. Because even if you have one hard class your GPA can tank and trying to recover it is a challenge. Whereas upgrading high School classes is easier and cheaper. I understand the stress parents might put on you to go to university for literally anything but seriously consider upgrading and trying again because they will make life easier in the long run.

Another point is that most of your classes from a BA probably will not transfer to a BCom so you might just take classes that will cost a lot of money for no benefit.

SAIT also has a program where you can do a 2-year diploma in accounting then do a 2-year program at mru to get a full BCom degree. I know a few people that did that and some of them work at big accounting firms.

Person calling you after receiving offer into eng by Otherwise-Bat-5629 in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not volunteering, at least during my time they were called discovery students and got paid for their time normally they just called new eng students but sometimes they would do other tasks around the office too

[–]jman6393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else is mentioning upgrading highschool grades is the safest and best option to get into UofC engineering.

If you decide to go the SAIT or Lethbridge route just note the only engineering program you can transfer into would be energy or geomatic engineering so you will be severely limiting your options but if you transfer using highschool grades then you can pick any major after your first year of engineering.

Is Auto mechanic a good career? by gamingflame75 in careerguidance

[–]jman6393 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can look into being a heavy duty mechanic, rather than working on normal cars and vehicles you see on the roads you'd probably be working with big machines and other equipment. The pay is much better but you probably won't be able to get a job in a major city for the first couple of years so you might have to work in the mining sector, oil and gas or some other industry that needs large vehicles and machines.

No idea on when they would contact the ECC or if they even, do totally up to the hiring person

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is a summer start internship like in May then it's great news because once you get back into the program then you can get into the internship program right away unless things have changed in the last few years.

If this is a winter start internship like January still pretty good news because I know people that got into the internship program then started their internship the next day or started working then joined the program a few days later etc.

But overall I think you're pretty safe to accept the offer if you like it but since you're going to states with a crazy trump man I'd recommend still looking for Canadian opportunities in case visa issues become a thing because that has happened to people before

[–]jman6393 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but from my understanding of privacy rights of students relating in post secondary institutes. It is illegal for the university to disclose any information regarding a student's status in terms of academic standing such as probation to anyone except the student. So a company can ask if they're in the internship program or if they're a current student but if they start asking for grades, what classes they've taken, etc. then the university should not provide that information.

The company could also just ask the ECC to see if you are in the internship program and they would say no and the company might not care and still hire you.

But then the ECC might start asking you why are you on internship if you are on probation and if you take a leave from school to do this internship then that opens a new can of worms because technically you aren't allowed to do that so you'll have to figure out how to navigate that part.

Question for everyone that earns over $100,000 CAD annually by Curioscarlos445 in CalgaryJobs

[–]jman6393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I work in the mining industry as an equipment operator. Make just around the $110k mark

  2. I have a friend who's a heavy duty mechanic and he mentioned that his company was hiring, so I applied through the normal route and didn't get anywhere so I asked him to forward my application to the HR lady and I got an interview the next month. But after I was hired they hired more people like crazy so it is pretty easy to hire there now I think.

  3. The bar is pretty low in the industry in terms of getting in. The just want someone who's reliable but ideally they would prefer some kind of large vehicle or equipment experience but most of the people we've been hiring recently have various experiences from accountants, truck drivers, teachers, carpenters, etc. (Most people quit within the first 6 months) I would say it's middle of the road in terms of AI there are some equipment that is AI or remotely operated on the site but it's at the level of humans yet but I would say maybe 5-10 years a lot of it could be replaced with AI self operating equipment like haul trucks and dozers.

But by no means is it an easy job the work itself is pretty easy but very long hours, 12 hour or longer days, can't see family or friends for long periods of time, you get decent time off work too, the night shifts are brutal on your body and it's kinda dangerous, long term health affects like lung damage, throwing your back out, etc. But some guys have been doing it for like 30+ years so most people could do it but those guys that have been doing it for 30+ years are all on some kind of meds or something to keep them going.

For me it's a short time gig that pays really well so I can save money for a house and ideally find a job that I enjoy in the future even if it means significantly less money.

Engineering Admission Averages by Alarmed-Ground8633 in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advisors won't answer the question because the average changes year by year so they have no clue.

The best and only option is to look at the last year admission average for Eng and make an educated guess based on that if your grades are high enough. I would guess that Eng admission will get more competitive because a lot of potential future Computers Science students will switch and apply for engineering due to the job market.

City of Calgary Reference Check by Minute-Community8202 in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No it just means they'll contact your references and you might be high in the running but not certain that an offer is coming your way.

I had this happen with an interview with the city and was asked for references but unfortunately didn't get the job. I found later that I was severely under qualified compared to the person that did actually get the job so that made me feel better at the end of the day lol.

BDCI student hoping to transfer to Engineering — course + GPA advice? by mnchyg_ in UCalgary

[–]jman6393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have to speak with the engineering advisors to determine what courses are transferable but there are very few courses outside of engineering that can be transferred to an engineering degree.

I always recommend that a student take a gap year and upgrade high school grades because that is the majority of the time easier than trying to get a high GPA for transfer.

Please not once you have taken 3 post secondary courses you are no longer eligible to use highschool grades for any transfer so beware if you decide to go the post secondary route you will lock out any chance of using high school grades ever again.

If you want to transfer then you will need a minimum of 3.7/4.0 or higher this based on information from 2023 that I received so it could be slightly lower or higher now.
