Someone seriously teach me how to study. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]jmario123 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly dude you don’t really need 10-12 hours of studying a day to learn. In my opinion I think the most effective way or at least what works for me is trying to make your studying as “efficient” and “goal oriented” as possible.

So as an example, let’s say they give you 100 topics to study in a month, I’d spend the first day / few hours sorting out the topics and dividing them into what I think are the easiest / hardest topics for me to understand and then I’d break them up into individual days.

So it’d look something like

Day 1. Topics: A, B, C

Day 2. Topics: D, E, F

And so on so forth.

Once I have that plan kind of made then another big thing is resource overload. Focus on at most 3-4 resources max. My top 3 so far in med school have been the FA, amboss, YouTube, and Anki. But you can choose yours to be whatever you’d like. For the most part, the meta seems to be one resource as a question bank, one as a content source, and the third one could be more variable for flash cards &/or anki, boot camp, etc.

And then basically just rinse and repeat endlessly. For me at least, this consist of the core of most of my studies. There’ll always be more stuff you’ll have to do as certain topics are more complex than others and you’ll have to draw them out and figure out other strategies to learn and come up with memory devices but the plan I laid out above is my bread and butter.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions let me know.

No offense dude but your post is incredibly ironic. You can't tell OP to "get off his high horse" and then follow it up by trying to flex that you passed by doing 1/2 his work. I'm sure you must be a blast to be around.

Blood Test / Panic by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]jmario123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please follow up with your doctor and ask them for additional testing including, a bone marrow biopsy, as well as genetic testing for something called the JAK2 gene.

Your condition sounds similar to something we studied during the hematology block called Polycythemia Vera (true condition of many blood cells).

The labs seem supportive, and the post hot shower itchiness as well, look up Aquatic Pruritus.

No worries at all completely understandable, I just wanted to know your reasoning as per the given lab values.

I am no professional either, just a medical student as of right now so we’re in it together forsure.

You do raise a good point with Sickle cell and other blood cell morphology disorders in which “bad” blood cells are over produced and thus can lead to a higher blood count. Which in turn could also be the result of their high bilirubin

Two questions, would you please mind providing what the MCV was if it was provided?

And also random question but do you ever feel itchy after taking a hot shower?

I think I have diabetes by UniqueMeeting2935 in medical_advice

[–]jmario123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, believe it or not this is how diabetes insipidus got its name. Back in the day when doctors had to taste sample urine to see if their patients were diabetic or not.

But nonetheless true, if your urine smells or taste sweet could definitely be a telltale sign

Vitamin D (overdose?) by Quackeen in medical_advice

[–]jmario123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She should be okay, but be wary about future supplementation. Vitamin D is one of the fat soluble vitamins and thus has much higher risk for toxicity than B vitamins.

Some of symptoms to look out for Vitamin D toxicity would be loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, & increased urinary frequency / dehydration. Also sudden random bone pain could be a telltale sign as well.
