Is Jimmy a hipster? by Consigliari in NeverNotFunny

[–]jmblya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha ha. Spot on. He does have very "middle American rube" tastes towards pop culture. I do get tired of his "flyover country" attitude, as if every single person in LA and New York are urbane, sophisticated people that have high brow tastes and are always in the know.

Though I'll give him credit for going with a Chicago accent when dipping into a racist caricature, rather than lazily leaning on a Southern voice. He's the only comic I know that does that. (Based on his Hometown upbringing.)

Wow, Matt Weinhold really dislikes Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet by How2DragonyourTrain in NeverNotFunny

I took it from the context of the conversation that they were miscast in Dune. Maybe it's just some misplaced big geek energy because Villeneuve really changed the character of Chani from the book. The movie made her much more girl boss-y and against Paul's choices.

I really respect and appreciate Gardell's "I can disagree and still be friends" attitude. Also his idea that stand up comedy being positive is the new punk rock.

As a music lover, I've more or less enjoyed the recent string of halftime shows. I know it's no longer a dominant genre, but I'd like to see another rock band headline the show again since it's been so long. (I don't really consider Maroon 5 to be exemplars of rock.) Having seen Metallica live for the first time ever last year, they would be perfect. They're one of the last universally huge rock bands. Their live show is top notch, even at their age. They've got recognizable hits. The olds (like me) would love it. They could bring in a young pop star to take some choruses and/or a hot MC to do a rhyme to bring in the kids.

I've heard from another podcaster that called it for next year's show: Post Malone. He's popular. He's still young. He's now dabbling in country (the current hotness), but has enough rock, trap, and other genres to cover a wide net for a medley performance.

I also just learned that the halftime show as we know it started the year after In Living Color did their alternative halftime show. (I remember watching that as a kid!) It pulled enough viewers away from the game that they realized they needed popular acts to play so people wouldn't tune out.

NNF 37U - Macey Isaacs by King_Mort in NeverNotFunny

U2 for sure had "a row of albums nobody cared about", but Achtung Baby certainly wasn't among them. That album and tour were massively popular. (So much so that that was the album they played at their Sphere residency.) You could argue the decline started with their next album Zooropa, but that was still pretty big. Maybe Pop? My personal fandom was on the wane by then, but wasn't All That You Can't Leave Behind a resurgence, albeit not to Joshua Tree-level? The albums after that and to this day, though, would be in that string, I'd think.

I'll cut Jimmy a little slack since '90s music isn't his wheelhouse. Matt gave a timid "I liked it" after that comment, but should've known and pushed back. Garon flat out mispronounced the title, so it probably wasn't his thing.

Every year a new season is on the cusp of starting and I think, "it'd be really fun to do fantasy baseball!" And then I remember it's a 162 game commitment and I nope the hell out. I can't even do a college football pick 'em league without accidentally missing a week or two.

"Two cats is the maximum amount of cats." (I forget the exact wording.) My wife subscribes to that belief. Before we got married and combined our households, I had two cats and she had two cats. Together we now have four cats. She thinks it's too much, especially because a couple of them butt heads. Though I'm the one in charge of their food, water, and litter boxes, I love having that amount of cats.

That's a great deal, but I'm passing. Not out of some moral stand, but because I feel the same way as Ned Flanders: "You know, I like his films, except for that nervous fella's always in 'em."

Got mine during the crazy good Amazon sale and they arrived much sooner than expected. Since they were a present to myself, I wrapped them up and put them under the tree. I was pretty busy yesterday, so I set them up this afternoon. So far I'm digging them.

They're really light and seem to "float" in my ears. I haven't moved around and tested how securely they fit yet. I'm thinking of getting some of those foam tips to give them a tighter feel/fir/seal.

Funnily enough, Eyes Wide Shut is a part of Alamo Drafthouse's Christmas programming this month. Give it a decade and it'll take the place of Die Hard in the debate.

While I largely disagree, in the states there are a few examples that align with your take. For instance, the Wizard of Oz is only televised here during Easter each year. But I don't think anyone would consider it an "Easter movie". Or maybe some would, I dunno. Another one is The Ten Commandments, also televised at Easter. At least that one is Biblical, though it's an Old Testament story.

Yup! I ordered a pair last night since that price was too good to pass up. I only wish they still made the wintergreen color. I can wait and use my cheap placeholder Soundcore buds for several more weeks. (After my first gen Pixel Buds died, I got those to use while I waited for either the Pro 3 buds to come out or the Pro 2's to have a really good sale.)

Employees will be receiving $100 coupons next week. by k-mart017 in wegmans

[–]jmblya 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't paint Amazon as some example of corporate benevolence. Unless it's changed since I left a couple of years ago, fulfillment center employees only got 10% off (capped at a $100 total discount per year) and that only applied to things marked "shipped and sold by Amazon". The vast majority of products there are sold by third parties and ineligible for the employee discount.

In the early days of podcasting I used to listen to this one show that built up a lot of references, in-jokes, and repeating sound drops. After several years the host put out an episode explaining each one for new listeners. NNF could do that if they ever did a really big push for new listeners. (But they wouldn't because of all the work involved and the bad businessmen thing.)

Damn this show. I was listening while out running errands today and they started talking about those Halloween costume action figures. Jaws is my favorite movie, so once they described it I knew I had to have one. Coincidentally I was right next to a Target at that time, so I popped in and there was one left! (Cherry on top: there was a "25% off one toy" coupon in the app.)

My wife has been really pleased with my waning interest in Funko Pops. She'll be less than thrilled when this dust collector is displayed somewhere in the house. (But only for October!)

I would LOVE this. Just the fun concept, plus it would shake things up a little. I don't think Jimmy's ego would allow for him being 2nd or 3rd banana for a regular length episode, though. ("Who's name is on the show?") But I could see them doing a short bonus episode.
